The SHADE George gives during the final walkthrough is SOO deserved. I don’t like to pick on people but; forgive me, it is deserved. Even Martin had a hard times answering if he would ever move. “How bad would that be?” Ummm, I feel for you Martin.
He was asking how bad it would be to live there forever, not to move.
I've been a builder for many years and have seen quite a fair bit of sheds. The plans in ryan's package ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxB7IXYxLzb_Ichhe45zM3Im5xfEiSp9vB have some of the nicest looking sheds i've seen in a while.
The outside looks great & welcoming until you go inside where nothing makes sense.
She should've just built a new home. She had the old timbers burned when there are people who appreciate old wood and know how to use it while preserving it. Sad that so much was destroyed .
I agree!
Indeed that was sad.
Looking at the burn pile ... those are the rotten ends of the beams.
I think the builders scarpered with the good bits from the middles to reuse elsewhere.
She destroyed the barn.....fool
The most UN bearable homeowner I've ever encountered
She's horrible!
The sofa with its back to the fireplace says it all ....
Ridiculous isn't it?
Lol
Claire doesn't know what she's doing and won't listen to anything, she's a control freak, the house could have been great but its horrible.... poor husband
I think Martin should have Clare sign a post-nuptial agreement stating that she will carry all groceries and kitchen related supplies and equipment to and from the kitchen. The undersigned will also be responsible for carrying away any waste generated from said kitchen.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
George shows his lightly-veiled contempt for this woman in his narration. Just listen! He sees her demanding personality.
Yes, it wasn't so light-veiled in my opinion, considering that George is such a gentleman. I've watched many episodes of this show and they are all filled with such warmth. Not this one. This lady boss almost made me stop watching it. She's hard to stomach. Poor husband...
How about the husband?!😲
If I was Marten, I'd have wished I NEVER left my job in the city..... SHE'S all set.
She doesn't NEED him...🤦♀️
She's ALL she needs...😖
Sad that so much of the character of the barns is lost for good. Those old beams were a treasure. I have a coat rack made from old beams, it's gorgeous! A bleeding bedroom ceiling is a no go and the layout of the entire building doesn't make sense at all. Well at least SHE got the home SHE wanted! I like how George hinted at the fact and she over talked him to say to her husband " I dragged you out to have a look at things". She is a control freak....not my kind of person to know!
Not my kind of person either. This is the first show hosted by charismatic George that I frequently thought about moving on to another. This lady proved to be a good manager, but she destroyed the building's tons of charms and character, and to top it off with the most senseless lay out possible. Poor husband...
I'm not even halfway through and I can tell I feel the same way about her already. I was sad for the husband when he came to join her and there was nothing for him to do. Not very nice of her... :(
I enjoyed this because it shows what a bad conversion looks like and how much thought should go into the layout. It could have been super. Its only saving grace is the quality of the work - good builders ! Can't stop thinking about doing the "big shop" and unloading from car to kitchen...
All actions have an equal and opposite reaction. For each load into the kitchen, there's an equivalent (dirty) load out to the garbage bins. Can you imagine carrying garbage through your living room, down the stairs, and through your dining room? This woman has the taste and sense of an earthworm.
The sad part is that she says she spent a year thinking about the flow of the house, to get it right. I can't imagine at all what could possibly have crossed her mind. Not only did she not think about the trudge to the kitchen with the groceries and out with the trash, but she didn't think about the flow within spaces like the living room, dining room, or bathroom. I guarantee no one has taken many meals down the stairs to that dining table shoved under the stairs. Honestly, the good thing is that with the bathroom fixtures plumbed next to that ridiculous window that should be an entrance, it might not be too hard for a future owner to swtich the kitchen and living room with the bedroom and master bath, and put in a large glazed entrance into the new kitchen.
I think the desperate need she expressed in the beginning to be totally original really tripped her up. Sure, don't cut-and-paste replicate everything you saw in a magazine, but don't reject a good comprehensive concept because it's been done before, either. Sometimes the things you come up with aren't innovative; they were rejected for a reason.
Good builders, though!
@@coolcpa3321 I LOVE YOUR WONDERFUL SENSE OF HUMOUR ~ Xx
There won't be a problem unloading from the car....it will be "hubbies" job! Lol
George: "The barn IS full of character. There's a wealth of old beams and fabulous stonework."
