I rarely comment on videos and was so irritated by listening to dispatch i just couldn’t resist . I’ve never felt so seen as i did when i started reading other comments about the terrible dispatchers on this case! 😅
One thing, Annie didn’t touch on in this video was how this affected their autistic son and brother. He apparently witnessed the murder, and because he’s nonverbal, couldn’t express what happened. He apparently sits by the window looking for the return of his beloved mother, and still doesn’t understand that she’s gone forever.
This is heartbreaking. I didn't realize he witnessed what happened to his mother. I've worked with children and adults with Down Syndrome for 30 years. They are very loving and very special people. 😢
My 14-year-old son- who is autistic and fully verbal- understands why and how his Daddy died. He knows Daddy lives in Heaven and that I am technically a widow… But we still talk about him as if he were alive. I cannot imagine how hard it was for their son to see his mommy murdered…and to live on each day with that torture. God bless their family…
I think Bruce sounds so angry on the 911 call because he was likely dissociating a bit and redirecting his attention to the crazy stalker stuff and how it might be connected.
I agree! He was angry that such a thing could’ve really happened in his home and to his precious and wonderful wife that had absolutely no enemies. He was angry at the loss of the wife he lost and couldn’t process it all.
He didn’t wanna marry that girl. Anyone that is truly committed to a relationship would know how to spell the name of their child, even if they were illiterate.
@@Kasmine2011 that’s the key sometimes this man didn’t even know how to spell his new unborn child’s name and was completely literate It’s not a matter of ignorance. It’s a matter of a unwillingness.
All of this for $3000? Jeff fabricates an entire stalking story, murdered an innocent woman, and left her body there in a house with her disabled son. This man is absolutely vile and sickening. Nobody in this lovely family did anything to deserve meeting Jeff.
When someone moves into your basement and then stuff starts going missing from inside your home…….it’s pretty obvious . I’m sure the dad new his daughters bf was a piece of shit but didn’t want to ruin his relationship with her and his grandchild

