I use amazon associate links so if you visit amazon through my links I may get a commission, this does not affect the price you pay.

The vast majority of locks you do yourself there are a few that are manned, eg, Grindley Brook at Whitchurch and the Frankton locks. I am going down a very quiet stretch of canal next week so will be doing some lock videos soon. Nobody showed me/us but I always get a friend to come on board if i am going through the local locks, it is much easier with more than one person but people go through them on their own all the time which i will film soon. It is all learning as you go along ultimately!

Thanks Dan, halfway through watching the video I got a call from a broker to arrange for me to view a boat I'm interested in

I saw a boat for sale today. Very tempting price, lovely looking, nice a shiny but just above the waterline, literally a few mill, right around the bow looked looked like an old rusty sieve. Deffinately a reminder to always look at every inch of the boats and never be taken in by first impressions!

Excellent video Dan, thanks, if you get the time I would really like to know about boat electrics, batteries inverters etc.
because they really are a mystery to me. Looking forward to the solo lock operation video!

Hi Dan, I think the owner should have the survey done and pay for it ,then they might make sure the boat is safer, cheers. Brian

Haha thanks... I am afraid they are a mystery to me too, if we get more nice weather like the last few days I will be having a proper clear out of the engine room below the deck there is still a load of hose pipes and things the old owner left so will see if there is any more video potential under there!

Aw wow! So some canals actually look like rivers!!!?? I can't wait! I think I will be spending most of my time near Alvechurch (a few miles out of Birmingham) as it's very countrified there. Then cruise every few days down to Gas Street Basin in the city. I have 2 cats and am wondering how they would get on with moving every few days...hmmmm. I told my mum I was getting a boat and she's worried about security for me at night....Any advice? :)

Great advise, thanks, this may be a stupid question but as i have never been on a narrow boat or a canal, do you operate the locks yourself and if so who showed you and how hard was it!

Is the boat particularly damp? If you have any books have you noticed any damage? I am thinking of living aboard of my MSc but I have a large book collection that I couldnt be without or allow to get damaged. If it is, have you found ways around it, like dehumidifiers?
    All the best.
