Hi again Dan, since watching this video, I got to doing a little bit of research myself which may be handy to you. I was making inquires regarding mooring fees on a canal in the midlands. Whether or not this would be true nationwide I don't know, but it does sound feasible. the info I got was to expect mooring fees to vary between .35p to .90p per foot length of boat per week (depending whether it's in a marina or just canal side) which when worked out sounds about right. Anyhow, we are going for a trial run by taking a narrow boat holiday at the back end of September. Thanks for all your encouragement so far, you seem to be a great lad,
Eddie.
Love seeing someone enjoying a great life on their terms.
Dude why would people dizz you off for working 2 days a week? I live in a Farmhouse in France I run a small ground working business, I only need to work 10 full weeks per year. But its enough. I would say the people dizzing you dude are just jealous! I would rather live like you or me any day! No one ever said on there deathbed " i wish i had done more work " . Puck work. People will be fighting over it when you and I are dead! Have a good life.
You sound like a bighead. yuck
Well said sir.
Very helpful thank you. Definitely planning on getting a Narrowboat when I retire. Probably around the 45ft mark.
I love your enthusiasm and informative videos- great stuff!
I've just (about 30 minutes ago) had a light bulb moment and decided to get a boat. I figured I could moor up somewhere in London for work and head down to Brighton or somewhere on the weekends for a fraction of the cost of trying to rent somewhere.
I just need to find a decent sized boat (I wouldn't mind a double decker, if they do them) and one with a toilet that pumps out.
Even if the yearly costs are say, £2-3000, it's still cheaper than rent and you get the benefit of nature (depending on where you are).
these are the kind of vids that are just sooooooooo helpful THANKS SO MUCH
Very informative video. Been thinking about moving to a life on the water for a long time now and those costs are making it even more tempting. Thank you for sharing!
hi dan , thank's for your informative responce about getting clean water & removing dirty water , the cost is incorporated with in the licenseing = great , i wish that the cannal system, here in the states , had been reconditioned and operational instead of filled in , our loose !!! well take care and keep on cannaling , see yah later francis from the USA
Every video makes me tempted to skip the saving and go see the bank manager... Then I slap myself and put another note in the pot haha, Apollo duck is getting a fair bit of traffic from me lol keep up the cheery boaty vids Dan and be lucky :)
Hello Dan, what a very interesting set of video's you have compiled. My wife & I are considering buying a narrowboat at some future point (but as yet only a consideration). We particularly like your video's because you aren't trying to sell anyone anything, you are just very enthusiastic and passionate about your way of life and how others may benefit from what you can offer "Gud on yer lad".
While your info is not technically based in general, it really does give a very good heads up on what to expect in laymans terms. We really do admire and respect your attitude to life by keeping it simple and uncluttered, and by having a very low impact on the environment. We are a tad older than you by about 40 years, but we do take our hats off to you for making the enthusiastic and determined efforts that you are doing.
Eddie.
Eddie Stocker Thanks! I am glad you have enjoyed my videos and found something of use in them! For a long time in the run up to having the boat idea, all I wanted to do (and did for a lot of time) was be outdoors.
In my younger years I was extremely into gaming, literally I did was work and play games! It wasn't until I first started to go out walking, and discovered how much there was to see even in the small area around my hometown, that I truly found something that I was passionate about. From then on I was always looking for a way to live cheaply and spend at least a good few years of my youth being able to enjoy doing the things I loved. The idea at this point that these videos would be at almost 3 million views in total is absolutely crazy but if somebody such as yourself takes any value from them, then I count that as reason enough to keep them coming!
Good luck with your future plans, whether they are boat based or not!
All the best, thanks for taking the time to comment,
Dan
Absolutely brilliant mate!
thanks for making these videos.
Living on a boat is becoming more of a reality for me i think.
Very helpful video. To not have to deal with a gas/electric or any other utility company ever again sounds like my idea of bliss :)
some great info in this thanks been looking and looking for a boat recently just waiting for the right one at the right price
I really love escaping with you on your narrow boat even if its 75 degrees here in California.
Thank you for this video Dan, its something that 3 of us are considering doing and this has been really helpful. Hopefully, we will see you in the waterways!
