  • Much love everyone! Excited to bring a new reaction to "Taylor Swift".
Today we have Taylor Swift - my tears ricochet (folklore: long pond studio sessions) reaction. I felt her disappointment through ever word.
When I hear Taylor singing it's almost as if I was there! Taylor Swift is truly an amazing songwriter/artist and this song is just one more to prove that!

The jewels she gave him were her albums that went gold, platinum, and diamond.

She really cared about Scott Borchetta and was the first artist to sign to his brand-new label when she was 15. She always asked about owning her masters and he kept putting her off. After her 10-year contract was up, she again asked about buying her masters and Scott refused to sell them to her, but told her she could earn one back for each new album she made with him. She walked, as she wanted more creative control and didn't want to be stuck in another 10-year contract just to "earn" back her work. Then, he sold her masters without giving her a chance to counter offer, and sold them to someone he knew she disliked and had been bullied by for years. So, she is rerecording her masters and her fans are behind her versions and trying to devalue her old work so she owns her life's work and her nemesis loses on his gamble.

I 100% agree she's the best songwriter of our generation, and this song is (to me) in the top 3 of best songs she's ever written. The line "I can go anywhere I want, just not home" is one of the most heartbreaking lines I have ever heard. Not only did she lose her masters but she was betrayed by someone who was like family to her.

This performance is cathartic. Everyone in the world can relate to someone taking advantage of your trust. Especially people pleasers. You have to unlearn being a doormat in order to survive. May Scooter and Scott have a no good terrible day forever and ever amen🙏

I'm glad you had some background information going in, most people think it's about a romantic relationship without it. She said it could also relate to what a divorced couple goes through but it hits even harder knowing her story.

There's nothing I love more than watching someone connect personally to a song & really *feel* it. You felt it. I appreciate the time you take to break down the lyrics. It's almost like being in one of the college courses that teach her songwriting/poetry. I love the details about your nature walks -- I do the same thing!
The Long Pond studio actually belongs to Aaron Dessner (the man on the guitar) - it's where he records with his bands, The National and Big Red Machine. It's in upstate NY - it looks like the most beautiful and peaceful place!

What I am appreciating so much about your reactions that almost no other reactors does is that you listen through the entire song first before you react.
The song should be a whole experience for the first time. We ALWAYS read poems though aloud the first time before we analysed them at school. The rhythm, texture, tone, tembre, lyrics, instrumentals, etc., are such an integral part of the song and I have found that so many reactors miss so much because they stop or talk over the song.
Really enjoying your analysis and experiences so much 😊

So sad! Great reaction! Sorry you been there too. She tried to make a deal with Borchetta and Braun...she did not want to leave on bad terms, but she is smart and I am glad she took Kelly Clarkson's advice and re-record, but at the end of the day, her original masters is her life's work. People go after her and judge because of privileges she has had, but she did work very hard to get where she is. Thank you for breaking down the lyrics!!

I don’t know if anyone else has said it but the chorus is bits from her stolen albums.
“I don’t have it in myself to go with grace” - State of Grace from Red
“You’re the hero flying around” - Superman from Speak Now
“If I’m dead to you why are you at the wake?” - Look What you Made Me Do from reputation
“Cursing my name” - The Way I Loved You from Fearless
    “Wishing I’d stay”
Could be from Wish you Would or All You Had to Do Was Stay from 1989
And finally, “tears ricochet” - Teardrops on My Guitar from her Debut Album

I fully, fully agree with you that Taylor stands alongside a few other of the best songwriters of our generation. I'm an '86 baby, so I'm a millennial too.
I place her alongside only a small number of other singer/songwriters. Florence Welch from Florence and the Machine is probably my favourite just just juuuust ahead of Taylor. I think you'd LOVE their music too. Also cool to note that Taylor inspired Florence to write more intimately about herself in her lyrics.
I also rate Hozier and Ed Sheeran very, very highly as singer/songwriters.

I love that the true meaning behind Taylor’s writing this song is out there. But I really love that it can speak about any betrayal. When I first heard the album I heard a story of divorce. I imagined the couple in a sunlit lawyers office, hashing through the details of a split. They’ve given each other stones in the form of rings but now they're throwing them at each other. He’s trying to bury her metaphorically, maybe financially. Then tears and the pain are just flying around hitting each other. It’s so smart and powerful however you want to interpret it. Love your videos! ❤️

It’s great to have a little info regarding the meaning of the lyrics. Every song you listen to off of Folklore, you can watch her discuss the song with Jack and/or Aaron. If you want to include the discussion in your reaction, it will be well received! You’ll love these little conversations. Showcases her brilliance. And Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner have been with her awhile and are geniuses as well!

10:35- yes. She has another song (Bejeweled) where she references the same type of situation to a different person. She says, “I think I’ve been a little too kind. Didn’t notice you walking all over my peace of mind, in the shoes I gave you as a present.” 🎉😂 She’s savage with her penmanship!

The word ricochet gives me the image of bullets fired. It also makes me think of how even if it doesn't hit it's mark & grazes- it still stings. I think the song also relates to other relationships- not just platonic or romantic.
This song also made me think of Your Losing Me- "sunlit room" and "Remember lookin' at this room, we loved it 'cause of the light/Now, I just sit in the dark and wonder if it's time". Disappointments that aren't dealt with and end of dying.. wasted.

What I can never tell my family is that I see myself as the betrayer sometimes and at other times, I see my youngest nephew. He ignored everything his father, grandfather, I (especially me) told him about drugs. He almost killed me with a knife when he was having a meltdown. He couldn't face his failure in our eyes because he never listened to us about his work. He forgot that we're first his safety net. That day.... I saw it in his eyes. He was actually going to attempt to kill me. He knows that I'm dying from an autoimmune disease that is giving me cirrhosis. The only thing that made him stop was that. Then my family ignored everything I said for the next year as he fell into severe addiction. We don't know where he is now.
