Airlock warning! Good video thank you, I've been putting off cleaning my fx6 impeller (it was making a popping noise as if jamming). Followed your instructions and it was an easy job to remove and clean. However, when I turned on the fx6 it made a horrible noise, initially I thought I had reassembled it incorrectly so took it apart and reassembled it. Couldn't see a problem but when i turned it on the spluttering noise started again. I clean my fx6 every 3 months and never had Airlock problems so assumed it wasn't an Airlock, but the noise suggested it was. I checked pipes and filter to ensure no air. Confused I let it run whilst I gave it further thought.... and then I heard the air release and the filter ran quietly and smoothly. The point of this comment is that the Airlock must have been it the impeller chamber because I've never had an issue when just doing a normal clean.
I was gifted a 75 pound tank with five cichlids. I’m a fish newbie and I was so intimidated when I saw the FX6 hahaha, but after watching this video and the other one where you completely disassemble the canister, I’m confident and excited to get going on cleaning this! Your videos are my fave so far for learning how to take care of the new additions to my family, thank you so much!!

Once again Kaveman has come to my rescue!! My fluval fx6 was making a funny noise. It would run quietly then sporadically make a loud surging noise. As if it was collecting water then pushing it out. Sort of hard to explain. But it was annoying and scaring my fish. I watched this video, cleaned my impeller and so far the surging push noise has ceased. P.s. I still watch the cleaning fx6 video to make sure I’m turning knobs in correct order when I clean the filter.

Great video Kev... now I know how to clean my FX6 impeller correctly. My UA-cam search was inspired by a Jar Head that had his FX6 stop running because of a dirty impeller. 🤔
Closing the valves traps the syphon in the hoses. So that when you re attach them and start the FX6 again its already primed and ready. And thanks for your service as well!

I noticed my flow rate has slowed a lot, maybe I should clean this, it’s been 3 years. 😳 Also is there a gasket or o ring when attaching the impeller housing back on?
Yes there is, make sure it goes back on. The impeller wouldnt normally cause a decrease in flow rate. Usually its clogged up sponges and/or media. But cleaning the impeller wouldnt hurt and can only help 😊
Have you had a situation where you put motor back on and the filter won’t run . I’ve had to pull it apart 6 times and screw back to get it going why I have no idea.
Hasn't happened to me yet (knock on wood lol) Maybe your impeller just wasn't seated properly? or it could mean there's damage on it that you don't see.
My husband took out the impeller on the fly QL fx5 and gave the whole filter a deep and thorough clean . He put back everything but when we plugged it in, it’s not working. Do you have any any ideas why? Please help. Thanks
Yes it does. Sometimes something can get lodged in there and cause it to stay stuck. Most likely a safety feature to prevent damage. Opening it up and cleaning it out again usually solves the problem. 👍

I proceeded to clean impeller following your steps left it clean and plugged it back in and was on for 2 minutes and shut off again. Do you think it might be the motor?
No, it’s designed to turn off and purge after a few minutes and will do that daily. When it turns off leave it plugged in, wait about 1-2 minutes and it’ll kick back on. 😁

hi kev I just got through watching your video how to clean FX 6 Motorhead I have a question I have a Samsung 404 canister every time I put the pre-filter sponge on the intake I have little particles floating around the sponge is claim but I still have particles floating know if I take the sponge off the intake my water is crystal clear like I said every time I put the wires back on and it is clean I still get particles floating around how do I fix that I am kind of worried that sand will get in the suck up into the filter that's one of the main reason why this phone's is on ther somewhat
I dont use pre-filters for that reason. I feel every time you take it off to clean it you will release dirt back into the water. Sand is going to go through those prefilters anyway. Just leave it off if your water is clearer without it and raise your intakes higher so it wont suck up any sand.
And that's wit per filter or not it's still going happen anyways you know I think that's wy my nitrites is high because peashooter is slowing down my water flow I do see a lot poop an unate food that's not really getting sucked it might be the pre-filter what do you think

But yuh I thought of that today
hi kev I just got through watching your video how to clean FX 6 Motorhead I have a question I have a Samsung 404 canister every time I put the pre-filter sponge on the intake I have little particles floating around the sponge is claim but I still have particles floating know if I take the sponge off the intake my water is crystal clear like I said every time I put the wires back on and it is clean I still get particles floating around how do I fix that I am kind of worried that sand will get in the suck up into the filter that's one of the main reason why this phone's is on ther somewhat
I dont use pre-filters for that reason. I feel every time you take it off to clean it you will release dirt back into the water. Sand is going to go through those prefilters anyway. Just leave it off if your water is clearer without it and raise your intakes higher so it wont suck up any sand.
@@KaveManAquatics yah I do get Lill Sand in my filter wit the pre-filter so you said you don't use them do get sand in ur as well
Yea I do get some sand in there. It's going to happen when you have sand substrate.
And that's wit per filter or not it's still going happen anyways you know I think that's wy my nitrites is high because peashooter is slowing down my water flow I do see a lot poop an unate food that's not really getting sucked it might be the pre-filter what do you think
Possible, do you have a wavemaker installed? - ua-cam.com/video/O36QbOiZJvw/v-deo.html