It takes time for the loss to sink in. U may "know" someone's died n get angry, but it would take time for the grief to sink in n actually hit u. @@jeanbeans7926
@@jeanbeans7926 Grief is very different for everyone, and rarely do people wind up breaking down in shock/horror/tears when they find out someone close to them is dead very suddenly. Most of the time, you don't even accept it at first, because it is so unexpected. It's so traumatizing and so unbelievable that your brain just doesn't get it at first, and it's pretty normal to hyperfocus on something else, like anger, before you accept the loss.
Sometimes sadness manifests as anger especially when you've been failed by police for MONTHS trying to tell them something is wrong and get them to do anything. When you're being harassed like that you damn near expect to be attacked physically at some point so no, it wouldn't be that shocking with that many attempted break-ins and anger at the pathetic department who left you as sitting ducks to die is reasonable @@jeanbeans7926
hmmm... family live in the house for 19 yrs with no issues, then this lazy, unemloyed "stranger" moves in and suddenly things are missing and weird things are happening and it never occured to them to think "hmmmm...Maybe it's the unemployed, lazy, liar?"
They're nice people who were probably giving him the benefit of the doubt. I'm pretty sure Mel knew and eventually called him out on the day she was murdered.
It did, of course, but you saw how much he gaslit even in this interview. Even though they had video proof he was lying he just kept saying he wasn't with such extreme confidence.
Lol. I guess it might come across as rude, but their job is to gain as much info as possible, as it’s the first point of contact in a crime & is extremely helpful to police solving the case & proof in court.
When the cop asks him what route he took to Applebees after he explains the route he like leans back and crosses his arms almost in a “yeah I nailed that” pose 😅 “they’ll never suspect me now”
I don't think he even told his mom anything about the money from other retells of the story. Jeffrey told them his parents didn't like them and didn't want to help, but turns out he didn't even include his parents in any of the conversations about the wedding
And it's sounding like Anna's dad didn't really like him as much as it was previously made out to be. There's just something off about the whole thing. Why would they kill her but leave the young man alone? Didn't they think he'd be able to say anything??
@@mariahillenbrand8396 the son has down syndrome so that's why he left him as a witness, because he couldn't really give an account. But the fact he killed his mom in front of him is crazy
The baby was already here and was 18 months old. I do agree if you are living in your parent's home, a real wedding should be the last thing you think of to spend money on. Just buy a wedding dress and go down to the courthouse.
As someone who lives in a forest in California I wholeheartedly welcome as much rain as mother nature allows because forest fires are absolutely terrifying.
I was just watching his interview on another channel yesterday. Many people commented on how he had no job, played video games all day and managed to find a lovely woman who wanted to marry him. Plus a beautiful daughter.
Thats the part i cant get past. I have 2 daughters, and theres no way their dating a guy that doesnt have a job, or even tries not to get a job. I mean just looking at the guy he looks like a lazy slob. Theres no way im letting some perfectly grown man live in my house doing nothing to help while im out working. And they were supporting rhe daughter to marry him, dumb. I wouldnt have paid for the venue, i d been like oh well guess you cant get married. I swear people dont have any common sense these days.
Hi Annie! Huge fan! I live about 1/2 mile from the home the murder was committed in and know others in the neighborhood. I believe the motive was financial. He didn’t have the money - or any money or job for that matter - to live up to the wedding and had weaved a web of lies that he thought best managed by murder. So pathetic and so heartbreaking that her son and granddaughter were in the home. Thank you for your amazing work and congratulations on your continued growing success ❤
