    Two nitpicks: Italy has FIVE police forces (there's also the Guardia di Finanza that deals with financial crimes, the provincial police that operates on a provincial level, and the local police that operates on a single city or a small group of towns), and the Carabinieri's loyalty was only to the king. And when the king decided Mussolini had to go, they obeyed.

      Correction, four national: Polizia di Stato (State Police), Arma dei Carabinieri, Guardia di Finanza and Polizia Penitenziaria (Jail Police)
      Provincial and Local police corps are each independent and controlled by the local municipal or provincial "governments", but they don't have the same powers as the national forces nor the equipment

    I worked alongside the Carabinieri in Mogadishu in 1993 - they weren't "Soldiers" like we were, but they were very competent, professional and absolutely hilarious to be around. They also had the best food in the field that I've ever seen anywhere and I made every excuse possible to go to their compound whenever I wanted really good chow, strong espresso and a cold beer. Great dudes! 😁👍🇺🇸🇮🇹 We happy few!

    14:14 this is a very famous picture of the partisans and one of the women was actually a friend of my great-grandmother. My great-grandmother helped her by giving her clothes and food for the other partisans. After the war the woman in the picture got a medal from the president, but my great-grandmother had already passed away at that point, so the president invited my family to the ceremony and kissed my father and my uncle on the forhead. The woman in the picture said that my great-grandmother should've been at the ceremony right in front of the others because of her help. This was all in the city of Pistoia in Tuscany. Thank you The Front for this amazing documentary❤❤

    I think you partially missed the point: Carabinieri have always been loyal to the king and to the country. Even for an antifascist Carabiniere it was his duty to obey any Prime Minister the King had named. There were no shifting alliance or anything similar. Just Carabinieri doing what they've been trained to: be faithful through the centuries, no matter what.
    BTW, I'd like to add more info on modern days Carabinieri. As the videos already said, the Carabinieri are multi-purpose military police force which can be used both in and out the country as indipendent police force and as light infantry. They have a Tier-1 Special Forces units, Paratroopers, Heliborne specialized squadrons, Mechanized units and Coastal and Blue water units as well as specialized units for environment and artistic heritage protection, labour policing etc. In military operation they work alongside the army in police tasks, peacekeeping operations, hostage rescues, local forces training, reconaissance and intelligence, crowd and riot control, humanitarian aid and VIP protection. They're more like soldiers with an intense police training background than a normal military police.

    • @christopherconard2831
      @christopherconard2831 4 місяці тому +5

      It's how I've seen them. They are loyal to the throne, not to the butt sitting in it. Similar to the US Secret Service, they obey the Office of the President, not the President.
      It's a weird line with a lot of grey areas, but there is a difference.

    • @FunkyRezable
      @FunkyRezable 4 місяці тому +3

      @@christopherconard2831Bingo. The US Secret Service is a great comparison. If I remember correctly the Carabinieri are still the ones who have to defend the President during wartime, riot, civil war etc. The Corazzieri (Carabinieri cavalry unit) once were the Royal Guard, nowadays thay act as Presidential Guard.
      Another thing I think it's pretty unique to the Carabinieri is their full inclusion in our daily life. Pretty much every city and every town (even the smaller one) has a Carabinieri station. The station chief has been for decades as important as the mayor or the local priest for the people.

    I was stationed it Italy for a little over three years. The "carbs" were everywhere and did not fuck around. They operated the gates to the base at night along with the MPs. One night, there was a scuffle at the bar/gas station across the street, and the Carbs on duty went over to check it out. Ended up being a big bar fight. During the nonsense, a couple of Moroccan guys took off into the cornfield next to the bar/gas station. The Carbs just hosed the field with their SMGs. They went in later and dragged the bodies out to the road.
    I talked to several Carbs in my time in Italy. Several were paratroopers and had deployed to Afghanistan.

      You have to know that back in those days in Italy there were communist terrorists which were used to kill people with bombings in major cities (in some of them, like the one happened in Naples, also US military members lost their lives and / or were kidnapped; they kidnapped also a General of the American Forces !!!) and the Carabinieri were tasked to oppose them, and in addiction, they come from the military branches of the armed forces, they are more or less our "military police". That is why they were wearing machine guns !!! They are also tasked to protect V.I.P.s and magistrates like Falcone and Borsellino, which fight and fought against the mafia... All types of mafias...

