Far in the future, mankind has continued to push the boundaries of science and technology ever further in the pursuit of intergalactic space travel and the colonisation of other worlds. Unfortunately, a computer virus manages to infect the computer systems running man's principle space station, activating it's on-board defence systems and becoming a serious threat in the process. To make matters worse, the sentient AI manages to convince the humans present on the station to ally themselves with it and to launch an assault on Earth.
Non-too happy with facing the prospect of facing threat of annihilation at the hands of their new cyborg overlords, Earth's remaining defence forces scramble in a last-ditch effort to destroy the repel the attackers and ensure the the continued future of humankind. As pilot of one of the attack ships repelling the invasion, the player must destroy wave after wave of enemy ships, robots and bio-mechanical abominations across five stages of horizontally scrolling, shoot 'em-up action.
The first thing anyone will notice about the game is quality of the artwork and graphics, which are, in short, stunning. The Neo Geo was easily the most graphically capable of the 16-bit era consoles, but Last Resort was released relatively early in the machines lifetime and it already looks absolutely stunning. With vibrant colours, multiple levels of parallax scrolling and attention to detail synonymous with SNK titles, Last Resort looks every bit the top-tier arcade shooter it aspires to be.
The game also features some genuinely excellent audio effects and music. The thumping bass-line and sirens in the opening level's backing track really helps get the adrenaline pumping as the player's ship cruises above the highway of a futuristic city that bears more than a passing resemblance to Neo-Tokyo from seminal anime/manga, Akira.
Although not quite a clone, Last Resort is clearly influenced by the R-Type game series, developed by Irem. Once collected, the player's ship can equip itself with an attack module/satellite that acts as both a defensive barrier against enemy projectiles, as well as an offensive weapon that can be fired at enemies by charging up the ship's power gauge. Unlike R-Type, however, the satellite module is not simply fixed to the front or rear of the players ship, but can rotate 360 degrees around the craft, allowing the player to launch it from just about any position.
Moving the player's ship causes the satellite to move around the main craft, but it can also be locked in place by pressing the 'B' button. Mastering control of the satellite becomes absolutely essential as later levels become increasingly difficult, with enemies attacking from every conceivable angle.
The player's ship can be upgraded with power-ups dropped by certain enemies, including missiles, homing rockets and missile batteries. Other collectables affect how the satellite's charge-up attack works, causing it to either ricochet or stick to the scenery.
Should you manage to beat all five of the game's levels, you're sent back to the beginning and made to play through the game for a second time before you get to witness the game's proper ending. The second loop is largely the same as before, although there are more enemies and some of the bosses gain new attack patterns that might catch you off guard. It's a shame that there aren't more levels, but this really is a case of quality over quantity.
With it's killer visuals, pounding soundtrack and fantastic gameplay, Last Resort is easily one of the best shoot 'em ups you can play and and certainly a title that all fans of the genre will be sure to love.

Absolutely one of the best shoot em ups ever made!
This is probably my favorite space shooter ever! Heck I even made it to level two once.
Its a tough game even when you figure out the strategy to win you still get killed if you lose focus. The graphics are very distracting since you can get hypnotized by em.
@@worsethanhitlerpt.2539 The first round of 5 stages is tough but doable, the difficulty increase on the second round is out of this world. Those little bullet hell shmup loving millennials have no idea what a tough shmup is LOL.
@@teddym2808 To be fair, there are new shmups that are insanely hard as well.
Nahh raptor call of the shadows for PC is the best of the best
@@diego2817 I never played that one but I am going to give it a try.
The first stage looks like the beginning of AKIRA.
Yes, we cannot deny the inspiration
Also the crater from the opening
I think, that's like the point of it. To make it appeal to those folks that wanted more Akira.
@r33mote an anime movie, there was a game on the genesis that never came out
there's also the famicom exclusive ver. which plays like a VN
@r33mote a Manga movie from 1988
I think SNK and Taito were stuck in the shadows of Capcom and Konami. Don't get me wrong Capcom and Konami made great games for 2 decades but SNK made great games as well. They just are not recognized to the full extent.