Clare: "We'll sort THAT out!"
"Stones are intimidating"
After watching the entire episode....near the very end when George asks, "you will live here the rest of your lives ?". I nearly fell out of my chair with laughter when the husband responds, " How bad can it be ?". For obvious reasons while remaining kind , that was very funny !
so jealous.
Divorce in the offing
She runied a beautiful historical building by turning it into a hodgepodge.
One of my least favorite restorations. I sure wouldn't want to have to carry my groceries UPSTAIRS to the kitchen!
Yes a very poor soulless transformation.
I just starting watching and had to pause. Carry the groceries upstairs through the living room? what nonsense lol
Why do we make ourselves suffer through these programmes?
@@roofterrace4930 and don’t forget; where the groceries enter the trash must exit. Still have a few minutes left but I’m hoping she didn’t put carpet down anywhere!
I live in a walk-up flat (no lift) so I carry groceries in and trash out using the stairs all the time. If I had a house, would I organize it the same way? Hell no.
Some people should not be allowed to do a project like this and this lady is the perfect example of that
The layout is crazy. Having to carry groceries that far and having to carry food down a set of stairs to the dining room.
Winner of England's Worst Layout of the year, whatever year that was... LOL!
Based on her layout, if I were George, I would have recommended installing a lift, or even a dumb waiter for bringing heavy items and groceries up to [and down from] the second floor. If they intended to remain there for the rest of their lives, they should have future-proofed their home for when they are aged.
Destroyed every unique architectural feature. But she accomplished her goal, living right on top of mummy and daddy. Red ceiling? Sofa blocking fireplace? Museum sized bathroom window? Horrible ideas she has. When you sell it you'll take a huge loss all due to her ginormous ego.
They’ll never sell it. It’s on mummy’s property. Martin is stuck. It’s a qualified investment.
I totally agree my friend , she might like it but it's absolutely uncomfortable , good luck with that kitchen Madame overall with you groceries taking them all around you house and upstairs , ridiculous.
23:59 in her words "it could be a pretentious foley!" I get the impression it's my house from my parents, nothing to do with you!... and that's exactly how he's been treated, it's nothing they can ever sell not only because it's terrible but also because it's so close to mummy and daddy, what stranger would want to live that close to someone they don't know. It's a terribly sad situation all around. I wonder what she thought watching herself if she did?
Ommmmmg. Everything is said with that fireplace! 😂🤣😂🤣😂 that poor barn!!! 💔💔💔
This is what can happen if you get a treasure for free and don't have to work hard to buy your dream. you just don't understand and appreciate what made this barn unique
She wouldn't respect a good architect or interior designer, she thinks she knows better, but she doesn't...its horrible.
Others might have fond childhood memories and want to revere the barn. It's not the getting it for free that gave her a poor sense of design or the inability to listen to the advice of others.
Sad about what she did to that poor building. It is going to be difficult to live in and even sell
Horrible, nearly unlivable layout that makes no sense at all.
i saw this about a year and forgot just how loathesome she was, and weak he was, and how they utterly destroyed the character and charm of this once beautiful building. My god, she was a hateful creature.
Totally agree horrible women she would be better off being a single women , just all about herself what she wants and that's it
I absolutely agree, you can certainly tell that he was castrated a long time ago
she s shelfish about her decisions .horrible layout ,and the bathroom windon is beautiful but not for a bathroom
He divorced her eventually
@@lugubrioz like that wasn’t laid in the stone she did her best to plaster over.
THE HUSBAND IS LAZY AS HELL.
@@skyqueen1148 He was working most of the time at a job. How can that be lazy. Plus she refused to include him in anything. No wonder he worked so much.
I think other commenters and the shows editors are simplifying some obvious complex psychology going on with this couple
are u a psychologist? WTF?
why do you want to live in an old building when you've taken out everything nice about it. Just build new at that point. Sheeesh... I really didn't like her choices, and that poor husband... Good lord.
I agree!
I am sorry but there is a reason why he works so far from home her nasty personality says it all .
Yes, she is so passive aggressive. Calling him a gargoyle and saying he was walking around like a chickens with is head off. So derogatory and she laughs like it is funny and OK. Yes, I would work far away from this place and her too.