      Back in the 70 and 80s, which in Italy are referred to as "Anni di Piombo" (Years of Lead, the material of the bullets) the Carabinieri were tasked with the objective to repel the communist and fascist terrorist groups which used to kill and maim civilians and magiastrates with bombings in the major cities, and they fulfilled the tasks...
      That is why they carry MGs...
      They are also tasked with the objective to repel the various mafia organisations as law enforcers and defend the VIPs and foreigner chiefs of State in visit in the country. They are the personal guard of the Presidente della Repubblica too.
      During wars and taliban riots they are tasked with the work of peacekeeping and training of the local armed forces and police alike...
      And they are also trained as paratroopers and counter insurgents armed forces... The so called "9th Col Moschin'', tier 1 spec ops paratrooper force dedicated to chasing the mafia members. Their name dates back to the World War 1 era... Col Moschin is a mountain where the Carabinieri armed forces showed their military prowess during that war...

    When I was in Italy, there was a member of my church who was a Carabinieri. Occasionally, due to his duty requirements, he would come to church wearing his full uniform. Exploding bomb on his hat, red stripe on his trousers, black boots, etc. This was pretty cool, but what was even better (for someone from a country that supports gun rights) was he would come to church wearing his 9 MM side arm on his hip. Now that was really cool.

    There is a big difference between Polizia and Carabinieri, and is not that Polizia is a civil organization. Wherever there's a municipality you can find a Carabinieri station, Polizia is found in cities, that is, Polizia is more an "urban" law enforcement organization, even Polizia Ferroviaria (railway police) is not present in ALL railway station; the only exception is Polizia Stradale, that patrols mostly Autostrade (toll higways). Carabinieri on the other side are those you go to when someone steals your wallet and you are not in a city, no matter how backwater a municipality is.
    Furthemore, lableling the whole Carabinieri corp/armed force as nationalist is _wrong_. As said elsewhere, Carabinieri where loyal to the state, in WW II that meant being loyal to the king: Italy was still officially a monarchy, there was the royal navy (Regia Marina), the royal air force (Regia Aereonautica), and royal army (Regio Esercito) comprising Carabinieri. They simply _remained_loyal_to_the_king_ all along the war era. When Mussolini was the king prime minister and fascist law was the law of the kingdom, they enforced it, but when Mussolini was someone against the state, its laws were not supported any more and remaining Carabinieri in RSI become an unarmed law enforcement agency, still the only one available everywhere, no matter how backwater a place is.
    About Salvo D'Acquisto, Carabinieri could the only armed force (now they are an armed force on their own) who has trained its own Patron Saint... :)

In the early 60s, my father during his military period was assigned to his Army regimental HQ secret counter-espionage office. He held the "books" on all the soldiers, NCOs and officers in the regiment, including the regimental commander, the colonel. All personal info of said men going back 5 generations was kept under key. Immagine that!!! My father's contacts in case of an "issue" with some member of the regiment, the Carabinieri. He even had 2 first cousins one with his exact name as Carabinieri NCOs. They where not an istrument of repression but a police force . After the king made peace with the allied , they obey his order to join them in the liberation of Italy and low enforcement. After the war and the referendum that made italy a republic , the last king relieve the carabinieri from loyalty to himself and accepts the vedict of the referendum to avoid a civil war , and serve the state of Italy like before .

    There are three police forces in Italy (1) the National Police (Polizia di Stato), (2) the Carabinieri a gendarmerie, (2) vigili municipal police

    • @johnkelly3886
      @johnkelly3886 2 місяці тому

      I must concede, I got the police force organizations wrong. I should have split them by ministry. (1) the State Police (Polizia di Stato) falls under Dipartimento della Pubblica Sicurezza (the Ministry of Public Security ). (2) the Carabinieri a gendarmerie, which falls under the Defence Ministry. (3) Guardia di Finanza (the Finance Police) which falls under the Economy Ministry. (4) Polizia Penitenziaria - the Prisons Police, falls under the Ministry of Justice. (5) Polizia Provinciale (Provincial Police) are sub-national jurisdictions and fall under the provincial governments. They are responsible for enforcing environmental law and traffic. (6) The Vigili are municipal police, falling under the jurisdiction of the comune, and responsible for enforcing its bylaws.
      Five and six are better described as levels of policing, falling under the constraints of national framework legislation, but consisting of numerous independent jurisdictions. One to four are independent organizations, all on national level of government.