They were well recognized specially SNK, but they Made horrible decisions in the late 90
Because they charged $200 to buy just the game.
Never heard of them, so I guess you are right.
I guess Taito and Capcom rip-off each other.
NEO GEO 4 LIFE!!!!
Last Resort is legendary with Spectacular graphics ABSOLUTELY AWESOME gameplay
This game was actually developed by many former Irem staff (maker's of R-Type, Gallop Armed Police Unit, etc.) This is why the visuals and some of the play elements are similar to those games, and later ones like In The Hunt (also by them).
I like the title intro with the leters effects and the mysterious song, it remember like the time of crono trigger
Last Resort Longplay (Neo Geo) [60 FPS]: Gorgeous graphics and solid shmup action is the order of the day in this corker from SNK!
Read the video description for my review!
17:08 love that guitar riff
Cut my life into pieces.
This game is so epic really glad that it came to the PS4.
Me too. I forgot how hard this was though.
@@Nemcoification Me as well, its fantastic.
Visuals are stunning and the music sound fx superb
Ran into this legendary work at an arcade in Mexico. It's 2022 and it feels like this game was in the future for it's time.
One of my favourite NeoGeo games
Finished this on ps4 recently, what a f'ing awesome game. Love it.
I'm in love with this game on PS4, its f'ing excellent, the music and atmosphere is incredible, parts of the levels are extremely difficult but the bossess fairly easy. What a game.
Thinking about buying this for the Switch, but there are other SHMUPS that I like as well. LOL
Just bought it and don't regret it one bit ! I like it better than Pulstar. I'm playing on easiest and still hard as nails. Haven't played Blazing Star yet...
@@TheActs2021 Blazing Star is good if you like the faster shmups that came out in the 90's. I never played Pulstar since it's an R-Type clone.
@@agreedboarart3188 yeah all these years later I still want to check Blazing Star out.
one of the video challenges on Nick arcade.
Yes indeed my favourite Neo shooter, just oozes Neo quality, the soundtrack alone is incredible 👌
I just got this on the PS2 comp disk, and the Turbo Grafx MINI so Im in 90s shooter Heaven.
I first played this game on my Neo Geo CDZ but I could never find the AES cart version. I think it was one of the very few games that didn't get a cart release (officially).
Neo Geo MVS/CDZ only
1. Crossed Swords II
2. Ironclad
3. Pulstar
4. Last Resort (maybe)?
There are a few more but I can't remember the names. One is like a Bubble Bobble game but horror themed.
this damn game used to piss the hell outa me, but still beat it. :P
MORE GAUGE, MORE STRONG
4:00 didn’t expect to find a Hy-Gogg from Gundam
Finally found this memory from 14 years ago. Last boss of level 1 was the one thing I remembered.
Great to see someone beat this game, as much as i appreciate the quality of this game, the one hit you go back to a very far away checkpoint isn’t for me..
What isn't for me is just the R-type design in general. Losing your ship's speed upon death plus the way enemies are placed and the environment itself being designed to kill you just makes for a miserable time.
Sadly one of my key memories of this game is the slow down. I was shocked that a powerhouse like the neo geo still had slow down like the lesser 16 bit consoles.
Tons of sprites on screen, the Neo Geo can only do sprites, not background layers, so all backgrounds are sprites as well, that's why it happens.
Another amazing game I didn't know about.
R-TYPE IS MADE BY IREM
AND LAST RESORT IS MADE BY SNK.
17:42 God mode enabled?
I thought you were really good, but bullets are passing through you. :P
No cheats were used
@@AL82RetrogamingLongplays How do you keep from dying when getting shot? Maybe I'm playing this game wrong.
what's the code because I can't get pass the 3rd level i have a burned cd that i play on my dreamcast will it work if there is such a code
@@karlmiller7395 I don't know of one for the NGCD version, but for MAME/real hardware there is a cheat that can be toggled in the Universe Bios cheats menu.