You're too sensitive. I bet you're not married.
@@skyqueen1148 this show has shown hundreds of couples that love each other more then she loves him. If I were married to her I'd kill myself.
@@skyqueen1148 I’ve been married over 12 years and don’t demean my husband or anyone like this. Only a narcissist would do that PERIODT
Seems to me that anyone would detect the paving-over of beauty and charm for someone's whim. She created an unsellable house that's only a cut above ordinary. Sigh.
It was a beautiful barn, now it's a uptown interior with a shell of a barn, one very sad barn now.... the beauty of the barn is gone forever by the stroke of her wand.
Witches wield wands.
Pity she wasn't convinced to make some changes. Kitchen on the first floor at the end of the barn, and if she wishes to stay there forever, how are they going to carry all the shopping up a flight of stairs and empty the rubbish bins when they're elderly?
As for the red ceiling, doesn't connect to anything in the rest of the house, neither does the modern fireplace in the entrance hall. And the living room is badly divided with the sofa with its back to the fireplace - why didn't she create two separate spaces 1 in front of the fireplace and another for TV area? Obviously the husband had to obey her rules!!!!!!!
She really knows how to demasculate a man doesn't she? Such a Pity
My thoughts exactly, but I’m guessing she’s the sort that will have someone bring the shopping up for her.
I LOVE it when George makes very sarcastic comments. If I were the renovator and heard his sarcasm about how shitty I've done the restoration, I might as well just kill myself lol. Seriously tho, what an ugly result. That fireplace is grotesque and wtf with the super red ceilings lmao! She's got a very, very bad taste I can almost feel it in my tongue lol.
43:48 - What do you think you've got out of this, Martin?
Arms immediately get crossed defensively over his chest, starts swinging back and forward . . .
This is from about ten years ago - I wonder if he's still there?
No. They realised how ugly their house was and decided to abandon it
I noticed the crossed arms too, he his being abused.
Oh that poor beautiful barn :(. Why oh why would you want to take away it’s rustic charm. That’s what makes a restoration so incredible in the end..
To remove those 200 year old beams and burn them!!!! Disgusting build.
@@jbart5260 my heart broke in two when those beams were removed. With all the advances in carpentry and building there are ways to preserve and save beams like those for the next generation and beyond. By removing them the value of the build dropped significantly not to mention the historical value. What ever happened to preservation n restoration and incorporating the new, not destroying an entire "restoration" to make it a new build. So disgusting
Wow. Sad to see those timbers destroyed. At least she left the outside alone.
I totally feel for the guy. I know what it's like to have dreams, ideas, and aspirations only to find on the day, to be left completely sidelined as though those hopes and desires had never have existed, or were to be respected in anybody else's minds..
I did not like the dominary attitude of Claire, and I believe you were right George. The fireplace is too modern for the barn, the bathroom window does not make sense, it could have been a grand entrance to the home and the furniture style and position does not seem to fit. Overall, I feel bad the husband was not taken into account. 😒
Yes and on top of it she says she spent months on the planning making sure everything made sense. This was hard to watch.
I'd agree with George re covering up the old stone. Kitchen in wrong place, fireplace could have bn better placed.
I think Martin showing up at home only on weekends was by design, and I don't blame him.
She obviously has some specific places she puts her attention ...
Poor husband. Only redeeming thing about this build is the building company, amazing and hardworking men....hope this is a good advertisement for them.
Too much of the character of the home was destroyed. Why did they burn the beams from the barn that weren't used . They could have placed them in the horse barn and maybe used later if they wanted changes in their house or sold them for someone else to use in another home renovation .
Just criminal
Next stop for this disaster is "The Unsellables".
All Clare's project...and Clare's home. Moving to her parent's farm into her parent's old barn. Good for her and the horses maybe, but Martin was excluded from the project before he even left London. She was quite wrong to trash all those beautiful, secure, intact 200-year old timbers. Uselessly burning them afterwards was just an insult.
He will divorce and she will never be able to sell the place. Horrible woman, terrible renovation
Yep, it’s all her, she drives me nuts with her bossy selfishness
she mentioned her horses...before her family.!
I liked the windows.....well except the bathroom. The house was a cold decor..a barn could really be a warm space space.
