      Hi Lisa. I am also having trouble with micro bubbles. I have inspected, cleaned and lubricated all the o rings. I have cut the hoses shorter for fresh ends into the in/out. Checked the impeller.. Still micro bubbles. Did you replace the in/out hoses or the valves on the top of the pump?

    I’ll probably have to do this for my fx4. I noticed maybe a month or two ago the water wasn’t running anymore. I haven’t cleaned the filter in a while so I did that but I had no idea about motor maintenance. This helped a lot and I’ll have to buy a spare impeller.

    I have the Fx5. It was used when i purchased it, never maintananced until today which is little over a year because it started making noise. I unscrewed the motor, rinsed everything out with the waterhose, no brush needed. Put it back together, noise gone🤷‍♂️ No rebuild kit needed if nothing is damaged

    Would a small leak under the motor housing be due to the motor housing O-ring or the little O-ring and bushing used within the impeller kit..?

    • @fluval
      @fluval  6 років тому

      Most likely due to the motor housing O ring. Perhaps it was misaligned after reassembly post maintenance.

    • @worldwolf9909
      @worldwolf9909 6 років тому

      Fluval Aquatics I noticed that it really started dripping when I shut off the outake valve.. Anyway I replaced the O-ring on the same day as my original comment and no problems since. Hopefully future models will have a much bigger and better seal system that can hold up and handle a lot more pressure.

    So I have a question?
    Me and my gf have a 125 gallon and a fx6 filter on it. She's had the filter now for a little over 4 years, well a few days ago, it started to make weird noises and then just today my gf messaged me and said that it stopped running completely.
    We drained it, I took out the motor and cleaned it, put the motor back properly, refilled the filter, and now it won't start.
    We are thinking of replacing the motor entirely, but I'd like input from the professionals before we make that decision.

    Nice video as always. I have never done this. Is this a routine thing that needs to be done every year or so, or only if it stops working or is makes noise? I am very nervous about this as I can see 15 different things that can go wrong when I do this lol!

    • @fluval
      @fluval  2 роки тому

      Don't be nervous, it's very straightforward! We recommend checking and cleaning the impeller assembly every 3 months - as the only moving piece in the filter, keeping it clean will guarantee the best filtration efficiency! Yearly replacement of the impeller assembly is recommended since the impeller spins 24/7 and does wear over time.

    My fx4 motor housing unit gets really hot when running . . . Is this normal or do I have a problem

    • @fluval
      @fluval  Рік тому

      It's normal for FX motors to become warm to the touch! This is actually a design choice - as a result of the pump being outside the canister, the heat it generates is not transferred to the aquarium water, helping to keep your fish safe and healthy. 👌
      If the motor feels unusually hot, try giving the impeller, impeller shaft and impeller well a thorough cleaning.

      @fluval  11 місяців тому

    Oops I meant to oranda goldfish they are both about 6 inches booth fx6s on the 125 get cleaned on a regular basis all pads have been changed and I'm waiting for my intake and outtake new valves to come in the ones that clip into the filter cuz the outtake Vale is dripping but when I turn the flow down on it it stops also I noticed that the microbubbles stopped when I turn the Val down on the out take tube where it was leaking so maybe it's that. I'm hoping it's that the other fx6s running fine and I got them at the same time I had an Oscar in that tank at one time that's why there's two fx6s on there as I rehomed the Oscar I ended up putting my goldfish in there just too I will be adding two more but they are in a hospital tank right now for a few weeks before I add them

      @@fluval I've ordered a fluval impeller kit already. I'm going to try that first, and if it's the motor itself that's failing and the impeller doesn't fix the issue I also ordered an aftermarket motor that fits as a replacement. I'm hoping it's just the impeller and I can return the motor, but this filter has had disappointing flow since day 1 so I wouldn't be surprised if the motor failed. Even when clean and brand new I was only getting about 450gph, with no additional media and only 2ft head height. The impeller didn't appear to have any damage or bending, but I will try a new one with a new bushing to see how that does. Thanks for the feedback.

    • @AdkAqua
      @AdkAqua Рік тому

      @@fluval it was the motor itself. The impeller rotates flawlessly in my Chinese knockoff motor that just showed up. Not sure what is failing in my OEM FX6 motor, but it doesn't spin the impeller anymore. For as much as these cost, they oughta last more than 2 years. This one has been disappointing since it came out of the box. I guess a bad motor would explain why.

