  • MusicNomad and Geoff Luttrell team up like no other GIBSON LES PAUL setup video, with easy to follow step-by-step instructions using MusicNomad's Precision Gauges and Tools and the KEEP IT SIMPLE, SETUP (KISS)™ method. To learn more about the the setup tool sets used in this video and how to setup your own guitar visit MusicNomad's Setup Hub: www.musicnomadcare.com/How-To...
    Since 2001, Geoff Luttrell Master Guitar Tech of SF Guitarworks and Sonoma County Guitarworks sfguitarworks.com/ has setup thousands of guitars and also teaches countless guitar players how to setup their own guitars in his setup workshops. He does an incredible job, like no other, of breaking down each setup task explaining in layman’s terms why your guitar will play and sound better by performing each setup task and then leads you through each step, giving helpful tips and tricks along the way. Using MusicNomad’s Precision Gauges and Tools, the setup process becomes so simple to perform as you will see for yourself. Follow along with your own guitar and you will be amazed that yes you can setup your own electric guitar. Not only is it fun, but a properly setup guitar takes your playing and sound to a whole new level.
    Keep in mind, that the steps he goes through in the exact order can be applied to any electric guitar with a fixed radius bridge. If you have individually adjustable saddles there is a slight change in the order you perform switching the steps 2 and 3 (doing the string action followed by the string radius in individually adjustable saddles). We have a video that shows how to setup an electric guitar with individually adjustable saddles also.
    Check out MusicNomad's setup hub for lots of how to videos, setup tools and info on the KEEP IT SIMPLE, SETUP (KISS)™.

      What about the Stopbar tailpiece height?

    • @MusicNomadCare
      @MusicNomadCare  2 роки тому +3

      The basic rule for a tail piece on a fixed radius bridge is that the strings do not touch the back of the bridge as they ramp down to the tail piece. You should have a slight clearance on each string off the back of the bridge.

      @@MusicNomadCare Apologies. I neglected to mention that this guitar does not have a stop bar, but a trapeze system of strings support. This is a factory built guitar with no modifications. One thing I did not check to see is if the trapeze mechanism that holds the strings has a radius that corresponds to the neck. Like a stop bar might.

    This is the best tutorial I've seen about how to setup a Les Paul type guitar. Everything is precisely explained and detailed. It finally makes sense. I've ordered the MusicNomad kit and can't wait to tweak my guitar. I know I've messed it up completely as I had no idea what I was doing tweaking the truss rod, the bridge or the saddles. I know for sure the intonation isn't right for instance. Thank you so much for this tutorial.

I did not know that, if the guitar tuner has trouble holding a note, to back off on the tone control to attenuate the higher frequencies that maybe interfering with the reading. A little drift is okay. Your demonstration of nut filing was very clear, concise, and gave me great confidence to examine and work on the nuts on my own instruments. Thank you.

    Make sure on a Les Paul style guitar that the strings are not touching the edge of the bridge on the back side toward the tailpiece. I believe that detail may have been overlooked.

    • @sfcmp7005

      This is very true. For those not aware, the tailpiece ahould be adjusted the same way the bridge is adjusted to avoid this. Some like the break angle sharper than others, but as this gentleman mentioned, be sure to check.

      Friend I was to understand that all the screws in the saddle are supposed to point to the rear. And the angled part of the saddle should be on the backside too. Now I hear this man say " if your saddle is turned the other way." and I have seen guys claim the heavy string saddles should angle towards the neck. 3 angled one way and 3 the other ? I only have 1 Les Paul and it is set up like the one in this video and from what I see on the Gibson channel show them like this guys. Do you have any saddles and bridges turned around on yours ? This just baffles and bugs me. Gotta know LOL

      @@jerrypeevey I think this is what you are asking. My Gibson 60s came with an ABR-1 bridge (in studs) which means the screws are facing the headstock. The Nashville (wider bridge) has the screws facing the stop bar tail. If yours is an ABR it will say so on the underside. My low E and A strings the slope of the saddles face the headstock and the 4 higher strings (D, G, B, E) slopes are facing the tail piece. It came from factory this way. I hope this helps.

    Hell yeah! I just followed this guide mostly step by step on my '95 Les Paul studio. I did not check the radius as I dont have the tool, nor did I do any nut work. As for everything else, I must say my Les Paul plays and sounds fantastic. One little thing I noticed was when checking for Neck relief at the 6th fret, even with the truss backed off ALL the way, I could only get a .005" feeler in there. Nevertheless as previously mentioned the guitar plays and sounds great! intonation is actually very solid, there was hardly any difference between the 12th fretted note and 17th fretted note on any of the strings. Oh and I should mention I strung the guitar with diaddrio 10-52 light top / heavy bottom strings for D standard tuning. Awesome guide. Cheers from Vancouver!

