Classic film!!! Still love the Grand master flash bit asmuch as i did when i first saw this way back in the 80's...before the days when money and ego runined the whole hip hop scene, it was still in its pure form then!!
Lee making his mural, Flash in the kitchen scratching the beats as Fab 5 Freddy is sitting and watching and the Rock Steady Crew walking up the hill to go break...This is Hip Hop made visual in 60 seconds...Wild Style
@N2OH how right you are, have made my 19yr old son watch all these films, beatstreet, breakdance etc and told him dont call yourself a hip hop head til you understand the roots. PEACE
you know flash was the greatest turntablist of all time. he learnt from kool herc and grand wizzard theodore and took it to another level. respect to flash!

we watched wildstyle, breakin, and beat street at a triple feature 69th and market upper darby. back in the day. me and my boys all had on our white lees with different color izods. shells wit laces, i had sky blue suede pumas that turned my socks blue. wildstyle was the best by far. then beat street. we didnt even sit through breakin
Luv this. But I remember seeing this when it was first ever broadcast on TV/cable and there's a different version to the Grandmaster Flash track. This here is the DVD released version. There's more bells and chimes added to this song but i guess they cut it our and/or re-edited it. Still sounds good tho. Glad I caught it.
oh man, this is the dvd version that came out a few years back. and it sucks! they couldnt get clearance for the bob james "mardi gras" track that flash drops at 1:18. the first time i watched it, i took it out, put it back in the case and returned it. ill just keep my vhs copy.
@osidecoqui ....You are absolutely right. They could not get permission from Bob James to allow the original "Mardi Gras" song in the DVD version. So Fab 5 Freddy and the producers re-edidted this version. I have the original VHS version to. A classic and rare find. Don't ever lose your copy. I no longer play the VHS version because I don't want it damaged.
@nycpd75 Well from what I understand, hip-hop as a term was coined from a block party when one of the Furious Five's relatives went to the military. No Limit brought that back when Master P released "Make 'Em Say Uh" and Busta Rhymes sang "Fire." That was little over ten years ago. Its out there, the studios just don't cater to that though.
Actually the tuntables flash is using aren't "pre" sl1200 tables. I think they are the sl1600 models. Quart direct drive platters. The 1200's came out in the early (very early) 70's. It started with the 1200's.. dj's prefered those size wise...those sl1600 models are kind of hard to find. They were usually used in radio stations so you weren't all that apt to see them in your local catalogs...unless you were reading something like "STEREO REVIEW". I research those tables back in college.
@fakecape the track at the end is on the wildstyle lp itself if my memorie is correct.the music was done by a guy who was in the group blondie ..chris stein i think..
2nd track hes cutting is mardi gras by bob james, but its a bit different because somehow they did not get that song licensed for the wildstyle dvd. It sounds very similar thou. 3rd track is crime does not pay from the wildstyle soundtrack !
wow! what happened to the original sound. I have this movie on vhs and the beat on my tape is bob james. I've had the tape since 1983. the only sound that was the same was the beginning and the end.
@fatshoolaces Thank you so much! The first song I produced when I was 17 on Reason 1.0 used a manipulation of this bassline as the main bassline. Never knew where it came from till now. Good on you sir!
Don't forget Lady Pink - also real life grafitti artist. She's not just some actor girlfriend -she was the real deal. Made whole car Murals. Cute as hell too.
@MrTecism well its suppose to be bob james 'take me to the mardigras' .but they put an edit track that sounds simiar.,due to copy write protection.if you can find the original copy of wildstyle it will have the proper soundtrack.
@UOMMTV Ive got about 5 boot boxes of cassettes. ive been taking one or 2 here & there and listening to them. been finding lots of song I havent heard in years. Ive pretty much lost hope for all the new hip hop.
This mix is not on the soundtrack. However, I have the original movie on VHS. The second song that Flash mixes is different from the original movie. The original movie used "Take me to the Mardi Gras," by Bob James. It was later changed on the DVD updated version to avoid copyright infringements.
dude Im so in what your saying, that Mardi Gras shit was the whole hook in that sequence, bob james should know better man, how could they not get clearance, this was the scenne in the movie that went stellar for alot of peeps man...oh my god...!!!

@UOMMTV Ive got about 5 boot boxes of cassettes. ive been taking one or 2 here & there and listening to them. been finding lots of song I havent heard in years. Ive pretty much lost hope for all the new hip hop.