I found this video very informative. So I must say thank you to all the information given. I've only just reserved myself a birth in droitwich spa. I'm still saving for/looking for the right boat to come along. I currently work full time to support the cost of buying the boat and startup fees etc, but it would be so cool to be able to switch to part time so I could get some time to actually go out to places on the boat.
In fairness most boaters' costs will be MUCH higher than these. Continuos cruising will burn hundreds, perhaps thousands of pounds of diesel. Pump outs every couple of weeks at £15, gas several bottles a year. Tilley is a very short boat in narrowboat terms so most boats will be paying twice these figures. Servicing of the engine etc etc. But fair do's if you can do it for this price!
I enjoy your videos the information very helpfull
Thanks so much for this, I'm currently searching for a narrowboat to live on! I'm really looking forward to it. As for other video ideas, how about what essential items you need, and how to steer in reverse (hired one yesterday, got the hang of going forwards but not backwards haha!)
What a thoroughly nice guy :-) great video and a very comprehensive breakdown of costs. Cheers, I'm going to watch some more of your videos now.
Nice and cheap! I wonder have you got any plans for exploring the canal network like cruising do to London or Birmingham or other big trips? I like the sound of the stove cooking video's Dan
Thank you Dan, for all your vids and allowing us to share in your life.
Having watched your personal journey and this video, I have taken the step to make the big Life choice.
Now I'll have to do my homework in preparation for the next chapter in my life.
Might need some tips on the way if you're willing?
Ps, I've asked Santa (hinted to my son) for one specific gift this year and thats for a certain ebook... :)
Would have loved a signed copy but alternativley, a future video highlighting to my 13yr son Declan what he (and other vewiers kids), can lookforward to as a teen boater would be awesome too! Thanks Dan for being an inspiration.
very nice guy great vid keep up the good work
cant wait till the winter mooring vid :D keep em coming
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!! Thank you :)
Really good and informative video. Great.
Thanks.
Peter
Great video and lots of useful info... Thank you for making this one. Sadly, I still have to fulfill my dream of travelling on one!! Lol
Great video mate, really informative and helpful 👍
I rather liked this video great information, helpful for sure, would love to see the cooking videos of course. I personally would love to be cooking on my own narrow boat! I love cooking different recipes and living on a narrow with those wonderful sights right outside the window would be very inspirational. In the near future I will come in to some money hopefully if all goes well... a narrow boat life hummmmm :-)
Brilliant thank you. very enlightening
hey im 10 and i whant to live in a boat when im older but what do you think ?
Good lad, concentrate and try your absolute best at school.. And you will have anything you want.. just remember if you want it, work for it... and you will be rewarded with it
Good luck son :)
Andy Allison
thank you Dan food for thought
I want to see you cook a proper "British" meal ie Roast beef with the trimmings, spuds, pumpkin at least two greens and of course Yorkshire Pudding, then I will believe that that little stove of yours is the real deal!!!!
***** Funny!!!
you have been generous with your information ,i'm happy your yearly living expenses are reasonable , in the states its 7x;s that and i am not wealthy and budget everything . do you have a [ lister ] motor they're made like a fine tuned instrument. the lysander is up for sale according to another's video i wish i lived like you . thanks
I like your life style!
I would love to some day go to England and see life on a canal boat as opposed to a hotel. Just a dream for now.
Great, I've had many long cruises on the cut, but as a single elderly man, I can only dream, unless I find a mate or partner to share the experience of cruising the french canals.
Hi Dan and good morning. Hope you are well. Are you enjoying the start of winter. I heard you mention diesel just a quick question how many litres is tilly and also what diesel do you use is it red, normal, bio or shell V Power haha. Thank Aidan
Hi Dan
I intend to live afloat when I turn 55 all being well. Trouble is, living in Essex all the expenses seem to be double what they are elsewhere in the country. What part of the world are you in?
Great videos by the way.