I live in southern Ohio now but I was born and raised in a suburb outside of Cleveland for 23 years… not Strongsville but about 15 mins from it, and this hit home for me can’t imagine how it feels for you. So sad ): I’m sure a lot of my friends back home knew Melinda from her being their teacher ):
I grew up in strongsville my whole life. I'm in olmsted falls now, but this is tragic. I remember a murder also on hallow oval off westwood Dr around 2007 maybe? That case was 1 street over from my house.
I think that either the mom figured out what he was doing stealing the money and pretending there were intruders, or he planned on killing mom first then the dad to get the house and money for him and his soon to be wife and he hoped the intruders would be blamed for their deaths. This was a very calculated murder in my opinion.
your second theory makes so much sense to me! he was so adamant saying there was an intruder. he had been trying to set this up for months, and probably would’ve tried murdering bruce next.
@@msmichelle746He was almost certainly gonna kill her next once he’d married her and gotten his hands on that money. She had nothing whatsoever to do with her *dearly* *beloved* mother getting murdered by this monster. Your baseless insinuation that she did is really disgusting.
Whoa, I think that might be a little uncalled for. I don't think that they were insinuating that she was involved at all. At least, thats not what I took from their comment. Just a fact that Anna would logically receive their inheritance and she would have probably been next to be unalived like you said
@@victoriad4115 This same person made another comment saying they believe Anna was in on it. I should have mentioned that, but I was so disgusted, not just at this person but every other cretin leveling similar unfounded accusations under this video. Predictable but still infuriating.
This has always been one of my favorite cases to study simply because of Bruce. It is awesome to watch him process in real time. I found it absolutely fascinating. And then of course when they bust Jeff's balls, or lack thereof, that was absolutely ah-mazing. This detective was awesome too.
I have seen several other channels cover this story but you always go so much more in-depth and include videos, pictures, files, etc. Thanks, Annie for always going above the rest! We appreciate you and your team!
He methodically planned this for a long time. All the harassment claims just to throw the detectives off. Huge backfire. He’s Absolutely pathetic. Disgusting. Selfish, putrid. I could go on and on….
And so could I. How the hell do all these beautiful young women continue to fall for these lazy, selfish, spoiled and entitled humans who call themselves men?? They are more trouble and work than babies are themselves.
I can’t believe she was still going to marry this guy before he killed her mother. No job, no charisma or looks And too lazy to even help around the house when they are getting a free place to live. He was never going to be a provider so she was going to have to work to support them instead of taking care of her little girl.
The part that is heart breaking...Kyle does not understand why she is no longer there and continues to look for her😢😢❤❤ this poor boy is the ultimate victim
Bruce was in shock. He was outraged that he had tried to figure this out and now his wife is gone. He’s mad his son was in the house. He’s mad his wife is dead. I think it sounded like a man trying to process his feelings. Women cry. Women get hysterical. Then they get mad. Men often get mad right away. A babysitter once lost my two year old and we THOUGHT she’d been hit by a car. The first thing my husband did was punch the ceiling of our car. He’s not violent but thinking his baby got hurt brought that out in him immediately. We can’t judge how someone deals with the worst moment of their lives.
Horrible. I can't imagine. My youngest daughter has down syndrome so I know first hand how special Melinda and her sons bond was. I read an article that while the family is out to dinner he stares out the window the whole time waiting for his mother to join them. It broke me. I know my daughter would do the same. And for what reason why?