Just confirmed this on my NeoGeo Mini - the back of the ship is not in the hit zone, so bullets pass right through it. So what you see on the video is legit.
Man You are a hero
I played this game before and it was cool also I remember seeing this on nick arcade when I was a kid. 😀👍🎮
How is anyone supposed to clear this game. Do u get lives or energy bar?
lives. But it's best to bring a friend with you since single player mode has you dealing with respawn checkpoints.
@@figment1988 respawn is brutal in this game, the worst ive ever experienced in a game, its sends you way back. Saves states on the PS4 saves the day!!!!!!!! However, it will still beast you, its just difficult as fcuk.
@@mooch4274 and it's a bigger pain in the ass in AES mode where you have 3 credits
Love the industrial pixel art in this
Best shmup ever!
Why did this genre die out? You can hardly find such games these days. 😥
There are tons of new releases every year, the thing is being now a niche genre nowdays you need to get info from forums of groups dedicated to the genre to know about new releases.
This is the most amazing space shooter game i have ever seen!
DoDon Pachi ;),
Wait... dodon Pachi 2 , my mistake
That was until Blazing Star came out.
en insane tienes que tener un IQ de 180 para pasarlo
Pero lo juega con inmunidad
So difficult
This is a great Neo Geo game 👌
Crazy
Me gusta
For an R-type clone, it looks pretty great. Beautiful visuals and interesting ammo types.
I really want to love this game. But holy shit is it hard lol i can clear a couple stages in Pulstar. But ive never beaten the first stage boss in this game. And i tried like hell. Somethings not clicking with. And its a shame because i aoent a ton of coin for this on NGCD
There's a NGBC theme called like this game
Playing it the other day just got it on the aes. You can tell it's a lot like rtype.

Is this another of those arcade games that requires 2 playthroughs before giving you the credits?
1:43 Background looks like cityscape in Akira
The first great shmup for the Neo Geo. And one of the best ever made.
I wish I knew how to play as fast as you guys. I just started playing this one.
Nice, just saw this on the Arcade Archives on the eShop 🎮💪🏼
6’35 I hate this part! It was fucking to difficult
second stage is a slight to behold. Absolutely beautiful game.
*Playing this game on emulator. It seems like I dont get the amount of power ups this person is getting. Weird.*
Another R type game with a different name
Same devs thats why.
Been looking for this game for years!!!
I ended the game but game over isnt showed it started again y
Why is it that once you beat the 5 stages it starts over again?
Oh wow it's like R-Type but faster and better. :/
pulstar is another shitty r-type clone... made by irem...
@@notkimpine Irem devs worked on some NEOGEO games Pulstar is one of them.
this all looks a bit familiar..
walter0bz with... akira?
Reminds me of Last Resort on Neo Geo
reminds me of R-TYPE
1:41 Megalophobia moment
wow, very fast reactions. congrat
I ve played this game 1993. I came until level 4. :-))
LMAO, love the enemy pilots popping out of aircraft after being destroyed. Game looks a bit slow though.
Its missing some sounds (instruments).
4:16
Doo Doo dern dern Da doo doo dern da doo dern Dern doo doo doo DERN!
When i first heard this song i knew i was going to love this game.
The name of the 1st Boss theme is "Vice" in case anyone out there was looking for it.
Such a shame that this isn't available for purchase via GOG or Steam. It's an arcade masterpiece.
My only complaint is that there were so few weapons and they weren't evolutive much
Пародия на шмапы.😂
gran juego 😃
5:41 A flying phallus is circumcised.
There is so much more happening on the screen than in R-Type.
Did SNK rip-off Irem?
Irem devs worked on Last resort and other Neo Geo games.
This is a VIDEO GAME. Some year later Blazing Star and METAL SLUG came out from Neo Geo, I consider them superior than this but these are legendary games! Spent entire days playing in game hall when I was young, you were obliged to be a champion because parents would not give a lot of money 😂
Please do video on Prehistoric Isle