Diesel last for ever... No if you have central heating.. that goes through 1ltr every hour or so
I like your video...I watched another boat vid and he had mooring fees of 1400 quid...You guys have to pay a lot. We would give our pols a lot of trouble for those fees!!! Boat safety cert. is like an MOT...we don't have that in Illinois but in Colorado, my son has to pay polution check for a car. OK, I hope you make a video that shows us around Tilly. thanks :) Chuck Maki
16 minutes and I still don't know the average annual cost -_-. very cool I hope I can do the same thing on a sailboat one day, sorry it was just a drawn out video and I was really curious as to the answer
hi matee! very interesting stuff but i didn't hear you say what it coasts for septic/waste water (toilet h2o/ dirte water) and clean water supply ??? $$$ , i'm from the USA up State New York area , i live in a mobil home /trailor park and thats included in the lot rent , see yah! take care and good luck , francis
francis missonellie Hello, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment, there are water points located along the canal which you can fill up from as you go. This is part of what the boat license pays for, for camping style toilets there are also places to empty along the canal at no additional cost, there is a small fee for the more substantial "pump out toilets" but I don't have one of these onboard so don't really know the specifics. Thanks again, hope that helps, Dan.
Visiting this from 2022 😮😮😮
Good grief, I don’t dare to actually play the video out of fear that I will cry about how much cheaper things were! 😂😅
Cool video, I'd love to do it too one day. Can I ask what do you do for a living? You mentioned a job.
why is you're boat able to be so warm in winter? is it insulated, do you have an extra-large stove?
Wouldn't need a BSS for Sailing dinghy do you?
What is quid or quin vs pound? Sorry...Im USA...dont know the exchange. Your set uo looks awesome though :-)
How has all the flooding in the UK I hear about in the news been affecting you n the canal system this winter?
heya mate..being from nz we don't see narrow boats as such so im interested to know about social life on the cannal,,cheers mike
***** Remember dan...I have been watching you from auckland NZ for bout year and a half now...we fly out in 7 weeks to buy our NB and the first trip is up to meet you and shout you dinner bro!
hey Mike..are you thinking of moving over bruva??
Great video!
hi do u have to pay for water wen u fill up also how about emptying the ablushions
Hi Dan, great videos. What camera do you use?
Wish San Diego had canals
great video dan
Could you put the list of costs in the description please?
Hi Dan !
Been watching your adventures on Tilly, interested in buying a boat to live aboard myself, do you know if moorings are available to buy and where to look to buy or are they only rentable ?
Thankyou
do you mind if i ask where you work? as i was just wondering how you moved / lived on your narrowboat if you worked in one place?
thanks
very informative thank you :-)
You may have already done a video on this or someone else might have and I know it's been more than a year since this video but what's life like on your boat if you were to stay on it 24/hrs a day minus work?
What are the repercussions for failing to have a license?
you seem like a great fellow
do u have a tv ? or cost for internet
Hello! one question... where do you live?
what are your internet options, cost?
Where do u get your fuel from
How different is your book, "Narrowboat Lad" from "The DaVinci Code"?? lol
what do you do for internet ?
👍
that is so insanely cheap! Now you just gotta buy mobil internet and your all set, though can you park the boat anywhere in the country?
+Jon (A Questioneer) The river and canal network is interconnected well in the UK due to our industrial history so theirs a huge amount of places you can get too, not in any hurry though lol. Perfect lifestyle choice for someone who can work from anywhere like a writer etc. You appreciate nature & life more if you are closer too it.
+Jon (A Questioneer) The canals run right through towns with libraries that offer free internet. He'' have to learn warsailing
Sort of caramelised frog outlets braised upon saw blade finings shouting omnivore chord badgers. You know sense and it makes honey.
good luck to you living the dream. one suggestion is that you bounce around in front of the cameras i know you are enjoying yourself too much to notice but it looks a bit like you are nervous.
Calm down and make it seem like you are having a two way conversation. Let your audience relax but not too much. You were doing OK really.
Why do you go from "pound" costs, to "quid" costs. Is that to confuse someone? Aren't they the same thing? Why can't you just use Pounds for your demos?
It's the same thing. Like someone saying "bucks" vs. "dollars." Open your mind and learn something!
not very good to be honest and misleading
+LAURENCE HOGG The video is titled "My Narrowboat Living Costs" it lists the costs of running my boat.
Stupid comment
