My parents didn't teach me how to clean anything and now I'm older, confused, lazy and wish I had a maid. Thank you for your videos. They're helping me overcome my disorder.

Ahhh, poor thing your parents never made you clean anything? My sister and I always had to clean, cook, do laundry, etc. and for some reason our brothers never had to clean anything. We used to get a little annoyed and jealous but we never made a big deal out of it. Now we are all adults, and my 2 brothers live together by themselves and their place is like the nasty apartment in that movie fight club. I watched this video and thought, wow there are people who don't know these things? I read your comment and I realized, oh my god, there are, and there are people I love who don't know these things, Dee Tally my friend, you are like my brother :) haha Dont worry, you will get used to it..... you'll be alright:) I promise

Lol Yes I'm like your brother except I'm a girl :( Laundry is the only thing I ever had to do growing up which is probably why I'm so particular about it... Since I left that comment I've learned sooo much. I actually really like cleaning the bathroom now. The normal cleaning supplies that I was using would give me major headaches so I would never finish and I thought that meant my body just didn't like cleaning, so I stopped trying but now that I use the natural ingredients that she suggested like vinegar and baking powder I can clean the bathroom all the way through with no problem. Also this video came in handy as well and although I still hate cleaning my room it doesn't get nearly as messy as it used to. I also couldn't cook a thing not even white rice but Ive been watching videos on UA-cam and I've now made and mastered an array of dishes and I can turn left overs into brand new meals. lol Im very proud of myself. The laziness still hits me every now and then but I've come a long way. Now I'm watching videos on up keeping the car like doing tune ups and oil changing. Don't know if I'll actually do it (scary getting underneath a car) but its good to know just in case. My next focus will be sewing. Wish me luck !!! Thanks for the encouragement +allyou and thanks for making these videos ***** We can all improve if were dedicated

Oh! hahah You are my sister:) I am so proud of you! From reading your comment you have come a long way, and what is important is you care. Don't beat yourself up for getting lazy, it is good to take a break, you can always do it later:) I don't think I would go under a car either! haha but sewing is a VERY GOOD skill to have, my mother taught me how to sew, crochet, knit, and pretty much most people I know except for some drag queens were never taught and never learned. Also knowing how to cook is probably one of the best life skills to have. I think having knowledge about practical everyday things like cleaning, cooking, sewing is good for me, hahaha I would not want to get my hands dirty or get under a car, but it would be good to know...keep it up let me know how you are doing with sewing:)

I think the most important tip is to start with a clean work space. I take all dirty dishes out of sink. I put dish soap in sink then then on hot water and scrub the sink. I couldn't imagine cleaning dishes in a gross, greasy, leftover food sink lol

Lynn DO NOT add bleach to your dish detergent water! The chemicals in bleach and dish detergent form toxic fines when mixed! I used to do the same thing and it eventually began to irritate my chest and breathing and I never knew why until I learned this. it can be extremely dangerous.

When I have a lot of utensils to clean, I like to clean a glass or mug first, rinse it out and set it aside. Then I wash every utensil, don't rinse them and just place them in the mug. Once I wash all the utensils I just rinse them all at once along with the mug. Saves some water and time

Instead of putting the utensils in a glass, I use a plastic plate. The plate holds a lot more silverware. When I rinse the dishes one by one, I put the plate in the scrubbed up sink and rinse all the dishes over the plate. I do a final rinse on the utensils to make sure the soap is off.

The things I do to make this task shorter and more motivating (I have only one small sink):
    1) Empy the dish rack by putting everything in the cupboards or wherever it goes
    2) Quickly rinse all that is in the sink so that it will be easier to wash later
    3) Completely empty the sink and put the dishes on the sides
    4) Organize the dishes by category: make a stack of plates, then a group of glasses and cups, the group of cutlery (it can go inside a pan or a big bowl), the group of "random" stuff (tupperwares, etc.) and finally the group of pans and bigger dishes. This is the key part: it will allow to better divide the task, make it quicker and to have a better view of the quantity there is to wash, which makes it more motivating (when all the dishes are randomly put in the sink it gives the illusion that there's much more to wash than there really is...)
    5) Clean the plates that I'll progressively stack in the sink (I like starting with those because they're the easiest, but it all comes to preference...)
    6) Rinse the plates and put them on the dish rack (since you have a stack of plates in the sink, the plates waiting to be rinsed will take less and less time with all the water falling on them)
    7) Repeat operations 5 and 6 with every other group (but I do the group of pans and big dishes last because they take too much space in the dish rack. As long as there's space in it, repeat 5 and 6 for the last group. If it really becomes impossible to put anything on top of the rest that is in the dish rack, I immediatly dry the pans after washing them and put them in the cupboards).
Little details that make this chore easier. It still sucks, but it sucks less ^^

