Aggressive driving behaviors and hard braking will have an effect
You left out two of the most important points… Wheel alignment and who’s driving…
You know it's gonna be a good Scotty lecture when the thumbnail already has his hands in the air. (I know that's about 80-90% of his videos hahaha)
Lol
4. The condition of the roads you frequently drive on.
5. Condition of your suspension (particularly the tie rods)
7. Speed
8.
How you drive your car .
also weight of the car
Tire rotation gotta figure that in to 😂
@@jayhockley8841 yep that plays a big role
I hope someone is archiving Scotty's videos. His vast mechanical wisdom should be considered a historical artifact that should be preserved for the ages.
Is that a woodie?😂😂😂
he'll be cryogenicly preserved at the Smithsonian 😁
Perfect advice. Old tires are also dangerous even if they have full tread and no cracks. Over 5yrs old they handle (braking and cornering) much worse than when new. I had fun and tested this out on the track. It’s amazing how their performance (and thus their safety) degrades when they get old.
Scotty has impressive fingers! No matter how hard he pulls on them when counting, they stay attached!
😆😆😁
That first sentence is what his wife said
@Scotty i just wanna Thank-you for all you have taught me. My father owns a mechanic shop and i wanted to follow him but sadly he wasn't their for me growing up & you taught me like 75% of my knowledge as a mechanic. Keep teaching these youngsters a Great Trade. Unless we really go all electric cars and then no lights at night for our homes.
121,000 miles on Continental tires, so far! Best tires ever. They are 9 years old.
Dang, I've never got that much milage out of a set of tires.
One day.. POP. Blows out on you. Just hope you don't kill anyone.
I really wouldn't use tires past 5 maybe 6 years, I get what you're saying, but the integrity still has to be becoming questionable. I had a blowout on a wet road before, I don't play around with my tires after that.
theres no way, what are the treads at?
Count your blessings and go buy new tires right now
And don't forget alignment. Just as important and regulating the pressures, if you don't check it often, they can wear prematurely, often within just a few thousand miles.
Another important thing if you don’t drive much is to not let the car sit in one spot for more than a couple of weeks. The weight of the car resting on a single spot on the tyres will cause flat spots to form. Also, running the tyres helps bring the UV protective compounds (antizonants) to the surface of the tyres, helping to prevent dry rot.
Depends if you like to have some fun every once n a while too 😊
🤨
If I keep the ones on the back always on the back then those last forever but if they ever go on the front then they just get ruined because I am always trying to steer and get traction out of the front in all types of funky ways!
I replace the Michelin Energy tires on my Kia Niro every year. I put 100K on them and despite having plenty of tread left, I feel the belts loosen around 100K, minor vibrations. It’s mostly Highway driving at or below the speed limit. The Niro is used for escorting oversized loads.
Bought some michelins back in the early 2000’s and have never bought anything else since. Most comfortable and long lasting tire’s I’ve come across. Crossing my fingers. Prior to those I’ve had many other brands and most of em separated.
your not wrong there, Michelin all the way
best tire money can buy.... for the street anyway.
Thank you! Such great reminders in a busy world. I love these videos! ❤️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tires have a DOT date code on them. Can't be sold if tire is more than five years old. Considered unsafe after five years, mounted and inflated or not.
The code is a four diget number... the first two numbers signify the week, the second two the year. For example you may see DOT 4418. This means 44th week of 2018(November/2018).
They used to tell You to rotate the spare tire in with the other 4 tires. Then they came out with temporary spare tires. I have heard that some cars don't even have a spare tire at all now.
That's true, the new cars don't include a spare 🛞 tire.
A car tire dry rots because of exposure to the sun for a long time. The tire in the trunk is not exposed to the sun and can last a lot more than 5-6 years. Just make sure to check the pressure so it’s not flat when you need it. And also don’t rely on it to handle good it’s just a way to limp your car to the nearest tire shop
And how you drive. If you take off like a shot or break hard, you'll wear them out faster as well.
98k miles on a set of Continentals on a mid size suv. Brilliant tyre. Will be changing them this week but still road legal.
You forgot things like air temperature. Front end alignment. Worn front parts such as ball joints and struts or shocks. Lots of things go into consideration when dealing with tires
How aggressive the driver drives, how heavy the vehicle is and the type of vehicle it is as well as what it’s used for are also major factors… o feel like Scotty didn’t think this one all the way through
Thank you Scotty, I’d like to share with you and your audience that I currently drive a 2020 Chevy traverse with your original set of brakes and the original set of Continental tires with 120,000 km all highway driving, time to change
Thank you for all your videos.
I was surprised when I bought my 07 Magnum and it came with Nexen tires. They lasted for almost 10 years and I couldn’t believe it. Expensive but to me worth the price.
Also, where you park your vehicle, tires in a garage last a lot longer than tires that sit in the dirt and sun.
