Sorry for the video flickering, tech issues we weren't able to figure out in time. I hope you'll appreciate the video & the song anyways. Merry Christmas to all you who celebrate it. :)
Lee Cox Thanks! It's not flawless, but I try. Patrick, my native German friend in this video, is a big help. I speak a little bit of German and have a decent ear for pronunciation, having lived in various countries over the years. :)
This remains one of the best videos of its kind - it makes learning the parts very enjoyable and easy to decipher - and the voices are rich and warm. Fantastic job!!!
Hi Julien and Patrick, Christmas has gone by and I now hear your lovely version of this song, i like it very much. I imagine that you would also do a great interpretation of "Maria durch ein Dornwald ging". This is a great song, i think not easy to work. But this would be my wish for next christmas if I are allowed to have one... Perhaps together with Patrick and/or Christy-Lynn? now following you...
That was great! I did not understand very much of it but it was sung very well. Thank you, Julien and Patrick, for singing this for us and uploading this. Being Jewish, I do not get much around Christmas time, but this was a pretty darn good Christmas present. Thanks again!
Hi Julien, hi Patrick, it's always a pleasure to hear your voices, especially a good old german christmas song. I wish you both a merry christmas, and I hope, the community can also hear a lot of new songs in the future. Greetings from good old Germany :-)
***** Seriously if i could i whould like to sing with you, in future, I´m a passable singer, i sing in 3 chors but I´am in Germany you don,t even know me soi know that this wish cannot be forfilled, but I like your style of musik and it whould be an honor...
Julien and Patrick, thanks so much for performing and posting "Lo, How a Rose...". My chorus (the Twin Mountain Tonesmen in San Angelo, Texas, USA) perform this song in English every Christmas. Sounds like the same arrangement, too. I knew it was of German origin, but I never heard and saw the German lyrics before. I also never saw the third verse before (we only do the first two). Hope you have a Merry Christmas and great New Year! Keep up the great singing!
The flickering didn't detract from the beautiful melody. Lovely carol, brilliantly performed. Looking forward to more treats in 2014. Joyeux Noel and a Happy New Year Kind regards
Julien -- what a lovely Christmas present -- thank you! One of my absolute favorite of all carols, and I've never heard it in German. Merry Christmas to YOU!
I appreciate the music that you do and wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year too. If you are ever in the Seattle area please let me know. Perhaps you could have a visit with our Sno-King Community Chorale!
wow i was so mesmerized by you fellas and your singing i actually didn't notice the video issues. no joke!!! had to rewatch after seeing the comments and i was so surprised! nice magic trick : ) Merry Christmas you two
Another beautiful collab of you guys :-) I've just read about the stormy weather in your area. I hope that it's not too bad, and you'll have a safe and Merry Christmass!
Thanks Vern! ;) We actually used the audio tracks I recorded last year for my Christmas albums (this song is on album #2) and Patrick recorded a bass and a tenor, using my lead and baritone. Our recordings are one year apart. Multitracking magic!
Hello Julien, this is one of my most favourite christmas songs! You two did it wonderful! Even though, this is the first time that I have to say at barbershop music: I like it better with a soprano/countertenor/falsetto. The soprano is so angelic especially in this song.
Beautiful! My favorite German Christmas carol, and I much prefer it in German than English. Thanks for sharing. Sorry I'm just finding this now. Merry Christmas! I sing in a German choir here in America, though I speak little of the language itself. Fortunately, there are a couple native speakers who stand on either side of me. We have a deal- I give them the right notes to sing, and they make sure I pronounce things correctly. It works out well! :-)
Thank you, I'm glad you like our recording and that you can appreciate this version being in German. I bet German is very hard to learn as a foreign language.
I know this was a while ago, but seeing this again, I have a question about the arrangement. Obviously the lead is singing the soprano line from the SATB version an octave lower. It seems bass is singing bass. Is tenor singing the alto line and baritone the tenor line? Or is tenor singing tenor and bari singing alto down an octave?
Hey and Happy New Year! This is actually a TTBB arrangement with melody on T2, like in the usual barbershop context. It's more or less like SATB, with Soprano sung by the barbershop "Lead" an octave lower, and Alto sung in its original key (by the barbershop "Tenor"). The Tenor part in SATB is sung by the barbershop "Baritone", and Bass is Bass is Bass is Bass. :)
Beautiful, and so nicely pronounced. Lovely work. I realize I'm about a decade late, so no worries if it won't be fixed any time soon! But just in case ... You've got a couple of translation lines mixed up 1) wie uns die alten sungen - says 'of Jesse's lineage coming' and should be 'as men of old have sung' 2) von Jesse kam die art - reverse the above! 3) das roeslein das ich meine - says 'Isaiah 'twas foretold it' should be 'the rose I have in mind' 4) davon Jesaja sagt - swap with above oh well, there is one more but I don't see a way to fix it - obviously sometimes the translation you've used and the phrasing don't work out right. Not blaming you!
***** You deserve a lot more subscribers. It's just so consistent when you sing. It's just outstanding. No matter what language you sing it also sounds as if it was your native language
SpelesimLP Thank you, I appreciate it. :) You can support my work by visiting my Patreon page and pledging a little something towards my music, if you'd like: patreon.com/trudbol Thanks! :)
A nice effort but the tempo could have been considerably slower Julien. It somewhat felt like a bit of a race to squeeze in 3 choruses. Now a shameless plug for "Now Is The Month of Maying" and Billy Joel's "Lullaby" as additions for your to-do list. Keep 'em coming Julien ;-)
***** But its quite similar, isn´t it? The bass line is almost the same... And the characteristic eighth notes in the alto at "und hat ein Blümlein ´bracht" :)
gradpigodemosviedaff Indeed. But the Barbershop-version is just TTBB, so there's no alto. I think most arrangements of this song have similar rhythmical patterns. For this tune, people are so much used to those, that they kind of make the song, I guess.
Excellent! I too, wondered about the pronunciation and now that you mention your friend is of German decent, that totally makes sense! Wonderful presentation. I enjoyed it tremendously. Alles gute fur ein Frohes Weinachtsfest und ein Gluckliches Neues Jahr! Viele bussis aus Seattle.... Rita Harris, Broker facebook.com/seattleareahomesforsale

Joyeux Noël Julien. Last night, while I was wrapping gifts, I listened to your albums which I purchased last year.
Merry Christmas to you as well! Thank you for supporting my music. :)
Lovely. Simple, straightforward arrangement is very appropriate for this beautiful old carol. Thank you! You brightened my Christmas Eve eve.

Thank you! SATB is nice, yes. But we had neither a high counter tenor nor a female singer in the collab, so we had to stick with TTBB :).
Merry Christmas Julien!!
Merry Christmas!
You too. :)

I started on UA-cam with "Baby On Board", it was my first video, late 2008.

Ouf, j'ai cru qu'on ne t'entendrait pas chanter pour les fêtes... Les chants de Noël en barbershop quartet, c'est un peu ton fief, quand même. :D
Is this from michael praetorius?
He did an arrangement of this song too, but we sang another version, which is written in Barbershop-style.