Hey bro...I too do the same way...it's best to group the items...
1 tip I do is to clean the counter and make space alongside the sink to place all the pre-treated stuff to let them soak the dishwash liquid...then I begin with plates and bowls and cutlery and immediately place them in dishrack...this clears almost 50% space immediately
Then I take big bowls/pans and put them alongside with washing the biggest ones in the last and boy....the work is all done
Super best tip is to always use baking powder with liquid ....it works like magic
      God bless you bro

Thank you Melissa. Do the plates & glasses first & the bigger stuff after. Least I know I've done that right! 😇

I also have a tip. #1: If you have double sinks, fill sink #1 up with hot water and a few drops of soap inside. Drop all dirty dishes inside. The sink #2 is left empty so as you soap up each dish you can put it in here (sink #2). After you've soaped up/washed the dishes, let the water from the sink #1 drain. Then turn the faucet on luke-warm water and rinse off dishes through a running stream. It saves water since the faucet isn't running the entire time, just at the end when rinsing comes around :)

+Samantha Stevens Hydrogen peroxide is great on carpet stains. Just mix a 50/50 solution of water and hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle. Thoroughly saturate the area where the stain is. Place an old towel over the spot an iron it lifting the spot up into the towel. Note: this does not work on all spots, but beverages and pet droppings it works great.

great video....i obsess about my dishes and what my family eats off of and a lot of people do not know nor care to wash dishes with attention to the details Melissa listed.
    my own tips:
    1) plan how to stack your dry rack (like Tetris) utilize all the space well and everything air dries pretty quickly.
    2) use multi purpose dishes to minimize amount of dishes piled up.....a dish that can be used for dinner or soups or desserts beats having a whole range of plates to serve multiple purposes. and i find it easier to tackle large surface area items versus something that may have a lot of crevices or creases that would take more effort to clean.
great channel and cheers from Ontario!

Tip: in the event that you don't have a rack, use a microfiber towel (or a regular towel if you're on a budget). Place the bowls and glassware down first and then stack the plates against them. It helps the plates dry faster and you can put them away so they don't break. And if want to towel dry the others, you won't have too much to dry after.
I learned this myself back in high school.

When I do my silverware.. I take a straining bowl, after I wash each utensil I throw it in the straining bowl so when I'm done washing them all I run water threw it and it washes them all off at once plus it gives them time to sit soaped up :)

This is GENIUS! I do the same but never thought to use a strainer omg
I’ve been washing dishes for decades and actually love the process. I find it mindless and therapeutic. But that damn silverware.... it’s the devil. A sink with two bowls and a plate looks like it would take about two minutes, but add in a bunch of silverware? Suddenly 45 minutes later.....

  • @AuntieDeb71
    @AuntieDeb71 7 років тому +25

Dishes are a whole lot less daunting if I do them as I cook. I fill up one sink with soap and water, and use the other to water-blast most of the gunk off with the hose thingy. While my guys are filling their plates, they fill mine for me (since there's no room at the counter for all of us anyway) while I load the dishwasher or finish handwashing the prep bowls by the time my meal is plated. As soon as family vacate the counter area, I put the condiments back in the fridge immediately. Nothing left to do at that point but the dishes we're eating from. (And if anyone knows how to make men rinse their dishes and load them into the machine instead of dropping them in the sink or all over the counters, I'm all ears.)
For roasting or frying pans with heavy cooked-on gunk I put a drop or two of soap in, fill the pan with water, and turn the burner on under it so the burnt stuff melts and I don't need to scrub as hard. If I don't clean as I go, it will be worse later and I'll probably just close my eyes and walk on by . I got rid of the dishrack - it took up valuable real estate - and just put the prep bowls & stuff on a microfibre drying pad.