The stairs were nice.
this episode me cry - seeing how this crazy woman has ruined what could have been an amazing house.
jesus ..ur crazy too. what the hell?
@@skyqueen1148 Nope! Sumanth is right on the money.
I LOVE THE STONE WALLS
The dining room looks nice, but that's about it.
I don't know why they had to take out the beams in the sitting room and kitchen. She claimed that the ceiling would only be so high, but that was still over all their heads and you could leave the beams exposed (like they did in another room) and have some nice beams to make the ceiling more interesting. They could also have just mounted the television over the fireplace in the sitting room instead of having the sofa face away from the fireplace. That bathroom is awful too.
In the end it's the owners desires. We can't truly know that the husband seemingly being left out of the equation wasn't acceptable to him. After all, "happy wife, happy life" is a cliche for a reason. Viewers of George Clarke's work know his great love of restoration and integrity of historic character. This simply was not a restoration in that sense but a modern conversion.
The kitchen in the upper floor at the end side and the red ceiling? Also the super huge bathroom with huge glass windows?. The Architect is right in saying that it is best for that to be the front door. Well it is their home so their choice. Something is odd.
Her choices only. She didn't allow him to participate.
I am so disgusted over this. She completely ruined that 200 year old barn
She took every ounce of character out of that barn. I’m sorry but that red ceiling is hideous and there’s too many styles mixed into one building.
I’m starting to see why the preservation people exist
Absolutely awful renovation. Practicality of everyday living and disregard to original character is so obvious.Good organization skills Clair, that’s all.
This woman is an insult to every aspect of renovatetion.
The most obvious choice in the world is to swap the dining room and the lounge. Would make that house much more liveable without spending another penny.
The house has to work for them and not the other way around. It's only bricks and mortar after all. I do wonder, though, if the couple are still together. I can imagine the wife is not easy to live with.
Regardless of the many negative comments, compare this renovation/restoration to many others. This had a budget, a plan, and tradesmen from the beginning. Most lacked either a good budger, a good plan, and tradesmen and as a result, the people had great difficulty in finishing their projects. This did not. However, the female "planner" did not take into consideration the integrity and integration of the internal and external structures. Sadly, as a result, everything is her way or no way = messy way. Regardless of George's opinion of "stunning", I would not live there even if it was given to me mainly because too much of the original house has gone.
Remember, though, as George's very meaningful statement at the end, "Claire got exactly what SHE wanted."
'nuf sed
I agree!
Some peoples taste is in their mouths.
It's too bad she couldn't carry over her love for horses to the house. Sad.
or to her husband
It'd be interesting if he revisited some of the projects now...years later..and maybe interview the kids. I'm thinking about an Irish project where the English little girl wasn't too happy about leaving her friends in England..
Or this couple..are they still together?
I think the husband bailed.
I was waiting for Martin to reach for his red swingline stapler.
She knows what she wants and makes it happen. That's great. And her builders are really good. Too bad it's cost a potantially great building all it's character.
that poor man he has to put up with that bossy woman, me it would turn me into a murderer she be burried under the patio by now, he has the patents of a saint putting up with her, she took over everything yeah its her parents porperty ect ect but by not involving her husband in this is a damn disgrace and she should feel ashamed of herself but people like her it wouldnt even enter her brain, the barn could have been fantastic but doesnt look great to me
She needs to be divorced
She's a terrible human being...gosh!
It looks like the fireplace out of Beetlejuice
I've watched many Restorationman and Escape to the Country, my favorite conversion is still a Barn Conversion. They lost the entire character of the barn. SAD!!! George is phenomenal, as always, yet Clare won't listen to ANY of his ideas. So sad they couldn't keep the timbers. Too bad they couldn't find a place to use the old timbers. Wonderful, these people saving UK history. Not sure why the UK doesn't fund/grant more of these projects to SAVE the history. Clare did a GREAT job by supervising the project...Martin got bored, however, really gave up the charm of the barn. Looks like they bled all over the ceiling. George makes EXCELLENT points.
Can't imagine being old and navigating that house.
Reservations - and awful red ceiling - aside, it's beautiful to the most part. The builders and workmen were superb.
What you really mean is to see if Claire got what she wanted ! ! !
