Well I must be one of the few that enjoyed this version of a classic song ! I can remember watching this on TV and I can honestly say I loved it as much then as I do now ! Sometimes its cool to be different !
I loved this when it was aired and I still love it now in 2019,two great artists having a bit of fun,Numan is still cool even when he's acting daft, brilliant stuff....
Thanks for posting. I recently found a very old video tape of lots of Numan TV interviews from 1980s and 1990s that I recorded way back then. I am trying hard to salvage whats on it as it is in very poor condition and this show was on it but is badly aged. So glad you have it up in such great condition. I will post as much as I can from that tape over the coming weeks as long as I don't already find them on UA-cam :)
It is a bit cringy, but it's a catchy version dripping with 80s charm and it still makes me smile every time. It's so nice to see Gary having a laugh with Leo together. I love that Gary ends up stripping down to his classic Berserker look at the end ⛔🔺👑
I also remember this at the time & it would have been a really good version had it not been for the fact that Leo Sayer was in it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gary's voice is mesmerizing as always
@shubunkini yes but you realise this is a joke right? at least gary has a sense of humour! and it was the 80's, there is far more cringeworthy things than this from that era too
On Broadway,,,,, Billy curry,,, that synth solo .. and Gary looking into middle distance. 1979. Wonder what Gary has done since then......,? NUMAN GOD OF ELECTRONIC Waiting to see you with Scaparis????? Intersing xxx
Numan's record label forced him to do this, or he would be fired... He said many times he'd never make a cover version, or a thing like THIS I can't stop laughing OMG
At the time, Gary was on his own label "Numa Records." You may be getting confused with the "IRS Records" label, when they made him cover the Prince tracks "1999" and "U Got the Look." Gary actually performed "U Got the Look" on the "Isolate" tour
I looked forward to seeing this all evening when it was on, I think Gary did another track too from Beserker that night, looking back though this is awful now, but as a 15 year old Gary could do no wrong, beginning of ' The Wilderness Years ' for Gary I think. I am guilty of not buying his stuff from 85 until 93. The new Splinter album sounds like the album that should have followed Telekon.
A segment of this clip was used during a programme about the low points in Gary Numan's career. The narrative implied that Gary hated doing this kind of stuff and felt embarrassed and awkward doing it.
I know I recall reading an interview where he said he really hated doing the Prince covers like 1999 and whatever the other one was but he got pushed into doing them...
I am trying to find which program that was exactly, it was on UA-cam but I cannot find it for the life of me... do you happen to know what it is called?
I remember watching this with my late mother and father. I loved him from eleven. X.

And here I am with the legend GARY NUMAN ⬅️
That is BRILLIANT!! Gary displaying his sense of humour...

at the time this kicked ass
Leo sounds amazing!

Totally tubular to the max!

The Clarences
Numan's icey blue head is the best part!
Interesting how Gary had to play a drunk,he doesn,t drink!!!
Making up for it now.
oh be quite its great ha i remember staying up and screaming with excitement. this is only just two yrs after I assasin.
Surely the highlight of Numan's career...
Even my boy Lou Reed did some crap in the 80's.Ever see the video for My Red Joystick? So don't blame Gary!
great love it
This sooo bizarre...
Man this is wild...
1 BROADWAY
My Home
WOW

This is sheer genius from Gary

So this is what he meant by "Sing a chorus of 'On Broadway' and deny it all." I'd want to deny it too.
I'd imagine he cringes when he sees this
I imagine he smiles looking back 🙂
Numan's record label forced him to do this, or he would be fired... He said many times he'd never make a cover version, or a thing like THIS
I can't stop laughing OMG
Z Tetriminos the record version was brilliant tho, I've still got it too!
Gary did a version of this song on his Living Ornaments live album in 79 / 80

Fired from his own label 😂
Utter rubbish. Numan set up Numa records by this point. Beggars were history.
Is there a version with decent audio somewhere?
There was a documentary about him that had a clip of this in it with better audio but I cannot find it, it should be here on UA-cam...

Robert Mcafee same here, 99% of what he did during those yrs was terrible, thankfully came out the other side even better tho
I preferred his wilderness years to the poor man's nine inch nails he's become
He he... poor old Gary Numan regrets ever doing this... bad!

@PatrickIngham21 .. you're right .. :o)
dear god what was he thinking?
Wow,that’s SPECTACULAR. Ly awful!
Tv appearances like this were very damaging for Gary’s career . He should have kept the mystique, the distance from mainstream pop .
Why?
We still don't know.
ouch ! even numan has his less memorable moments hehe
Completely bizarre. The desperation is palpable.
Oh..... Dear ZOD... NO. #PleaseMakeItStop #YouMakeMeFeelLikeCringing
Horrendous.
bollocks
Oh dear me. I LOVE Gary Numan but this is dreadful. Dreadful, dreadful, dreadful ..
