Giovanni MICHELUCCI - (1964) - The HIGHWAY's Church (Florence - Italy)
The church is formally named after John the Baptist has also earned the name of the Highway's Church for its location (43°49'54.45"N - 11° 9'28.07"E) between the Highway of the Sun and the A11 Firenze-Mare Highway, and for the fact that the church was built for honoring the workers who had died during construction of the freeway. The Church was built among 1960 and 1964, on project of the architect Giovanni Michelucci (January 2, 1891 - December 31, 1990) [www.michelucci.it/]. The materials used for the building are stone and concrete for the walls, copper for the roof, oxidized to green on the outside and burnished blond on the inside. Marble, glass and bronze are used for the interior elements. The floorplan of the building is asymmetrical and follows sinuous curves creating a feeling of fluid space.The church is decorated with works of Marcello Avenali, Jorio Vivarelli, Dilvo Lotti and Luigi Venturini. The wise synthesis among technology and craftsmanship makes this church at once ancient and modern, and the plastic vigor of matrix expressionist that crushes and deforms the space, even though under the dependence from the traumatic effect of Ronchamp, and the extreme spatial synthesis of architectural and sculptural space makes this work the most important of the sixties and absolute masterpiece of the Nine hundred Italian's architecture.

La chiesa è dedicata a San Giovanni Battista ma ha guadagnato anche il nome di Chiesa dell'Autostrada del Sole per la sua ubicazione (43°49'54.45"N - 11° 9'28.07"E) tra l'Autostrada del Sole e l'A11 Firenze-Mare e per il fatto che la chiesa venne costruita per ricordare i numerosi caduti sul lavoro causati della costruzione dell'Autostrada. Fu costruita tra il 1960 ed il 1964, su progetto dell'architetto Giovanni Michelucci (Pistoia, 2 gennaio 1891 - Firenze, 31 dicembre 1990) [www.michelucci.it/]. I materiali usati per l'edificio sono pietra e cemento per i muri, rivestimento di rame per il tetto, verde ossidato per l'esterno e brunito all'interno. Marmo, vetro e bronzo sono usati per gli elementi interni. La pianta dell'edificio è asimmetrica e segue curve sinuose che creano un senso di spazio fluido. La chiesa è decorata con lavori di Marcello Avenali, Jorio Vivarelli, Dilvo Lotti e Luigi Venturini. La sapiente sintesi tra tecnologia ed artigianato rende questa chiesa ad un tempo antica e moderna, ed il vigore plastico di matrice espressionista che schiaccia e deforma lo spazio, seppur sotto la dipendenza dall'effetto traumatico di Ronchamp, e l'estrema sintesi spaziale di spazio architettonico e scultoreo rende questa opera la più importante degli anni sessanta e capolavoro assoluto dell'architettura del Novecento italiano.

I visited the church in 2004 on an architectural filed trip and shed a tear at how amazing , harmonious, truly organic and complete this project is. A masterpiece.
Very well presented, edited, audio timing synched and emotively suitable selection.
as i can appreciate an ancient greek temple's beauty, i can be enthralled with this amazing architecture of a christian church -- especially when it's presented so beautifully.

As usual, the video's great. The church looks in good shape, better now than when I was there in 1989. Michelucci was hard to appreciate in his time, but the buildings stand up well.

Questa Chiesa non ha funzione di parrocchia, ma è stata costruita dalla società Autostrade, che è ancora la proprietaria, in onore degli operai caduti nella costruzione dell'Autostrada del Sole.
Per quanto riguarda le sedute, quelle originali sono quelle che si intravedono al 2:43 sul lato in basso lato SX...