    Sorry to bother you again, just wanting to double check the flow direction in the FX5 please.
    Should I place mechanical media in the bottom tray, then my bio media in the above 2 trays please?
    Or bio media in the bottom 2 trays and mechanical media in the top tray please?
    Sorry, I haven’t had any luck with finding out solid info.
    Also wondering if there’s an online user manual available please?
    Thank you once again for any feedback you can provide 😊

    • @fluval
      @fluval  2 роки тому +1

      The flow through FX filters is as follows: the water first moves to the bottom of the canister, and then rises to the top through the foam pads. It then passes back to the bottom of the canister through the media trays in the middle, before finally being returned to the aquarium.
      So, you'll want your mechanical filter media on the top tray, and your biological filter media on the bottom 2 trays.
      You can find the user manual and answers to questions like this here (link is for FX6, but functionally it's the same as the FX5): fluvalaquatics.com/us/product/fx6-high-performance-canister-filter/

      Hi there, we are sorry to hear that you are having some trouble with your filter. Our first suggestion would be to refer to page 7 of the products user manual to ensure that the filter is within the constraints provided in our diagram. The distance from the top of your filter to the waterline in the aquarium should be within 20cm to 150cm and the distance from the water line to the peak of the tubing (top of the aquarium rim) should be no more than 20cm. If your filter is placed within these constraints and is still giving you some trouble, please reach out to our customer service team so that we can investigate this further with you! • @fluval
      @fluval  7 років тому

      Hi Lisa. This all depends on how often the filter is cleaned, what species of fish you keep (some are obviously dirtier than others), the quantity of fish you keep, and the size of your tank. It's also possible the foam blocks have aged and are perhaps collapsing, especially if a regimented maintenance schedule hasn't been maintained. A Severely clogged filter can be the reason too, in which case you would want to look at replacing the intake and output valves.

      This is likely due to air in the system and not filling the canisters sufficiently to speed up the process as well as allowing greater than necessary air to remain in the large amount of sponge that these filters come with. You should see notable improvement by end of day.

      We do not however due to the water flow in the FX filter series it must flow through the surrounding foam filter inserts first and is then directed to the top media basket within which you can place a fine filtration pad, sand should not pose any risk to the impeller.

    Can you tell me why my fx6 canister is now building up with air. Has been perfect for 18 months or more. Until I changed my tank and now every time it primes it’s releasing quite a lot of air. Intake pipe and the join to the down pipe is totally submerged so can’t be sucking air in there. Is it possible there is a very small hole in that pipe or could air be sucked in from where the pipe pushing onto the canister. If I can not get it sorted I will be trying another filter. As it’s scares the fish every time it does it

    • @fluval
      @fluval  5 років тому

      After maintaining and priming your filter it can expel air due to the air initially present in filter media, are there any air stones operating near the inlet siphon? Is this a marine or freshwater aquarium?

    • @danielbell1691
      @danielbell1691 5 років тому

      It’s still doing it now. no it’s not from trapped air in the sponges. I’d say it’s about half a pint to a full pint of air it releases every time it prims. It is a fresh water tank and there is no air stone or anything else to make bubbles. The joint for the inlet pipe and down pipe are fully submerged under water so can’t be sucking in there. I’m assuming it’s sucking air in from the inlet from the ball valve where it push fits onto the canister. Motor I’d of thought it would leak water out not suck air in. And the same with the lid. And if it was the outlet pipe then that would certainly leak water. I’ve stripped and cleaned all seals a few times new and makes no difference. What would you recommend my next thing to try. Wether it be replacing parts or something else. Many thanks for replying.

      Tommy, on any O ring in that filter that lubricant is recommended. We are not sure of what you are referring to when you say "excess valve". The filter hosing supplied is ribbed and specific to the filter, splicing in additional plumbing is not recommended. To drain you use a dedicated submersible pump and appropriate hosing long enough to reach to where a suitable drain is located.

