The « Simplement Deux » is a catchphrase from French WWE announcers Philippe Chereau (he was ring side at BackLash). He says that after every 2 counts during matches so we just wanted to credits him lol
For people outside France, these 2 commentators are a HUGE part of why wrestling is popular. They are above U.S. commentators for me and I speak both languages.
It was incredible from a logistics standpoint. It's like the entire crowd practiced before the show. haha
They are doing some great work if you can get that many people all jazzed up for wrestling. I love it.
@@ohwrestling Christophe Agius the second iconic french commentator even said to Philippe Cherreau "you created a monster" 🤣 it was so fun to be here making history and showing the world our love for professional wrestling 💙🤍❤
@@ohwrestling Agius and Chereau are the French commentator since WCW 2000.
Just to add even more context for those who would want some :
- The Phenomenal chant comes from a popular french party song. It is common for french people to sing it when someone does something either genuinely spectactular or very silly at a party or a sport event of any kind.
- Some other typical french chants heard during the night were "c’est pas gentil/c’était méchant" = "that’s not nice/that was rude". These chants are meant to be kinda goofy and are always sung at french wrestling shows espacially when heels do heel stuff.
- At some point the french audience at Backlash also shouted "Agius Chereau" which are the names of the french announcers who were ringside. They’ve been commenting WWE on french TV for over 20 years and are considered as absolute legends by the french audience, because they are the voices of their childhood/teenage years. A lot of french wrestling fans almost see them as a second pair of parents.
Incredible context, thank you. Now the Phenomenal chant makes sense because it happened like a scene in a musical. I kept thinking "How do they all know what to say....?"
Tu as exactement tout dit, c été bien une chanson française des années 80 pour le phénomènal 😂 j'y étais c été une ambiance de ouf , pas une seule fois assis 😂😂🔥🔥✌🏽
@@guitart55 It was a special night
Most confusing chants must have been the "Michel! Michel!" "Bojolé! Bojolé!" "We want michel!" after the referee mistake during the women tag team match.
We want Michel !
It’s a referee character play by the UA-camr Sturry he is basically the man who had the idea for Jay USO’s entrance and asked the fans to do so he couldn’t be at Backlash but he was on live in twitch crying cause of this that was beautiful 🙏🏾
@@TheCassuis mec y’a que des fr ici
I didn't realize I missed so many chants. I was caught up on the simplement deux's, haha
@@ohwrestling if you wanna catch up with some details you could have miss, Sturry made a best of live of the react of backlash, it's in french but maybe automatic subtitles could be enough
and for more details about the infamous Michel Bojolé, in the kayfabe of Sturry's channel, it's an official WWE referee, but we never see him on television, cause he is the leader of video refering (VAR), so in fact he is useless cause in wrestling we never use video refering to prevent cheating, but the community really appreciate him, he sounds with a south french accent
Hello, as a Frenchman, I'd also like to explain the context. You have to realize that today's wrestling spectators are the children and teenagers of the years 1990-2010. I remember watching Randy Orton, Undertaker, Rey mysterio etc. on TV with my older brother and father, presented by the same exceptional presenters as today, who were able to pass on their passion to us for 25 years. At school, we collected WWA cards and reviewed the entrances and techniques of our favorite stars. So it was only natural that when we saw Randy Orton, who represented our childhood, we had to cheer him on. In American videos and commentaries, I often see people surprised that we knew the songs, but as I said, we were already doing it as kids, in broken English of course. But we sang them! It's also worth noting that singing at events has been part of our culture for decades, whether in video games with KarmineCorp, which also brought in this ultra base that comes from soccer at base and is now found in almost all competition structures. In the end, we don't train in advance to be in sync, what allows us to be is just the fact that we all know the lyrics, because they're French references from our generation and it's ingrained in our culture to sing in unison at events.
And I sincerely believe that if this time it was so magnificent, it's because a whole generation has been waiting for this for years, wishing to show their love for the stars they've cradled throughout their childhood.
I sometimes see comments saying that we ruined certain moments with our repetitive chants. But you have to understand that the organization asked us to make as much noise as possible to show French interest in WWE, which we did. But above all, you have to understand that the vast majority of people had been waiting for this event in France for years, some for over 20 years. Add to this the fact that tickets were VERY expensive compared to what the average French person can afford, and many went without in order to be able to take part in this event, which explains the excitement and joy on site. But above all, I'd like to thank all the people outside France who gave us so many compliments, because we sincerely wanted to show the world our love for this sport, this organization and the extraordinary athletes we grew up with.