This sure was one of the smoothest renovation ever, not surely a tasteful one, but definitely the smoothest
The majority of the comments criticize her design choices, but keep in mind she is an accountant not an architect. This is not to defend her, rather to contextualize the end-result and serve as a remember to let the architects do the architect stuff, the builders do the builder stuff, and the accountants do the accountants stuff. Know your limitations.
she had experts around her offering her good advice but she refused to listen. In the end, she got what she wanted
What the heck is with the dynamic of this relationship. This guy left his professional job, sold his car, and ended up pushing a broom through the whole project. Really? The wife was good at what she did, but at what appears to be an entire exclusion of her husband, even from daily access to the job site? When asked if he felt left out, he stumbled with, I was included in some decisions. I'm sure he feels fully at home in this kind of environment. pathetic
I had to stop watching. Sad, when buildings like these get into the hands of those with only money and no taste or sense.
Um, interesting that she says she got the house she wanted, not they wanted and then promptly says and I’ve got my horses on tap, before she says and family. I think I see where her priorities are.She doesn’t let her husband answer at the end, she answers for him. Did not like the house, even if it was a modern design it wasn’t that nice. If she was going to change out the roof and all, why not bring in more light to spaces. Place seemed very dark upon entering.
what a shame she didn't restore the old barn - it has lost a lot of it's charm and character
In first 10 mins got a feeling, so paused and checked the comments first. I was right. Thanks to comments section, I was saved from watching till end..
Well i just watched the full episode and im telling you what, if i was married to her it wouldnt last ! What an obnoxious control freak she is, and what a fanny he is for letting her use him like a doorstep ! Yes the outcome look was just ok for me, all the stonework and pillars she knocked down and plastered over made me sad for the building ......
Oh thank you Marc I agree 100%. She's god awful selfish.
I make mine your comment, word for word. I am sure if he's still around he's the one who carries all groceries to the kitchen, and all the trash outside. Worst nonsensical layout of the century...
Strange layout and no respect for the history of this barn. The modern fireplace is totally out of character.
A staircase on the outside, from kitchen would make sense ( even as a safety aspect - fire escape ) with a large door. Always a good idea to have more than one way in and out of a property IMO
wow the husband will be replace soon just like she replaced all the good character of this beautiful building wow
Little or no drama. On time and maybe on budget. When professionals are involved there's a huge difference in the owners experience.
Lovely...
Poor Martin, this parrot is so full of herself
What a bossy boots Clare is!
Although, this Barn was absolutely beautiful space, my personal opinion is that the character of the original building was lost. Is completely unfortunate that two hundred-year-old beams were thrown to the side as if they were rubbish and burned. The only absolute thing that I can say is thank God that I'm not married to that woman, you can clearly see who wears the pants in that relationship.
I like it. 🙈
her joke about the bathroom window and privacy.."oh i know the postman very well!!"..neither her husband or the presenter laugh..awkward!!!!!
i married a gargoil i should stick your head on the end of the bed, right second weird joke..thats actually narsacissm..im out, judging by the comments im going to get upset by the end anyway if she is going around burning beautiful rustic beams!and martin was leaving his stressful job behind..mmmmm?hope he is ok
It might have been an idea to consult with an architect, or at least listen to George's suggestions. Her result is hideous. No fault of the contractors. They must have had a lot of laughs over the dinner table each night. What a wretched woman.
You could have sold that old wood for quite a bit. It's basically priceless at this point, since modern lumber is so different.
Boy, if these folks got a divorce, I hope the man got his investment out of HER house. Basically he was the bank and had no voice in the design or management of the house. Awful woman!
Apparently they did split
The builders are just balancing on those rafters very brave
horid layout
and horrid furnishings and finishes. the women has no taste.
Any updates... Are they still together...
I doubt that very much
Mount the TV above the fireplace maybe??
One word
WHY???????
Everyone is on the same page here the woman is one spoilt adult and does not no how to shut up, and yes that poor husband I think it was a great escape for him to go back to work.
An accountant does not a decorator be...... such a shame.
She made poor design decisions, after apparently spending a year on it. Plus she’s the sort that won’t ever say she was wrong, and she’s the best, it’s all “my window”.
25:10 yep... Not your problem, it's Claire's! Strange arrangement
What a shamozal!
