HOW I PLAY: WHEN THE MUSICS OVER (the Doors) Vox Continental & Fender Rhodes Piano Bass Thomas Vogt

  • When the music´s over of the DOORS!
    I played this tune on the 1967 VOX CONTINENTAL & 1968 FENDER RHODES PIANO BASS driven both by the Fender Twin Reverb Amp of 1974. (sorry that´s why the sound is not quite good + the impact of a camera audio record only)
    the BASS lowest E KEY is signed by RAY MANZAREK HIMSELF!
    Note: this is only to show you how you could play this song. It´s not my goal to reproduce as close as can be the original tune of Ray´s playing. I do play like my own mood is. Everytime the song sounds different... Else please comment/check other guys on clips who try to reproduce Ray. Just jamming, keep the spirit alive!
    Attention: Everything I do contains mistakes!!!
    Keep the spirit alive :-)

      At church, they gave up on the organ. Maintenance costs too high. Now they use a piano, guitar, perhaps tambourine.

The way it was done gives us an idea. Or insight as to how Ray Manzarek played this song. You did a superb job of it.

  • @VogtThomas

    basically i "learned" playing music (before doors as well) by listening what the musicians were doing and tried to "recreate". This, for me, was the most effective and the best "results" at all. For sure i "tried" sheet music as well but for me it´s to "stiff" - watching the notes (and their values) - i cant perform with that in realtime within a good result. So i skipped "doors sheet music" as fast as i could because it creates itself by just happening;-) doors songs are never the same...

    is simple, 1 day play only the left hand,the other day play only the right hand and the 3st day play 2 hand together but very slowly...(if is yet difficult play all notes of the bass riff-lick in normal tempo for the left hand but press only 1 or some notes for the right hand per every meter )

    This by far is the best sounding VOX I ever heard, sounds exactly like the Doors. How did he get it to sound so incredible? I heard lots of reverb, what else? what's the model make of this one, some sound different?

    • @VogtThomas
      @VogtThomas  6 років тому +7

      hi peter, the resulting sound of the (any) Vox depends on the amp & speaker setup you are using. the entire organ itslf (dry sound) is to be honest, not that nice. you need a amp which gives you the ability to overdrive a little bit, add some spring reverb and go for it - nothing else. Meanwhile i have the original BOSS amp of Jordan which the doors used early times 67,68... even better then in the video attached Fender twin revern am of the mid 70s. I will take a video with the boss amp very soon... this item sounds really like the doors did! :-) here my post on that one: www.morrisonhotel.de/single-post/2015/05/06/Backstage-with-The-Toxic-Void

    • @peterstanton4283
      @peterstanton4283 6 років тому

      Wow, thanks so much for the reply. My one regret is I never saw the Doors live, but you sure bring it back to life with that sound, it's awesome! btw, do you know how to play Iron Butterfly's "In a Gadda da Vida", they used a similar VOX, right? The intro is easy, but there's this long organ solo (right after the long drum solo) which I tried to figure out, but I can't. Could I make a request for you to play it, please show your hands if you do so I can cheat and copy it, thanks so much :)

    • @peterstanton4283
      @peterstanton4283 6 років тому +1

    i dont remember exactly: one of the first doors tunes i rehearsed were When the musics over and Light my Fire (intro only took me a week): I remember my Mom said, after a while I had to use earphones: you can take them off - its getting on my nerves even you play without :-) How long will you keep trying this? Ah - until i got all the songs ;-) HA! (after a while it got quicker learning because the structure is quite the same)...

I've played in a Doors tribute band since the early 90s and have never been able to get my '67 vox to sound as rich as yours. I'm happy with it but this takes it to another level, more like the sound Ray got out of his in the studio. Gotta be the amp, right?
