      Stan was in his early to mid 40s when he did this. The 50s were hard on him and the industry, and he was thinking of quitting in very early 60s. But a chance to write a superhero book and some inspiring advice from his lovely wife restored his youthful demeanor.

  • @JohnSmith-gu3ub
    @JohnSmith-gu3ub 3 роки тому +86

    I'm like "Where is Stan Lee?" and then I skipped ahead in the video until I realize.... that IS Stan Lee. I'm now in the shower, curled up in a ball, questioning my reality.

    • @benharbak

    • @Hibernicus1968
      @Hibernicus1968 3 роки тому +7

      No mystery involved. It's just Stan Lee before he grew his signature mustache, and before he started wearing a toupee, which he did throughout the seventies. Eventually, he got hair plugs, and was able to ditch the rug, but it left him with the very distinctive assymetrical hairline he had in his later years.

    • @JohnSmith-gu3ub
      @JohnSmith-gu3ub 3 роки тому

      @@benharbak If those where his first words, why would it matter how far I skipped ahead? Missing things is what tends to happen when they are skipped.

    • @benharbak
      @benharbak 3 роки тому +8

      @@JohnSmith-gu3ub Okay...but why would you feel the need to skip ahead through a video that's a minute and 20 seconds long? You didn't even have the patience to see what happens literally 2 seconds into the video. I'm starting to see why some things are taken out of context or why people miss so much these days.

    Stan Lee was killed in 1967. He was replaced by Marvel with an imposter, coincidentally named Stanley Lieber. This is the real reason he stopped writing Marvels, not because "Jack Kirby really wrote them," as Jack Kirby claimed. If you listen to the Merry Marvel Marching Society song backwards, Steve Ditko can be heard whispering, "Give me back my art, dead man," proving he knew Lee had been killed in a traffic accident.

    The statistics he's citing are a bit off, not very surprisingly for a pitch for both the comics business and Marvel's role in it. Marvel's unit sales didn't triple over any three-year period in the 1960s, but they had nearly doubled and absolutely were growing. Marvel was by no means #1 yet, though: that'd happen around 1973. In the 1960s, DC had MANY more series; Marvel wasn't contractually allowed to expand its line. (DC's owner also owned Marvel's distributor!)
    Comics were definitely not "bigger than ever" as a business in the 1960s - overall circulations were falling - but you're not going to hear that in a pitch like this. And comics' cultural footprint was certainly growing, with fandom on the rise and the aftermarket developing.

      Based on when the show aired and seeing that Silver Surfer in the background, this would have to be mid 1966.