Very well articulated. And for what it's worth, the crowd made an otherwise 'OK' event spectacular. The crowd was another part of the show.
Amen Clément !
Well stated dude. As an American I absolutely loved every bit of the french crowd!! It made the whole show so much more exciting to me. I could "feel" their excitement. I hope that they continue with the international #WWE PLE's and each location brings its own equally electrifying energy.
Anyone complaining is weak minded lol your chants were electrifying and memorable!
Très bonne explication ❤
I was there and very proud ! Vive la France et merci pour les compliments 🙏
Was is as electrifying as it looked on tv? More I bet. That crowd BOUNCED!
@@ohwrestling Oh thanks for your question and sorry for my english in the arena it was most incredible than when I watched after on TV ! I hope in the future it there will be another PLE in a big stadium and juste imagine the noise
@@ohwrestling It was my first WWE show and the chants were so freaking loud, i got goosebumps, i cried when we all sang Randy's theme. It was a hell of an experience and i can't wait for WWE to come back to France ! (Sorry if my English is bad lmao)
@@mxam2140 Your English is great. I bet Randy cried later after hearing the crowd sing his song twice in 2 days.
Salutations du Canada, vous méritez un Wrestlemania!
The French crowd made more noise than the crowd at WM40
💯
I was there. I traveled from Switzerland to Lyon. it was my first ever WWE PPV i saw live. Man.. the Frenchs are Crazy. The day ill never forget in Lyon.
That's going to be a good memory. "Remember that time we went to Lyon for Backlash and the crowd was insane..."
@@ohwrestling Yes! It was so loud, you sometimes couldnt hear yourself scream. I hope they do another PPV soon somewhere around me.. :p Berlin is alittle far for me.
AJ styles got the royal French treatment indeed, and you know what happens to royalty there...
I felt like they were going to carry him out on their shoulders. He may retire and move to France.
In fact 11k people brought the atmosphere of a 500 attendance indy show. Enjoying every moment. Reacting to every move. And french chants we also heard "C'est pas gentil" when a heel does a vicious move. Means "this is not nice". Or "c'était méchant" meaning "that was rude". Same idea. AJ Styles had that unbelievable chant because french crowd sees him more as a living legend than a heel tbey need do boooh
I didn't hear those chants, that's great. The AJ Styles chant blew my mind. It was like a movie scene.
In the tag match Bianca/Cargill vs Kabuki Warriors, we sang "Bojolé" "Michel" and "We want michel" because one the (if not The) biggest wrestling youtuber in France Sturry has a goofy character named Michel Bojolé, who is a referree who explains weird calls in a match
It was a very french inside joke !
Lots of easter eggs in that PLE
in regards of the " simplement deux " chant , I was there in the crowd and even me was kind of bored during Backlash, I literraly stopped chanting that x) but couldn't stop the " IL EST VRAIMENT PHENOMENAL" chant cause Aj Style sure truly is PHENOMENAL. I still got stars in my eyes, what a great moment in Lyon !
He really is. I hope I can walk straight at his age. Nevermind jumping over the top rope.
Didn't this cause a noise violation
@@rox-tn1cf yes it did
@@rox-tn1cf Did it really? Wow.
@@ohwrestling hhh tweeted about it.
Thank you my friend for sharing with your community our beautiful french crowd. I think it was a historic moment for us and we wanted to show how passionate we are and how much we love WWE superstars. I hope they'll be back in the future for more "SIMPLEMENT DEUX !!!" chants.
Big up to WWE, big up to you guys and big up to the french crowd !
PS : sorry for my english, as a french person i'm not really good ^^
You're English is fantastic.
"Simplement deux" is a Philippe Chereau catchphrase on ABTv when he comments the WWE matchs. As in french, with his teammate Christophe Agius "Par dessus la troisième corde" (over the third rope) or "Où ça ? Dans le poteau !!!!" (where ? In the ring post !"). The crowd wants to pay a tribute to them and especially for Philippe Chereau with the "Simplement deux". ;)
Its International now!
@@ohwrestling perhaps ! 😄
your french is so good men
Bravo !! (de la part d'un français présent à Lyon)
Merci! Please tell my old high school French teacher, haha. Hope you enjoyed the episode.