This was so gut wrenching. To think he had this in mind for so long, and really thought up an elaborate set up of anonymous harassment over a long period of time that surely caused a lot of stress to his fiancé and her family is cruel in itself but this, god, this was devastating.
I actually watched this case and it was said that Jeffery hated Melinda it was said he was jealous because so many people loved her and for whatever reason he hated the fact that she was so loved 🥰
My gosh. I say this all the time .. people just suck! So sad and utterly heartbreaking. That poor family .. you walk in and find their wife and mom! Prayers for their healing ♥️

The photo of Mel and her young son just shatters my heart. The joy she had being his mother, his happiness being with his amazing mom. Her death was a massive loss to her family, especially her son.
I know my comment is only one among hundreds and probably too long to read… I had also heard this case covered by Mr. Ballen’s channel a while back and it makes me appreciate the different methods of story-telling you 2 have. When he told it, it focused on the mystery of all the events surrounding the family, so you didn’t know if it was going to be a ghost story, tale of a crazy stalker, an unsolved mystery or have some kind of M.Knight Shamalan twist. This channel clearly goes over the timeline, evidence, interrogations, work of law enforcement and how they all came together to solve the case in the end. You have a gift for showing the humanity behind a tragic event that I appreciate. Thank you. On the topic of humanity, I have seen some comment here that the family seemed unaffected/unemotional after Mel’s death. As someone who has experienced the death of a loved one, I can tell you that there is no way to predict how you will act in the aftermath. At first, I was in denial, even though I “felt” that it was going to happen soon. I just couldn’t fully accept it. At other times, I was angry at everyone and the injustice of it all, and at other times I was like a stone. I felt like all my emotions were getting buried in the ground with them and that I would never feel anything again. Sometimes, people don’t act perfectly how we think they should act when something happens, especially when they are so close to it. We should grant people a little more grace and accept that not everyone will display perfect sadness or grief in the same way. 💕
I first saw this story on Mr. Ballen’s Channel as well! I really enjoyed he mystery in the way he told it and I was so excited to see to find it on Annie’s too because we can get all the fine details and evidence of this horrible case
I don't understand how this couple were unable to save money in the 2 years they lived there or how the daughter wasn't aware of their finances. They could also have opted for a wedding at the park & a reception in the back yard. There are always cheaper options
This hits so close to home. I had a stalker that harassed my husband , kids and I… he was obsessed with me for some reason and threatened to get rid of my husband and kidnap my kids and I away. It was so scary. He would just be in his car outside out house at all hours of the night, call, revv his engine at all hours, try to break in… getting a restraining order didn’t help. That made it worse. He tried everything to get me to react. Luckily, my family and I were able to get past that and he went to jail. We were lucky. He had a gun and was armed and dangerous.
I still can’t figure out why he would steal things and terrorize the family-unless he had planned the whole thing and wanted everyone to think that the person coming to the house & supposedly trying to break in was the murderer. Nothing would have changed for him financially after the mother in law died so what was the point of killing her? So sad…..
When the cop asks him what route he took to Applebees after he explains the route he like leans back and crosses his arms almost in a “yeah I nailed that” pose 😅 “they’ll never suspect me now”
Cuz it’s a crime scene. To preserve any evidence that can solve the case! If u got people walking around, in & out, possible touching things (for example the Chris Watts case) it can tamper with evidence.
The husbands demeanour on the 911 call sounded so sus, but when you’re in shock, some people can’t cry and react, what appears, odd. I had 2 traumatic experiences of sudden deaths and I couldn’t cry when I learned of them. My whole body wanted to die at hearing the news, but I still couldn’t cry. I find that so strange about myself and how I react to such stress.
I think he sounded spot on after the supposed history as they knew then of people trying to break in, things disappearing, items being stolen, vehicles vandalized, and having to mentally deal with the person not being caught. I would be pissed too. I know I've had the same response when hot headed to things that have built up over time.
Dad's instinct was that the missing items have something to do with the daughter and Jeff, but he ignored it because he hoped it wasn't. When he said it could have all been bullshit, I think he is starting to have an inkling and figuring out the truth. Then as he tells the story he is like, well I wasn't there. Just slowly realizing the truth and still not wanting to.
I also live in CA and the first few rains this season I said, “it will make our lake so beautiful this summer, we need the rain for the lake.” The past 6 weeks of on and off rain I have felt like screaming to the sky, “ENOUGH!!!” It’s so hard to keep my three homeschooled kids happy when it’s raining (and they were super sick for two weeks so No extracurriculars). Anyway, three days of sunshine only to have a huge storm coming in. 😭😭😭 Looking forward to listening to this case…
I love your channel Annie. People are talking about the husband and daughter they need to realize people grieve differently. My mother died I didn't cry until the funeral and everything was done. The stress of it all had me putting my feelings on the back burner
The anger doesn't mean he didn't care. When my brother was murdered and the police had been refusing to listen to me I was a ticking time bomb. I was definitely distraught. I was grieving hard but my anger was through the roof.
I suddenly have a greater appreciation for my 2 son in laws. I've heard this case several times but not like this... Nobody explains it better than you do and not just this case, you put that same effort into all of your cases.. Thank you, It's appreciated that you go the extra mile for the Victims.
I totally understand his anger and frustration. He feels like everyone failed him and his family. He just wants to be heard for once. Prayers for the healing of this family and friends ❤ another great job!
I've seen this story before but I listened to you tell it again. One thing that breaks my heart about this whole thing is Kyle. 🥺💔😥 He was in the house when this POC murdered his mom and he left him there. 😱 And we'll never know how that affected him. Plus we do know how her loss affected Kyle moving forward. The profound loss that poor boy experienced is tragic. So tragic. What a depraved demented sicko Jeff was/is to do that. To do everything he did to a family who cared for him....took him into their home. Disgusting! A while back I happened to come across Bruce's Facebook page and I scrolled through it. I was very happy to see how Bruce and Kyle are total buddies now and do so much together and they've moved on in a powerful way. Bruce has a new girlfriend who also seems to have a wonderful relationship with Kyle. This is such a terrible situation. What could have possibly provoked Jeff to act out in such a disturbing way. He was a narcissist compulsive liar always trying to build himself up but was actually a loser. There are too many men who are passive and manipulative and losers these days. Instead of being the provider and protector of their family they are completely the opposite. Masculinity isn't toxic....what happens to a society when men stop being masculine is toxic. Prayers for this family and what they endured. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

