      @M yes, soccer is the most powerful sport on Earth, but in North America it isn't even a major sport. The MLS has done well, but it doesn't constitute as North America's 5th major sport. Not sure what soccer has to do with the 1982 World Series.

    I went to games 3 and 4 here in Milwaukee. Game 4 was a day game. Remember them in the WS? My dad applied for and got 4 bleacher seats in a sort of lottery. I was 20 then. I can't believe it's been almost 38 years. That bottom of the 7th in game 4 was the loudest I've ever heard County Stadium, and I went to many games there.

    Im a born and raised diehard Astros fan but something about the Cardinals of '82 and '85 I loved. It was all the players collectively as one team. I remember all those guys. As well as Whitey. I was 11 years old in 1982, and this was my first full season of watching baseball. I try to compare MLB of the past with the present to realize that modern-day ball is nowhere near as good as the old days. There was a different and harder mentality in the players back then. • @theaterdreamer
    @theaterdreamer 4 роки тому +4

    It came down to team health. I’m sure the Cardinals had some injury issues, too, but the last two American League Cy Young Award winners, both on the Brewers, were virtually non factors because of injury. Rollie Fingers (the 1981 American League MVP and Cy Young Award winner) didn’t play in the series after saving 29 games for the Brewers during the regular season. He missed the entire 1983 season, too. And Pete Vukovich clearly wasn’t himself. He started two games in the Series, but gave up 7 earned runs in 14 innings, pitching while in great pain. It was discovered in the off-season that he’d torn his rotator cuff. He made three starts at the very end of the 1983 season, then missed all of 1984 with injury.
    Had the Brewers had Fingers, and a healthy Pete Vukovich, they win the Series.

  • @troyschartiger8912

    1982 was the first and last American League pennant for the Milwaukee Brewers and because of expansion teams, division realignment, and expanded round of playoffs, the Milwaukee Brewers moved to from the American League Central Division to the National League Central Division after the 1997 MLB Season.

    Very rarely does a single trade put you over the top.
    But the addition of Rollie, Simba, and Vuk took the Brewers from hard hitting up and comers
    to the team to beat in the A.L East.

    • @darioseventi4091
      @darioseventi4091 5 років тому

      Your right. But here we need to remember that not only did this trade help Milwaukee get to the WS, it also got St.Louis to the big show as well. Can anyone tell me if in the history of the game there has been another offseason trade between two teams that ended up in the WS?

    • @wheelinthesky300
      @wheelinthesky300 4 роки тому

      @@darioseventi4091 For the Cardinals, the trade was indirectly helpful, in that the sequence allowed them to move an unhappy Gary Templeton yet replace him with an even better defender in Ozzie.
      However, they should have gotten more in exchange for the talent they gave up.
      Granted the Cards had no spots
      for Simba and Rollie,
      and they were giving up on project Vuk.
      The subtractions didn't hurt the Cards,
      but the additions made the Brewers A.L. Champs.

    Paul Molitor in game one became the first player in World Series history to collect five hits in one game. And Robin Yount collected four hits. He would become the first player with a pair of four hit games in a World Series.
    Nine hits the two Hall of Famers had together in that first meeting. I’ll never forgive Sal Bando for calling Molitor a “DH only”, and his allowing Molitor to leave. Molly should have retired as a Brewer, and his 3,000th hit should have come in a Brewers uniform.

    The final games for Baltimore in 1982 were at home facing the Brewers, where to Orioles needed to sweep the final series against them. My mom had bought me a ticket for that game months before because she knew it was Earl Weaver's last game before his retirement. The last game was lost by Baltimore and the Brewers kept going. The O's fans stayed, and said good bye to Weaver, when he finally came out to the field. It was an incredible game. Before the game started I saw Bob Uecker being talked to and Baltimore fans where yelling "GET OUT OF HERE UECKER ! He would turn at that direction to wave and smile. That was great !

      Kerry Rucks: Yeah, in the 82 series, there were a few balls that were hit to centerfield that Robin likely would have gotten to but Gorman could not. Harvey should have pulled Gorman in the 7th game and put in Marshall Edwards as he did in game 5 of the ALCS. Edwards made the game winning play in the 9th inning. Gorman would not have made that play had he been in there at the time.

    3. The Brewers manager out chewed Whitey- a feat possibly harder than the WS title.

    Boy, was Dick Enberg a pro's pro, obviously a HOFer. His narration is filled with energy, ups and downs depending on the highlight moment, a sense of drama. Compare this WS highlight reel with others narrated by the likes of Curt Gowdy, especially, even Vin Scully. Gowdy was just so clinical, like "mail me the paycheck." Maybe it's that this reel piped-in stadium music/noise plus in-tight dialogues after close plays, etc.

My depression over the result of that series is like COVID-19, it won't go away!! Willie McGee really beat us up badly in game 3 of the series. Then 16 years later in 1998 after the Brewers joined the national league, McGee was back with the Cardinals, and was beating up on us again during a season game at county stadium. The Brewer fans were booing every time McGee stepped up to the plate. And the announcers said "These Brewer fans have LONG memories!!"
