Great discussion and I believe it will be helpful to a lot of DJs. Even I didn't realize that other DJs worried in the same manner as I do. I always feel like it's poking karma to get too overly inflated, ego-wise. As a single op, s_hit is going to happen and it all falls into our lap to try not to let it happen again.

I have been doing this for over 30 years. Never been asked to scratch . During an interview prior to covid I was told they wanted all EDM and wanted no more than 1.30 transitions like they hear on their favorite dance radio station. That was roughly 5 hours of dance music. So it would have been north of 200 plus songs. I explained that what you heat on the radio is either preprogrammed with hours of prep or is done in short stints. They also wanted an open request format . Needless to say I wished them well and declined the job. I know I could have probably done this and have done a decent job but the amount of pre prep and planning they would not have the budget to cover the work required. I suggested a younger edm dj I know. He took the job and later told me a big mistake he made taking it.

I had a wedding a few weeks ago and they wanted a lot of heavy metal songs and sent me a MUST PLAY playlist, I did advise them beforehand that not everyone is going to like this, especially at a wedding event. The wedding finished at 10:30pm which was planned to finish at 12 midnight because loads of guest left early. I don't blame myself as I did warn them.

Been there done that, try not to let it get to you. You can't go back and change it but you can use that story to tell your next client.

I've been a DJ for 32 years, I've only had 1 person ask me if I can scratch or beat mix. He was another guy just getting into the DJ business.

Hey Brian, just wanted to give you a shoutout for the awesome content you've been putting out! I recently noticed that Hollywood DJ is sponsoring your videos, which is super cool. I actually shop there too and mentioned to Allan, (who is a good friend), that you mentioned him in one of your videos. Small world, Keep up the great work and looking forward to seeing more from you!"

Honestly, I have never been dissapointed if a DJ does not scratch at an event. However, I have lost track of how many times a DJ starts to scratch and everyone turns around and just raise their eyebrows in unison. Brian great content as usual, I go through withdrawals when you skip a week.

As always, great stuff Brian. Thank you for doing what you do. Us down to earth guys don’t generally put ourselves out there like you have been, especially so consistently. It helps me greatly to see a guy like me have success in a business like this. You keep my hopes up. 👊🏼😎

I was one who said impostor syndrome. For me, it comes out when I think about what I'm doing. Lots of the things I do feel simple, feel easy...and because of that I think that, sometimes, anyone could do it. That there's nothing that sets me apart from anyone else. I know this isn't true, but it's an intrusive thought that creeps in. Most of this is with MC work, as my mixing/mashing/scratching and other DJ skills are still a work in progress (and forever will be). I've been doing this for nearly 10 years at a high professional level, but despite praise I still question what I do, question my legitimacy, and question my value.
Thankfully these intrusive thoughts don't last long, but they do creep in.

You're reading my personality with this video. I hate the thought of being judged negatively by other DJ's or anybody to be truthful. It's a struggle. Also, I can talk to anyone and adapt to any topic of conversation one-on-one or in small groups because I'm a good listener and am genuinely interested in people and subjects I'm not familiar with but I don't like my voice nor do I have the gift of gab on the mic when dj'ing. I never feel like I sound comfortable. I might step on my words or not say the ideal word and that always bums me out. This will inevitably bring me back full circle to fear of being judged negatively.

Great advice will be watching this video over and over as a reminder to myself to work on my weaknesses and not be so hard on myself 🤙🏼

Robbie Williams the singer suffers with imposter syndrome really bad, he said that when he comes off stage he has a break down and cries loads.

A couple years back I did a wedding and seated right in front of me, facing me, was jazzy Jeff. I learned that day that I am not a dj! Instead, I play music at weddings. I'm ok with this!
