      I haven’t re-read the book in a while, but after Season 2 of the Netflix reboot did it’s own spin on this romance, someone mentioned it was heavily implied Prissy’s father had him sacked because of his impropriety and possibly how Avonlea got its first female teacher. What made her anger so fine was the restraint she had compared with kids today....people in general. @@thea6944 Good morning. No need to be sorry. Anne wasn't an "angry" person normally. She had a bit of vanity because of the cruel way she was treated as a child in the orphanage and by cruel people who adopted her then gave her away. The Hammond's.
      Today, people seem ready and waiting to be offended. Angry. Not all people. And there are matters that people must deal with that are upsetting. I was speaking in my post above about what seems like common, every day behavior today.
      Anne had a show of temper at Gilbert because she felt he had insulted her. She didn't recognize the playful and childish flirtiness of his actions.
      Today there is a great pride in many to be ready to tell someone off, verbally beat their listener into the ground and do so with language that is so demeaning. And their over the top, bullying, classless behavior is often applauded. Anne was a lady. A young lady, but a lady. Lady= at one time a high compliment.
      Today=seen as weak, old fashioned.
      Hope this explains what I meant.

    This was probably the most iconic television moment for a kid growing up in Canada in the 80s. Even more iconic than the time Wheels went hitchhiking and got picked up by that gay dude who asked him if he liked to "fool around".
    Wheels was hoping to meet his dad who lived in Port Hope and played in a band, as I recall.
    Anyway, Anne Shirley made redheads badass among Canadians .

    For anyone that's comparing this and other versions of this scene to the book. I have finally figured out what's wrong with all of the scenes. In the book she was lost in her imagination in the movies she was intentionally ignoring him.

    If you can't hit aggravating schoolmates with a slate, the hatred builds up, and erupts 30-odd years later in the form of brief verbal outbursts at your desk; then unsympathetic colleagues go whinging & snitching to the manager. So, one just can't win! (Having said that, I have to agree that an assault on gorgeous Gilbert can't go unpunished; he's more lovable & valuable than many real pupils.)

    I once had a boy compare my curly hair to curly fries. And asked if he could touch them to see if they were crispy,
    I said no of course.

      I read online somewhere that Anne was 25 when she finally married Gilbert. Then as much as she hated him before, she was at least twice as devoted to him. In the books they had I think 7 kids but the first was stillborn. A girl she had named Joy because her heart was full of joy. But then Gilbert told her Joy didn't make it. I remember reading that part about 30 years ago and was SO sad.
