I love these hearings. They uncover a lot. They do nothing though. They're just glorified scolding sessions. Nothing changes. No one's really held accountable for the disgusting amounts of mishandled and misappropriated money. No one goes to jail. No one gets ejected from their job.

In order for any board member to be fired, there must be a vote in which all board members, as well as major shareholders have to participate. Representatives of shareholders (groups of which will make up no less than 10% holdings) need to participate as well. If the majority vote passes, the CEO is gone. If it fails, they stay.

Golden Parachutes are a particular kind of scam. The general idea is CEOs need a level of insulation and buffer from the consequences of their actions. I do not mean that as they escape running a company into the ground. But they have competing interests looking over them. There's the general stockholders, the board members, etc, all looking for payouts. Plus, you know, keeping the company afloat. And sometimes, well, often actually, CEOs have to make choices for the company that upset everyone else, or visa versa. The Golden Parachute is a rip cord for when the competing interests make the job impossible. The payouts were normally large enough to keep everyone somewhat at bay from putting too much pressure on him and making the job impossible. Pull cord to get out, take a large chunk of money noone wants to pay. Or it was supposed to be. It was for awhile. There were very specific circumstances it could be pulled in the contract that were not easy to have happen, by design. Then some bright guy figured out they could use the mechanism to loot a failing company for that big payout. A CEO could engineer a company into dire financial straights instead of trying to fix it and pull the cord. After that the entire idea became, well, just a scam. A big payout for when a CEO leaves. It's more a bribe so the CEO doesn't purposefully wreck the place on his way out the door.

I worked for a year in a small pharmaceutical company. My impression is that 99% of their interest was in 3 things: marketing, sales, compliance. How well the flagship drug/therapy/medicine worked, the side effects, the cost, and satisfaction with outcomes were a very, very, very distant 4th. That experience pushed me more toward ayurvedic and naturopath treatments. Or, just learning to cope with my ailments.

Excuse me....when do we get to vote on who receives funds that WE are putting into the system? Because, honestly, I wouldn't have given them either of those amounts since they pretty much gouge our citizens every day and if they don't have better money management skills than that within their business then I don't think they should have gotten the contract. Add to that, the research that had already been done and was used as a base for this round of R&D was ALREADY funded by us and they had been using it for free for years to produce other medications they profited from with no return to us. These corporations raping our coffers is getting on my damn nerves.