I pointed this out to the PetSmart workers and they told me it was a new unit. I took their word for it and took it home. It sat in the box at home for a week then on the second week I installed it. I did not bother to take a close look at it when I installed it because I really thought it was a legit new unit I got. Now it's a week later and it started to malfunction as well and I decided to inspect it. Upon inspecting it I came to realize that my unit had scuffed legs that were missing the small circular pads on the bottom and the legs also look like they have been drug on a rough surface like concrete. The bottom of the motor housing also looked like it got scraped on concrete as the bottom edge and corner looked scuffed. Outside of the fx6 bucket also had some wear marks on it. I know for a damn fact that I did not cause this damage because I never took my filter outside and my living room where my tank is at is smooth hardwood floor and the restroom where I take the unit for maintenance has polished tile and my tub has a padded mat where I cleaned the unit. The location under my tank where I put my unit also has a padded rubber mat on the bottom so because of all this I know for sure this unit was sold to me damaged like this.
      But anyways man it just sucks that a retail store would do their customers like this by selling them a well known brand item that is used. Makes me wonder if all discounted units they sell are used.

      I recently bought a used FX6 for $200 and it does the same thing - there is a swooshing noise from within the canister, and a pulsating of the output hose. It’s like the canister gets going, than gets weak than it gets going, then it gets weak, right? Im Glad to know I’m not alone, lol. You’re the first one that I came across on the internet that has described what mine is doing exactly. Did you find out what’s cause it? I’d sure love to know. What was your solution? Please keep me informed. Laterz. I guess there was a reason why the guy was getting rid of it. Worst case scenario, I just buy a new one off of Amazon.

      I had the exact same thing happened with mine the pulsing was banging off the glass and drove me nuts so I returned it to Petsmart got another one a year ago and it’s been working great. I was told that it was an air lock I did everything I could think of to get air out but could never get it to stop.

      @@1dilligaf I actually ended up returning that FX6 and trip out on this. Pet smart sold me a used one. Them a holes though they can get away with it. When I returned it the second one I got was packaged way differently. This second one has been working amazingly since day one. You really have to watch out when buying stuff from PetSmart. This is the 3rd time they sell me something used

    Hi there, I’ve recently purchased two FX5’s both second hand, and by the sounds of it, they’ve both been sitting unused for a couple of years or more.
    Is there a specific maintenance check I should do before attempting to setup and start the filters please?
    Or would it be ok for me to inspect the motor and give it all a clean as shown in this video please?
    Ps also just wondering how many LPH the FX5’s are rated at filtering please?
    And what size aquarium you recommend to be suitable for adequate filtration for the FX5 for an aquarium with American Cichlids please (just thought I’d be specific as my fish make a above average mess lol)

    • @fluval
      @fluval  2 роки тому +1

      Hi there! We suggest you give the filters a once-over and clean them as thoroughly as possible. If they're making some noise, it's likely the pump needs a pretty good cleaning. The pump output of the FX5 is 3,500 LPH and the filter circulation rate is 2,300 LPH. A single FX5 is rated for up to 1,500 L - in your case, since you'll be keeping larger, messier fish, their capacity will be reduced. We run two FX6 filters on a 300 gallon aquarium with large South American cichlids, and the water is crystal clear and the parameters are perfect!

    My Fluval Fx6 just started leaking... Only when I turn it off during water changes. I opened up the motor and it turns out that my Bushing + O-ring is missing.. that is so strange -_-

    • @fluval
      @fluval  7 років тому

      That is strange that with a missing O ring the leak only happens when the motor is turned off. We strongly advise you get both the o ring and impeller bushing before operating your filter.

    • @SuperHerbking
      @SuperHerbking 7 років тому

      Ordered a new impeller + Bushing and o-ring Kit and installed it just now. Turns out I do have a bushing + O-ring, it was so dirty that I couldnt see it. I removed it with the metal tool provided and installed the new impeller, bushing and o-ring. The water leak is still happening. I think I might have to replace the OTHER o-ring, although it sits onto of the ridges as mentioned in the video.

    • @SuperHerbking
      @SuperHerbking 7 років тому

      If that doesnt work, I dont know what I'm gonna do. Are there any possible culprits to this leak? I'm really not trying to buy a brand new motor if the solution is something simple that I might have look passed.

    • @SuperHerbking

      sorry, one more question. Are the fluval fx5 and the fluval fx6 motor seal rings identical?

    • @fluval
      @fluval  7 років тому

      Positioning the O ring properly is all that should be necessary, a new motor is not required in this instance.

      Kevin, please check your filter media and ensure it is clean that there are no obstructions in any of the media baskets. A thorough hose flush is recommended twice a year. You should also remove the pump and check the impeller. The magnetic impeller is a wearable item and after 3 years it would not be unusual to replace it.