Bro sounds like the health inspector from Bob’s burgers
It also depends on the climate you live in. In Phoenix, I start looking at changing my tires after 4 years, regardless of how many miles are on them. The dry heat shortens the lifespan of anything rubber like tires, belts and windshield wipers.
I don't like having a blowout in 110° summer heat, so I change them out before that happens.
I’ve had Michelin tires last well over 100,000 miles and still have plenty of tread depth. However, at that point they no longer held air reliably.
Depends how you drive & what kind of tires. I hate those trucks with oversized off-road tires that never smelled dirt.
The quality of the roads is also a big factor.
Scotty forgot to mention the driver's driving habbits also can greatly affect the tires. If the driver of a Honda acts like a NASCAR driver then those tires won't last very long😮
When Scotty talks.....People are listening......
to save money.....even life......thank you Sir Scotty.....you are the best!
Hey Scotty, How about tire rotation? Does it help?
My tyres last as long as there's thread on it. I'd say 10-12 yrs.
I change my 2005 monte carlo's every 2 months with oil change 4 times a month because I drive across 5 states all the time for work. 426,714 miles and counting same transmission
WOW.
I have a 1995 Monte Carlo LS with the 3100 and only 91k miles. Which engine does yours have?
Thank's Scotty, I learn so much from your quick vid's.
Depends on how you drive; that's the most important factor!!!!
There’s 4 mounted winter tires in my garage right now that have a DOT date of 2001 and there’s not a single crack on any of them. This date non sense is just a way for scam shops to sell you new tires.
💜 OH SCOTTY, YOU ARE A TREASURE..THANKS
It also depends on where you are in the country. This is specifically for the US. If you live in an area like PA or WV then you will get far less miles out of a tire then if you were living in Kansas or Florida.
And why is that?
Rotation, Rotation, Rotation!!!
I've had good luck with Uniroyal Tigerpaws. They hold up well.
Also depends on how many burnouts u do n driving habits too. Always appreciate being refreshed getting older sometimes i forget . Thanks Scott
Bro there’s no way. My rear tires on my el Camino only last me a few months. By the way, why can I often see them blowing out white smoke when I floor it from a stand still or around a corner and I hear the engine rev up super high and I don’t really move anywhere…
that's part of maintenance, keeping them rotated and the spare plus equipment to change them
I have a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am. I had a tire go flat on me. I put the 22 year old doughnut on after putting air in it. I was able to drive on that doughnut for a week with no problems. The little bendy tab things wore off but that's it.
It's been back in the trunk for 6 months now and it's still got 50 psi in it like it's supposed to
Scotty you shocked me when you didn't mention your driving style.
I like to keep a plug kit, cheap pair of dykes and a small air comp in my cars. Trolley jacks in the trucks because those stock jacks really suck
Bought a set of tires for my pickup 35 years ago. Blew the truck up, switched tires to next truck. Then back in 2003 wife died traded truck for a van and put the tires
on a trailer. Just used the trailer to haul a load of brush to the landfill last weekend. Every new tire i have on my newer vehicle s loosed air over time. Not those old ones. Lol
Wish i could remember where i bought them.
Rookies... I was able to get 110,000 miles from one set and 95,000 from another set before Costco discontinued the brand! Now i usually only get 80k from some General Tire brand tires.
Michelin are the best !
My jeep wagoneer tires were bought on 2004 and they are bf good rich tires. They are still new and they are not cracked. How about that.
Depends on a lot more than that, driving habits as well as what kind of vehicle and how heavy it is along with what exactly you use that vehicle for also make a major difference.
Bill nye the science guy for all automobiles 😂
I recently replaced 9 year old winter tires hahaha, they were squeaking like mad and grip wasn't great :D
Scotty, true story. I bought a 1976 el camino 2 months ago, been driving it around on the tire that came with it, they are from 1976 as well.....45k miles on it. Good old Michelins.
You NEED to check those for dry rot...cracking on both the sidewalls and tread area... probably need replaced
Since you have buddies that are awesome chemists, do you know of anything to put on tires to keep them from dry rotting?
But is the correct air pressure determined by what's written in the door panel? Or by the specific tire?
Normal high driving. That would be no more than 15 MPH. Slower in corners because that’s just scary. Scotty I couldn’t resist😂
As a long time tech I have never seen Defenders last the rated 50k miles. Soft rubber compounds are most often then not fast wear. Yokohama avid ascends are rated for 60 to 65k for warranty. Most I've ever seen one last is about 40k with rotations every 5k.
My car is 60 and I've been using the same tyres for fourty five years and the tread is fine, there are no cracks and they don't even leak at all, no blowouts despite the age.
It also depends if you drive on mountain roads which have a lot of twists and turns. My commute to town wears out a set of tires in about 12,000 MI. It also depends on the quality of the road you're driving on,
The roads I drive on make a horrendous noise you can just tell your tires are being eaten as you go along.
