He has A levels (The American equivalent of A-Level is the High School Diploma) in physics, chemistry, and economics He also has BSc (Hons) (American equivalent US BS degree) in aerospace manufacturing engineering and sociology. He is a pilot and gained his fixed-winged private pilot licence at age 16. So he's not just a pretty face with a beautiful voice.

I was working in a different place for just one week, so my drive home was a new route. I saw a guy in a pick up truck at the same light, but we were going in opposite directions. For whatever reason, we locked eyes. A long moment. The light changed, and we went on our way. I don't know what it was, but the feeling was special. The next day, same time and place, it happened again. This time we both smiled. The last day of that particular week, we met up again at that same light. This time we laughed, and he mouthed a hello. I said hello back, but as we drove away, I knew I would never see him again. I had a boyfriend at the time, so I would never have tried to run into him again. My boyfriend became my husband, and I never did see him again. Though we never actually met, I felt a very strong connection to a stranger, that still brings a smile to my face many years later. He was "beautiful -- it's true."

He wrote Monsters when his Dad was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease, and no donor could be found. (James wasn't a match). His Dad appears in the video with him, at a time when he probably didn't have long left. It's quite emotional to watch, but you don't have to cry, BP; as a result of "Monsters" release, various strangers offered to be donors... and one was a match. His Dad is still alive, 5 years after "Monsters"was written.

This song was EVERYWHERE in the UK when it came out. You couldn't move for hearing it in every shop, office, etc all the time. To the point that he became a bit of a joke, but he's got a great sense of humour and a super voice and has managed to weather the mickey taking. But he deserves to be respected more as an artist. Really interesting guy too; intelligent, socially aware, and a veteran.
I always interpreted the song and video as he saw a pretty girl and thought about what life could have been for him but he had a plan to commit suicide so he lived a lifetime in that moment with her but it was never to be. He literally left everything behind, by emptying his pockets, and jumped.
James blunt is one of my favorite song writers. He writes from his heart and u feel every word he sings because of it. His voice is angelic.

I think this is about seeing someone you just broke up with, and they are with their new partner. For that split second you make eye contact and all the flood of emotions comes back, but then you realize that there is no going back and you just have to move on. I know it seems like it’s an odd way to preface a topic, but when you look at it like two ex’s seeing each other in passing it kind of makes more sense. All of James Blunts music is very emotional and can bring tears in some cases. I highly recommend “Monsters”. Yes, it’s emotional and might make you cry, but it’s also extremely touching and beautiful. Plus the fact that it’s about his dad, and his dad was in the video with him, makes the whole thing so very special.

This song is exactly what it sounds like! He even said it himself that it's a little creepy! It's about seeing his ex on the subway with another guy that he didnt know about! He was quoted saying, "You’re Beautiful’ is not this soft romantic fucking song. It’s about a guy who’s high as a fucking kite on drugs in the subway, stalking someone else’s girlfriend when that guy is there in front of him, and he should be locked up or put in prison for being some kind of perv.” Lol But Monsters is a very emotional one! I loved this song when it came out.. and heard it for weeks or months before I saw this video. The video disturbed me terribly. I really changed my view of the lyrics and his song. Then to learn that James Blunt is a British military officer… why this video? Not your fault of course.

When he said "he got a plan" that part was just in his head wishful thinking. He knows he will never be with her.
This is so true. Decades ago I worked at our local police station. Another copper came in from a different station, I met him on the stairs. We both looked at each other and felt something and then we both moved on and that was that. All these years later, I still remember that moment and remember his name.
You're Beautiful blew up on the radio when if first came out. And yes, it can be creepy, no matter how the person looks. =/ Edit... this is also a censored version. It loses a bit of emotion in the "flying high" part. Versus the bolder (in voice as well) version of "fucking high." There is a video of a little girl signing to it in the back seat that cracks me up every time.

The premise of this song, 'You're Beautiful', is that he was F*CKING HIGH (presumably on weed?) when he had eye contact with her. The clean version & video say FLYING HIGH, but Blunt sings F*CKING HIGH on the album cut. Still not sure after 2 decades how that influences the interpretation of that megahit. Give '1973' from Blunt's follow-up album a listen.