    Carabinieri were born after the french occupation as an inheritance kf the french army, the carabianiere were inspired by the neapoleon dragoons that were line infantry soldiers who used horses to move in the battlefield. After the french gone the Savoia who were kings of Sardinia and Piemonte thought that a unit like that would be very effective against insurgents and protest from the peasents of the kingdom, so they spread a lot of barracks in every small village, and still today you find Carabinieri everywhere around Italy but you will find police only in big cities, they are really close to population while police are very didtant

    The name is derived from the French Word carabinieer meaning "soldier armed with a carbine". The Carbine displayed in the video would not have been around in 1726. A Carbine is simply a long gun that has a barrel shortened from its original length. The smaller size and weight makes them easier to handle, particularly from a horse. Paratroopers, artillery soldiers, and other non-infantry soldiers who do not require full length rifles also use them.
    .
    Inspired by the French gendarmerie, the corps was created by King Victor Emmanuel I of Sardinia with the aim of providing the Savoyard state of the Kingdom of Sardinia with a police corps. Previously, police duties were managed by the Dragoni di Sardegna Corps, created in 1726 and composed of volunteers. After French soldiers had occupied Turin at the end of the 18th century and later abandoned it to the Kingdom of Sardinia, the Royal Carabinieri Corps was instituted under the Royal Patents of 13 July 1814.[9] The name is derived from the French word carabinier, meaning "soldier armed with a carbine."[10] Source: Wikipedia

At Malga Bala 12 captured RSI carabinieri were k'lled by Yugoslav communist forces. Also in the Campo Marzio Barracks in Trieste, 97 RSI soldiers and former Carabinieri were captured by the Yugoslav forces, the prisoners were all elim'nated in the mass*cres known as the foibe mass*cres. The soldiers under Mussolini were not of dubious loyalty and efficiency they were like all other regular soldiers (good men). If you have to tell a story, tell it in full, not in half.

    I live 2 mile from the point where the Italian front halted in the Apennines in the winter of 1944. My father has always told me that my uncle, an Italian soldier in Yugoslavia, had fled home to Italy after the Italian defeat to join the anti-fascist resistance. Fanatical fascists arrived from the main town to the countryside at my grandfather's house, accompanied by the Carabinieri who, as the footage doesn't recall, also carried out tasks of territorial army for the Italian state and therefore had their own barracks in every small and peripheral locality. Well, my uncle, the eldest son, seeing the fascist militias coming up the valley and with my grandfather absent, played a desperate card (with the consent of the other family members): he decided to pretend to be my absent grandfather; he answered the militiamen's questions, saying that he hadn't heard from his son (himself actually) since the surrender. And the fascist militiamen left. My uncle's partisan comrades were hiding in the barn: if the deception had been discovered, everyone (men, women, children, livestock) would have been slaughtered and the farm would have been set on fire. The Carabinieri who had been forced to accompany the fascist militia in their dirty counter-guerrilla work knew my uncle and grandfather personally and realized the deception; but they remained silent, actually confirming my uncle's false identity as my grandfather, saving everyone's lives and obviously risking their own (if the deception had been discovered, they too would have been executed). In Italy, if you need to, you can trust the Carabinieri. Honor!

      The Left generally does not extoll the virtues of militarism. The Left may have run countries that had armies but those armies are seen as a means to an end. Fascism teaches that army is of itself a good thing and militarism inculcates admirable qualities in individuals and society at large. Left wing and Right wing perspectives on militarism are very different.
      Also, standard Left wing teaching says that state structures should ultimately wither away.
      By all means criticize left wing thinking but you need to understand it properly first.

To allow the king to remain on the throne and keep the grasp and comand, more or less, of the Carabinieri. He should have dismissed the king and his bodyguards, before trying to gain the leadership... Instead he wanted all and wanted it right here right now (and RIGHT WING, if you pass me the joke!!!😅) ... And he allied with Hitler too...
      Those were the silly errors he made... The other ones being the so called "Omicidio Matteotti", when he ordered the Matteotti's killing, and the failed attack on Malta island...
      If Mussolini had allied himself with the western democracies, killed or arrested the king and avoided to kill Matteotti, and / or conquered Malta... The history, today, would have been totally different...