Imagine if they changed all the Wrestling theme songs to be sung in French just for that event. I think they need to do it now after that crowd reaction
They have no other choice. They raised the bar
What about people who don't speak French 😂
@@ohwrestling Good thing they did.
@@jacobnankervis2537 We know the melody 😆
My Discord friends were there, pratically front row, and me...I was doing the dishes at McDonald's...
Tough luck my friend Stay Strong maybe you can be there too 😉
Putting that work in. Making that money.
I think the most impressive thing in these chants is how they can chant like that while they're french and English is not the main language of France, that's the impressive thing. For nearly three hours they were chanting in English, that's the passion and love.
Yea, the crowd sang Kingsom word for word. Thats love. I can't sing a non English song without sounding ridiculous.
I was in Smackdown, it was incredible. There is for sure a cultural thing with "soccer" crowd (OL stadium is 200 yard from the arena) but there is the sociology of the crowd too. 90% of the crowd was 15/30yo overexited wrestling geeks. In US crowd are mostly families with kids, plus they used to have WWE regulary.
US crowds are also very hooked on the "What" chant. It's all they really say. You would think after 20 years it would get old.
American crowds should chant that at AJ Styles, it's easy to translate. "HE REALLY IS, HE REALLY IS, HE REALLY IS PHENOMENAL!".
Usually it's UK crowds outshining American ones, now you see it's not just the UK bur France too and when they go to Germany in August it's gonna be just as crazy. Triple H said he has his eyes on Italy for the future and I think it's likely that Spain goes after that. Hopefully they'll go to Puerto Rico soon again, also to Mexico and maybe Brazil. Let football ⚽ fans show the world how it's done.
Backlash in PR was intense too. Helped that Bad Bunny was in the building.
We've always been louder. Props to the French fans singing Voices. Pips the Welsh singing Metalingus (Edge) by virtue of not the official language of the country
I dont know if you will see this comment. The "il est phénoménal" song became really popular when we won the football world cup, this song was mostly used for Zidane. Imagine that the crowd treated AJ style as if he was Zidane ... i dont think you can give someone a bigger compliment as a french.
And by the way, thank you for speaking French ❤ u good man
Still a phenomenal moment. Shame WWE didn't capitalize on it.
@@ohwrestling I had a tear when I saw Randy Orton reacting to the crowd
It tooks them 20y to aknowledge us and come... We are already happy with what we had man
Dude, your french pronunciation is so good that I have a hard time believing that you actually failed french when you study it. But I guess it makes a good context for your video. Sweetness~~
Thank you! I really appreciate that. Trust me, I failed it. A few times :)
thank You very much for the kind words, it's pretty accurate ! I believe we simply did the same thing we always do in every house show, since we get to see WWE only once a year ! tho this weekend was very special, since we had our first-ever Smackdown AND PLE back-to-back, We had to make it worth it !
I just hope WWE keeps on bringing some PLEs to France, and hopefully we can get one of the Big 4 in the future !
I don't think you have to worry. After those events and reactions, WWE will be back. Trust me.
I'm french and i'm proud Backlash was very nice
It was a strong show
Every WWE superstar is jealous right now they all wished they where there so they could experience what AJ Styles experienced...
💯💯 I hope they can all experience a moment like that
5:18 it was perfect :)
WHOO!
And I'd say that you missed 4 things in France ; Butch (gotta find last year's liveshow to understand what happened with him), Baron Corbin (same, you need clips of liveshows for him), Samy Zain (we dread to see him perform in France) and Roman Reigns... I'd even bet that Seth Rollins would have had crazy reactions as well, very popular around here... Oh well, too much to write for the future, we'll beat Backlash Lyon 😂
Great bro ty for supporting us ❤ from Lyon (and u'r french is like my english x) where are our teachers ?!)
I had a great teacher. I was just really....REALLY bad at French.
You said it pretty good!
We were so thriller to see WWE in France!!! So we made so noise 🤣
Thanks! You made all the noise haha
Hello, I would just like to correct you on a few points. I have been living in the USA for 8 years, and before that, I lived in France and watched wrestling from there. The chant ( simplement deux) doesn't come from soccer but is rather a tribute to the commentators Christophe Agius and Philippe Chereau, who are the two voices of wrestling in France. They are like our Jim Ross and Jerry "The King" Lawler. And every time we watched wrestling on TV, when there was a count of two, the commentators Philippe and Christophe would shout (simplement deux) 😊 6:02
Additionally, the song (il est vraiment phénoménal) also doesn’t come from soccer, but rather from a popular music group, and it’s often a song used in parties when dedicating it to a friend or something like that. Thanks for your video love it. ☄️🔥
Thanks for the info, I appreciate it!