    Thank you guys so much for doing this! Did my own setup now thanks to your tutorials, and for the first time in a while i'm enjoying my guitar again.
    I took my guitar to get setup at a shop and after a few days back at home it got some nasty buzzing in the middle. It's because i dont have central heat and ac so the rooms im not in at night (one of which has my guitar) has a wide temp change.. stays between 60-80 degrees daily. So i had to adjust the neck relief to reflect that. Doesn't sound buzzy anymore and I have a bridge height that I PREFER, not what the manufacturer or guitar tech puts there for you! I think everyone needs to learn how to setup their own guitars because your preferences come first and it's not easy for the guitar techs to decipher absolutely everything that you want in the short time that you're in their shop.

    • @MusicNomadCare
      @MusicNomadCare  2 роки тому

      You are correct he is checking at the 19th, we recommend to check intonation at the 12th & 17th but if you play high on the neck you can also check at the 19th fret, it is really a minor difference. Thus, either 12th and 17th or 12th and 19th will work to dial in your intonation.

      Soul, you are splitting hairs on 15th vs 12th and both can work. We realize there are different opinions and respect that but in our collaboration with Master Guitar Tech Geoff Luttrell and other top guitar techs, we developed 12th fret as the most common to fret across all guitar brands. Our Keep It Simple, Setup you don't change depending on the guitar brand but always will do the 1st and 12th for fretting during your truss rod adjustment. This is the main area you live in when playing and will make your play and sound great. Keep in mind even the factory settings from big Guitar brands are set way high and not what you really want and experienced guitar techs know that what brands say to do and how techs will setup guitars are way different and sound the best.

    • @MusicNomadCare
      @MusicNomadCare  2 роки тому +4

      The basic rule for a tail piece on a fixed radius bridge is that the strings do not touch the back of the bridge as they ramp down to the tail piece. You should a have slight clearance on each string off the back of the bridge.

    Had my guitar without strings for two weeks . When I put on the new ones(same gauge ) I had serious buzzing issues(not amp) . With correct fix of truss rod and bridge can you realistically achieve total elimination of that buzz and make your guitar as before?

    • @MusicNomadCare
      @MusicNomadCare  3 роки тому +1

      With the strings off for that period of time your neck will not have the proper relief when you put the strings back on. We recommend you restring your guitar with the same gauge string set, you need leave your string on and in tune for a period of time to let your neck go back into its previous relief. You should go through the KISS method after your strings have have been on for a period of time to make sure you have the proper neck relief. for more specific details and clarifications email us at tech@musicnomad.com

    Hello! Before filing down bridge saddles, does the bridge need to be level?

    • @MusicNomadCare
      @MusicNomadCare  3 місяці тому

      You need to perform the full Kiss setup in the proper flow. The bridge saddle heights would be adjusted for string action and radius. You do not level them, they should already have a stock radius and action height that may not be fully correct but closer to what you are trying to achieve.

    • @MusicNomadCare
      @MusicNomadCare  2 роки тому

      You can use the pick capo or your finger to achieve the same result of pushing down on the first fret. The pick capo is designed so you do not need to use your finger to hold down the string. Either way gives you the same result.

    • @MusicNomadCare
      @MusicNomadCare  Рік тому

      The pick capo allows you to hold the string down on top of the 1st fret with just enough tension and is easy to slip in without worrying about where it sits on the fret and how much tension is on it. Yes, you can use a regular capo but you need to make sure it is holding down the string directly on top of the 1st fret using the least amount of tension otherwise you will get an inaccurate reading.

    When adjusting the radius with a radius gauge, what would one be supposed to use with a compound radius?

    • @MusicNomadCare
      @MusicNomadCare  Рік тому

      With your strings off, you will still measure the fretboard radius at the last fret. You will then match your string radius to the fretboard radius. For example if you have a 9.5" to 12" compound radius you will want to use the larger number which is the flattest part of the radius.

  • @MrLouo

    Just curious why you measure the string action with the capo on the first fret. Wouldn’t that make it lower to start with

    • @MusicNomadCare
      @MusicNomadCare  Рік тому +2

      The KISS method is a linear process. In the flow, string height comes before nut height. The measurements we have are based on using the pick capo at the first fret. Since the nut has not been addressed yet you would be using a height reference point that could be off. The first fret is a fixed height to adjust from.