I've been catching up on all your episodes! I love how you insert the interviews and lots of analyzed facts! Great work and love your sense of justice for the victims.
I know! I couldnt with either one of the 911 operators. I've heard so many calls where the operators are able to remain calm and firm yet have compassion & act appropriately.
No, she was being told a bunch of stuff and when he said the address, she was trying to find out if there was a break in because the dogs were found and lived at that address. 911 job is to gather as much info as possible.
For a homicide especially, personnel try to assimilate and reasonably, tentatively contextualize information exactly like the family dog having been loose. In this case, even if the dog didn’t behave in an alarm-raising fashion upon Scullin’s entry, the animal may have either sounded off loudly enough for neighbors or passersby by to hear and/or directly attacked Scullin once the man started stabbing and struggling with Melinda. What a horrid p.o.s. to end up with as a son-in-law.
I've seen the full interrogation of this idiot and I have to say thank you so much for not playing it all! I love seeing different shows on the same topic. It gives a different perspective. If I would have had to hear him sigh one more time I would have lost it. 😂

That makes me sick, I feel so bad for him. How could that monster do that!? In front of Kyle no less.
Jeff's sighs when he is getting called out on his lies are maddening.
I totally agree!
Yes! That’s exactly what I thought!
Some men don't like to show sadness.
That’s what I thought, too.
He didn’t wanna marry that girl. Anyone that is truly committed to a relationship would know how to spell the name of their child, even if they were illiterate.
I don’t know about that. I’m 36. My dad still spells my name wrong. Has my entire life. And my parents have been married for 42 years. 😂
Lol nah my dad still spells me and my sister's names wrong sometimes but he's a good dad 😅

It gets me. everytime
She looks like a sweet girl 😢
Harmony was such a precious little girl. It makes me sick that they did that to her and her body. So sad 💔
Was thinking the same thing 💔
The first time I saw her intro after watching her story I wanted to cry. She seemed like such a sweet girl with so much life ahead of her.
Im not sure why people think it's wrong to be angry when your wife has been murdered
Sure Angry, but not even a whiff of feelingshocked or sad or horrified? That's pretty darn weird.
agreed, he was mad because he had been trying to get police to take it seriously for months
My thoughts exactly. It’s ridiculous.
I can’t ever deal with these 911 dispatchers man 🤦🏻♀️ the rudest people ever
Lol. I guess it might come across as rude, but their job is to gain as much info as possible, as it’s the first point of contact in a crime & is extremely helpful to police solving the case & proof in court.
@@kr0wn.aSSaSSinIt’s extremely distressing for citizens! They need to be trained in tactful conversation skills
Jeff destroyed the family that loved and helped him. So sad.
So sadly, seems like he mostly did it because he didn't want to do chores or make any money, that's crazy
Ungrateful B....rd!
When the cop asks him what route he took to Applebees after he explains the route he like leans back and crosses his arms almost in a “yeah I nailed that” pose 😅 “they’ll never suspect me now”
His mom not giving the money directly to him is a huge warning sign. She knows him better than anyone

Why waste all that money on a wedding when you don't have any place to live and a baby on the way? That's the first red flag for me. 🙄🙄🙄
Many people feel like they “deserve” a big elaborate wedding. It makes no sense to me if you don’t already own a home and two cars
The baby was already here and was 18 months old. I do agree if you are living in your parent's home, a real wedding should be the last thing you think of to spend money on. Just buy a wedding dress and go down to the courthouse.

While I was watching Bruce I was thinking I had seen this before and as I'm watching him figure shit out as he's talking I knew I had.
And yet .. he is a loser child a user .. no thank you!!!

Hi Annie!
I grew up in Brunswick and remember this case very well 😞
I was thinking the same! He didn't have the money...actually was never GETTING the money...and now he was caught.
@@einalemainesra And then that would have lead to Anna inheriting things from her parents deaths.