To be fair, a lot of chants were maybe too French to be understood by a worldwide audience .
For example , during a match where the referee botched, the crowd chanted “Beaujolais !” , “ Michel !”, and “ We want Michel”.
It a reference to a very famous UA-camr in the French wrestling game called Sturry. Sturry is actually the reason why Baron Corbin was cheered during the last live event in Paris (he is that famous in the local wrestling community)
He plays a character called Michel Beaujolais (Beaujolais is the name of a famous French wine), an incompetent referee summoned to explain bad ref decisions.
Funny thing is that Sturry was live on twitch during the show and started crying when he listened to the crowd chanting “we want Michel”. He said “ Guys you are screwing the match up right now. Stop. I created a monster😂”.
His face appeared on some signs in the crowd , including one where he makes an impression of Vince McMahon.
That's awesome. Good Michel got some recognition. Probably spiked his Twitch numbers as well.

We have the best crowd world wild
I can't argue with that. Everyone else has to step it up.
The crowd was epic!
💯
For the entrances, don't forget that the average French person is very bad at English. I can't even imagine if a wrestler had a French song as a theme song, the crowd would have killed it.
Maybe one day the WWE will decide to sign a French wrestler.
The French crowd singing a French wrestlers theme would have been a sight to see
The most funny part for the song phenomenal is the name of the band who create the song.
They call the phenomenal club for aj styles to the bullet club
So phenomenal club>bullet club 😅
Ha! I would agree with that 😂
You miss something (but this is not a big thing, i understand) : during the women's tag team match, Belair-Cargill/Asuka-Sane, we see the ref making a mistake, so the thing first "tu t'est trompé" (you were wrong), then "Bojolé", "Michel" and finally "we want michel", the last 3 are a moment created by Sturry, french wrestling youtuber, who make videos about weekly shows and PLE, in these videos he have a character who's named Michel Bojole, who comes when there is a mistake with the rules, or the referee, and when he see the crowd chanting it for him, he cried during the show, live on UA-cam, so you can find it on his vidéo
I hope my english is good 😅
Your English is great. Trust me, I missed a lot.

I appreciate that!
A Wrestlemania in France would be bananas
Funny thing I noticed is that AJ Styles seemed to not really have get that he was cheered when they chant "Il est vraiment phénoménal!", at least that's the impression I got during the kickoff.
Also don't sell yourself short dear american firends. We went all out cause obviously we are very glad to finally have WWE more implied with fans all around the world so that's our way to thank every wrestler coming out here. On top of that it's kind of a cultural thing too cause in live events we always had some kind of a big appreciation for interaction with the crowd so since the WWE has ,at its core, a huge need for crowd interaction, we obviously enjoy it like a big dessert even more so if you're a fan of WWE.
Well put! I think AJ was completely aware he was being honored. I think he's just that good that he stayed in character while being showered in praise.
@@ohwrestling I kinda thought that too but there's still sometimes you can see on his face he's kinda like "wait, are they cheering or "mocking" me?" So yah he must've took the safe route and keep character.
@@DereckLunar He's a ...phenomenal...performer to choose the safe route. See what I did there? Dad jokes.
@@ohwrestling Aaaah xD Neat. Anyway even if I'm way off the entertainement wrestling world since my teenage (back when it was making a big come back on french TV thanks to the entry to digital television signal opening new channels), it's pretty cool to see that our firey attitude got well recieved and proved that overseas PLEs are worth it for everyone involved.

I enjoyed all the chants - except for the REPETITIVE simplement deux. When they kick out, sure, chant it once - but over and over with the clapping every time - it got annoying as hell.
It was a lot but you can't deny the energy it brought. I imagine a World Cup game is like that.
10:32 poor choice of words considering how the french treated royalty

Lalalalala!
Honestly you could have some more research because a lot of them weren’t football chant and there were way more special chant done by the crowd especially on Backlash ("C’est pas gentil", "we want Michel",…)
I'll be sure to dig deeper next time.
It's hard for a non speaking french to get access to these inside jokes, we know them because it's our language but a lot of them are really niche. For instance the youtuber Sturry is probably the most well known wrestling youtuber in france but he "only" have around 100k subs
