Shootz, I would say you should get a nest that you like and afford, from a company you know or saw some reviews about, and so on. I think the ants will thrive in any type of nest if the conditions are right 🙂
You can’t water this type of nest, that’s why it is not suitable for all ant species. Only for the species that leave in dead, dry wood. Many Camponotus species do so and I noticed since the colony was small in the test tube or in other type of nest, that they rather avoided humid areas. Hi, hm good question. If its well made there are no cons. Maybe only that you cant use it for every species. But fact is that I saw some cracking or space between wood and plexiglass plate, things that ruin all the experience and things that you have to worry less on 3d printed ore machine cut stuff that made it beyond prototypes and so on. Pros are that you don’t have to care about hydration for example 🙂 To expensive as a con I would add. You pay for the looks not for the utility but as a pro, you can make it after your own design more or less, make it expandable with that plugs that you can turn.
To be honest Shootz, I don’t know at what temperature they die. I had mine between 20-30 Celsius ( accidentally ) and they didn’t die. I am sure they can tolerate bigger ranges for short amount of time without dying. I keep mine at room temperature and I have low min in winter 21 and max in summer 27. In winter I let the arena at room temperature but I have a small heat mat for the nest. I hope this answers your question.