27:59 its like you can hear the moment he puts all the little crazy things together and he realizes who he's let into his house....😢
These 911 calls are infuriating!! I get that they have some script they have to follow, but I would've been angry as well.
I can’t believe she was still going to marry this guy before he killed her mother. No job, no charisma or looks And too lazy to even help around the house when they are getting a free place to live. He was never going to be a provider so she was going to have to work to support them instead of taking care of her little girl.
Love is blind unfortunately. I did it for 8 years until I got fed up
Omg! Annie I love when you do longer episodes! You are the only one who I make the time to watch from beginning to end! You are amazing!
Jeff is a Super genius!
Everything he did led the cops DIRECTLY to someone IN THE HOUSE! It should be a case study in how NOT to commit a murder.
He was incredibly lazy and stupid.
I wonder how many times he got beatings in highschool?
Annie please cover the case of missing Elijah Vue in Wisconsin. So much is coming out about this case and it's heart breaking
Agreed. I feel his sadness and confusion.
Wait, your two year went missing!?! That's frightening. Did you find your child?
Horrible. I can't imagine. My youngest daughter has down syndrome so I know first hand how special Melinda and her sons bond was. I read an article that while the family is out to dinner he stares out the window the whole time waiting for his mother to join them. It broke me. I know my daughter would do the same. And for what reason why?
My daughter has autism and is non verbal and wouldn’t understand either. I’m not necessarily scared of dying but I am terrified of leaving her 😓

The photo of Mel and her young son just shatters my heart. The joy she had being his mother, his happiness being with his amazing mom. Her death was a massive loss to her family, especially her son.
I can’t with the whining and sighing during the police interrogation 🤦♀️
He sounds SO pathetic 😩
I know my comment is only one among hundreds and probably too long to read…
I had also heard this case covered by Mr.
Cannot stand Mr. Ballen.

I don't understand how this couple were unable to save money in the 2 years they lived there or how the daughter wasn't aware of their finances. They could also have opted for a wedding at the park & a reception in the back yard. There are always cheaper options
Out of subject but, I love your backdrop Annie. So classy and it certainly makes you as the focus.
22:00 😂 that stupid 911 dispatcher is ANNOYING AF!
Really love that you included the police interrogations. It is super interesting
Thank goodness you and your family are safe.
I still can’t figure out why he would steal things and terrorize the family-unless he had planned the whole thing and wanted everyone to think that the person coming to the house & supposedly trying to break in was the murderer.
Nothing would have changed for him financially after the mother in law died so what was the point of killing her? So sad…..
He probably figured that when the mother in law died, his fiance would be left with miney that he would have access to!
I can just feel Bruce trying to pull all the little pieces of information along with his suspicions and concerns about Jeffrey’s behavior.
When the cop asks him what route he took to Applebees after he explains the route he like leans back and crosses his arms almost in a “yeah I nailed that” pose 😅 “they’ll never suspect me now”
His exhaling I'm during the interrogations is so annoying omg
Thanks Annie, you do an amazing job reporting these terrible events. There are such sick people in this world. Everyone please stay safe.
Why do most dispatchers piss me off!!! Everyone go outside I’m sorry I am NOT LEAVING MY SIGNIFICANT OTHER DEAD OR ALIVE!!’
Cuz it’s a crime scene. To preserve any evidence that can solve the case! If u got people walking around, in & out, possible touching things (for example the Chris Watts case) it can tamper with evidence.
The heavy sighs when he’s getting called out for lying is driving me insane.
I think he sounds exactly what he should sound like! Angry, hurt & devastated.
Seriously, is the first 911 operator real! She is mental. And she is the one that should be a pro in a horrible situation.
WHAT a TOTAL waste of space.

Exactly! I agree with what you said about Bruce. He noticed the red flags. For his daughter he pushed the gut feeling aside.
Wait a minute. The 911 call taker hears that a woman was attacked and yet starts in about a LOST DOG that was reported to this address??? WHAT???
I know! I couldnt with either one of the 911 operators. I've heard so many calls where the operators are able to remain calm and firm yet have compassion & act appropriately.
The only thing, I could see why she asked. If it was their dog. It may have evidence of it. Therefore they would need to be handled ?
I’ve never been more convinced of someone’s guilt!
