The Philippines vs. Vietnam: Comparing Infrastructure Development

  • Vietnam and the Philippines are in a race to elevate their infrastructure, directly impacting the quality of life and internet accessibility for their citizens. While the Philippines has unveiled 197 new projects under the Marcos administration, aiming to revamp transport, utilities, and sanitation, Vietnam isn't far behind, with plans to enhance its vast transport network and introduce nine new railway routes by 2030.
    🚆 Transport Insights:
    - The Philippines shines with its ambitious North-South Commuter Railway projects and the forthcoming Metro Manila Subway, promising to transform the daily commute.
    - Vietnam, despite its outdated rail system, is on the brink of a railway revolution. Its extensive plans include a significant Hanoi to HCMC route.
    - Air travel in both nations is set for a major overhaul, with the Philippines and Vietnam expanding their airport capacities to accommodate the passenger surge.
    🌍 Digital Transformation:
    - The Philippines gears up for a digital revolution, with investments soaring in data hosting and processing, driven by the e-commerce boom.
    - Vietnam boasts one of the most affordable internet services globally, laying a solid foundation for widespread digital access and utility.
    💡 Energy and Sustainability:
    - Vietnam achieves a milestone with universal electricity access, majorly through hydropower, while the Philippines leans on geothermal sources but heavily relies on coal for electricity production.
    💧 Water and Sanitation Challenges:
    - Both countries face significant challenges in providing safe water and sanitation, with the Philippines struggling to ensure access for over half of its households and Vietnam working to eliminate disparities between urban and rural areas.
    - Who takes the lead in this infrastructure showdown? Vietnam's detailed planning and existing networks give it an edge, but the Philippines' rapid development and investment in digital infrastructure signal a competitive race.

I am Filipino and I've been to Vietnam too ( I loveeeeeeeee the country). Though it is true that Vietnam is developing rapidly we also need to understand that the Philippines is made up of Islands, Interconnectivity and logistics alone is tough enough to consider. If you look at a grander scale the frame work is closer to Indonesia than Vietnam. Our key cities are rapidly developing as well. There is Cebu, Davao, Iloilo and CDO but I truly believe there is more that we can do. Vietnam's North to South development strategy is successful for the absence of the archipelagic hurdle. It may seem competitive at a glance, but Vietnam rapidly developing is a good model for the Philippines to re-examine and re-evaluate it's projects and platforms for improvement.

As a Vietnamese who was born in 198x, I remember during 1990s whenever somebody talking about neighbor countries like Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Phillippines, I imagined that they are rich countries not like us the poor countries and I hope that my country will develop fast and will be rich like them. In early 2000s when I started go to work, I met some Thai, Pilipinos, Indonesian, Malaysian & Singaporean when they visit Vietnam for business & travelling, I found that only Singapore & Malaysia are long way ahead of us, the other countries in the region not so far away from us and we can catch up with them in 2-3 decades. I also talked with some Korean business man during that time and they said Vietnam as a country is much better than Korea because Vietnam as a whole not like Korea seperated into North & South. They also said that Vietnam will soon catch up & surpass PH. Now looking back and I realized that what the Korean business man talked to me becomes real now. if you compare Vietnam vs PH during 1990s no one would believe that we are now richer than PH in-term of GDP per capital ... Any way, I hope every countries in Asean develop the economy and lift all citizen out of poverty and make the region properous like EU.

For some reason, when Vietnam has its own car brand, they are not satisfied and always try to downplay it, hoping it will go bankrupt. Why don't we unite and support each other to develop together to escape third world countries? Cooperation is always better than confrontation.

Vietnam has laid their foundation of economic strategies across numerous sectors (electronics, technology, agriculture) while the Philippines has been a service-based economy (outsourcing centers and remittance from workers overseas) for decades. Both economically and politically, the Philippines has been reliant on the US since the 40s - 50s and is highly subject to the turbulences happening in the US. Meanwhile, the US sanctions on Vietnam after the Vietnam war crippled the economy with widespread famine across country in the 80s. Nowadays, Vietnam does not rely on a few trading partners, it has sought and joined exclusive trading agreements with many other nations and regions, regardless of geopolitical standing.

Japan has never been fully invaded or colonized by any foreign power, unlike the Philippines who was under the wings of Spain for more than 300 years and the US for almost 50. On tope of that, Japan also conquered them for quite some time. Its people's ways, cultures and traditions are divided because of this, and they also have conflicting muslim parties in Mindanao. I'm Filipino and this is clear as a day, Vietnam will surpass Philippines sooner than later. Their approach is more holistic and decentralized so it's not just one region that is developing. Instead, development is spread out across the whole country making it sure that whatever increase in income, can be felt by the whole nation. With Philippines, on the other hand, our development is so centralized in the main region of Metro Manila that other regions are basically left to fend for themselves. Although some regions like cebu, davao, iloilo, etc. are catching up, it still took a ton of years to do so and their current level of development isn't still in par with the ones in metro manila. You will feel and see the income disparity so much that it's baffling.
High hopes tho, on a positive note. Both governments are very aggressive in trying to address what they need to address.

poorly and under researched i think. FYI there are 8 railway projects that are already under construction. There 2 new international airports namely New Manila and Sangley Point that are also under construction, which have a total capacity of 300M combined. You guys should do your research more in-depth.

@@jeddee3820i don’t care about Vietnam infrastracture. It is not competition after all. I am only saying that the report is under researched and I am stating some facts. If they will have better infrastracture, so we’ll be happy for them. But as for me, I have high hopes for the Philippines. Sana ganun din ang ibang mga Pilipino.