Some 303 will keep them from dry rotting . Works well for wipers too
What about air pressure and wheel alignment
You forget to mention one important thing. Front end Alignment.
Tyres have differing rubber compounds which effect the rate of tyre wear its also a issue if the vehicles wheel alignment is off and suspension wear can also effect it. Drivers driving habits and road surfaces is also a issue. No quite as simple as Scotty says here.
People who don't know what happens say that dry rotted and cracked tire have to be replaced! I keep right on using them till they have no tread left, when the steel is showing, its time to change them
I’m about to get a tire Rotation
My tires are twenty years old on my 68 camaro garage kept they look new no cracks yet .
My experience with Michelins was different. They were very prone to getting flats, and the tread was almost gone after 40,000 miles. I found that the Firestones the truck came with originally were superior. Firestone no longer makes my size so i have to buy Korean tires.
That's because Michelins are soft and mainly comfort oriented tires.
Conti and yoko last quite long.
Don't forget that the sun and weather rot tires too. If the tires are not exposed to the elements they will last much longer.
Got a few Kumho KH16's & Hankook H406 OEM tires that are 23 years old & got 0 %dry rot or cracks , still won't use them for daily drivers though, just show car use
I think there is more to tire wear that he did not cover. I live in south Florida and tires here last roughly half the time they do on my family members cars who live in northern Michigan. It’s the heat. It just takes the tread off fast above 90s f. And we just had 80 days in a row above 90 degrees.
Love this guy
And if you keep them properly inflated! Very very important! Don't drive them much passed half tread!! You with never stop in rain and might hydroplane!!!@! Low tread is dangerous! 😞
There's also the 4th factor. How many times I had to turn this car around because the kids kept asking, "are we there, yet"?
🤣
I got 120,000 miles on my last set of Michelin MX/4. I kept an eye on the air pressure and rotated them every 5000 miles.
I have been a mechanic for 55 years never never ever saw anyone get more than 60000 on any kind of tire check your odometer!! tire pressure and rotation is very very important!! where do you people buy those 120000 mile tires ???
@@jimthompson3030 The car was a new 2007 Toyota Camry so I'm positive the odometer was operating correctly. I too have been turning wrenches for over half a century plus I have an engineering degree. I know just a little of what I'm talking about. I was working at the time at a business that was 49 miles one way so I was basically putting 100 highway miles a day on my Camry, which now has close to 300,000 miles and the odometer still works. I've always bought the best tires I could find and in my opinion, Michelin is it. My wife drives a 2016 Camry with over 150,000 on it and she's on her second set of Michelins.
OMG quality tyres here in New Zealand are only expected to last 60,000 kms. In reality i poo purchased michelin eco tyres snd they lasted almost 40,000 kms of Uber driving.
Those imported hilux surfs are pretty cool the 3.0L turbo diesels are pretty cool engines
I always check my tire pressure weekly.
I know a guy that only lasted a weekend
He said they were bad tires and went to complain to the tire shop
A week later, his differentiate broke. I wonder why 😐
And rotate, rotate, rotate! Rotate them every other oil change at least. Assuming u change ur oil when u should! It a tire wears out fast then alignment! Any decent shop will make sure all parts are good (ball joints, tie rod ends etc) when doing one. I'm a tech btw just my 2 cents!
Car stuff reminder: Tires maintenance
Depends on how you drive!!!!!
Here in Riyadh almost everybody going with the cheap chines tire becouse off the heat no tire will last more then 2-3 years
you forgot to mention allinment and shock/struts. if you keep the suspension in great condition a Michelin tire will rot out before it wears out.
Thank you.
Keep them rotated every 5000 miles and check the alignment once a year.
What happens if your tire starts to crack? Itll pop?
I want 2 ask you question I got a rrav for 2011 when I put in reverse the camera don't come on
Also depends on the depth of tread originally on the tire. Sure, 60-70 thou is typical.
You forgot it also depends on how you drive the car. The harder you drive, the faster the tires wear out.
You can coat the spare tire with diesel and it keeps it from dry rote too WD40 isn’t the same way!
Yep, tire pressure and how you drive.
Well I had 16 yr old tires on a Corolla so idk but idk how many kms the tires travelled though
What about the fourth main thing… alignment?
Weight of the vehicle is a big factor in tire longevity
And how you abuse 'em.....
Where can I get the rims that are on that truck from? Does anybody know?
Try junk yards, and places that sells hub caps
The factory good Year wrangler's on my four wheel drive Silverado lasted 86,000 miles.
That's even deflating them 3 time's to drive in the sand...
Why do you have to deflate them to drive on sand?
@@coreturkoane5570 tire lay's on top of the sand instead of digging in.
@@philllsxga.7737 Gotcha