I have a suggestion. How about some videos on small square footage living. For instance I am in a 600 sq ft space with a spacious living room and bedroom 12 x 12 with a huge walk in closet. The bathroom has a full tub and a three ft counter that I wish were in the postage stamp kitchen. It is galley style with a full fridge, stove and dishwasher. The counter space has a dishdrainer, full microwave, toaster oven and my crockpot is used 2-3 times a week using the top of the electric stove for lack of other space. Supposedly there is room for a small tble but it would block access to a small closet sized pantry. My main issue is ;lack of counter space and seating. Right now, it's TV trays and folding chairs! Thanks for helping me enjoy my place!

I have to admit to being a bit obsessive when washing up, and add in an extra stage. First, I remove all the food with hot, running water (using a bit of washing-up liquid if it is extra greasy) THEN wash in hot, sudsy water THEN rinse all the suds off (again with HOT water to zap as many bugs as possible) THEN either drip dry or wipe. This from "Home Comforts" by Cheryl Mendelson, my home-making bible. Love all your videos; I've got so many tips from you, many thanks.

I hate utensils sitting around on the counter or in the sink. They drive me nuts. So I have a nice big cup (ours are from a couple hospital trips) and I have everyone place their sliverware "face down" or the side that goes in your mouth or is pointy down in the cup. Then I will sometimes put some dish soap and a little bit of water in the cup and it makes it easier. I also got a utensil holder for bigger utensils like wooden spoons and knives, etc. It saves a lot of counter space!

If you have two basins, I have a tip for you. This is an alternative to filling the sink with water.
    1. Fill a small, wide-bottom tupperware with 1/6 cup of water and JUST enough soap.
    2. Using your SLOP scruber, remove all the grease+food from your dishes, starting with the cleanest ones (cups+forks).
Stack these dishes as you pre-wash them, starting with the largest diameter bowls on the bottom. The idea is to stack so that they are stable. Same for cups and plates. Also, put the forks in a cup standing up. Make it easier on yourself.
    3. Using a DIFFERENT, clean sponge, dip into the tupperware, using JUST enough soap, thoroughly scrub the dishes, get in all the nooks and crannies*. Stack them as in the previous step.
    4. RINSE the dishes Only a very THIN stream of water is needed for this. Rotate the dish around in your hand as to distribute the water all over. Wash off all the soap. T
--As you rinse, put the dishes in the rack. Nesting them so that the larger items overlap the smaller items, like a russian nesting doll. Like this: >7 or ( Cc
    5. CELEBRATE and ENJOY excellent technique.
Also, change out the soap if you need to. Again, only use as much as is needed. Use your own judgement and think about how much soap is actually needed to clean your dishes.
Use dish wands and bottle brushes to gain more leverage (makes the work easier) and reach into deeper glasses. Or don't buy/use glasses that your hand doesn't fit in.
    * (Or just buy dishes without nooks and crannies/scalloping. Step 0 is buying dishes that are easy to wash.)

When I was little our dishwasher was broken until I was about 12; giving me years of experience of doing the dishes (also becoming the most efficient in my house do wash them by hand).
    My tips would be these:
You don't need a dish rack, instead you can use a towel placed against a wall (lean plates and tall items against the wall) and stand utensils in a pre dried cup.
For loads with small items, use a large bowl that fits in your sink (preferably one that needs to be washed anyway), instead of filling up your whole sink.
Also, keep up on loading and unloading your dishwasher, and wash dishes that are not dishwasher safe right away!
    Organization is key ;)

Ever since I was 4 years old, I have been the sole hand dishwasher. The only time in my life I have operated a dishwasher was on a trip to Europe from the US. Now that I am 4 years shy of half a century 😊, I can attest that I really enjoy washing dishes by hand because it is fun and relaxing. My method is highly unorthodox and most are counter to your video except the one tip - immediately rinse your dishes clean upon finishing with them so food does not stick.
    1. I boil a large pot of sudsy water to wash my dishes and reboil throughout, rinse them under hot running water, and microwave them slightly dry or dip them in a separate pot of boiling water for thorough drying/sanitation. I then dry them with a dishcloth and put the dishes away immediately. If wet, I microwave the dishcloth a few seconds in between to help dry it out.
    2. I rinse/degrease my dishes completely clean with very hot water immediately upon finishing with them, prior to their handwashing with dish detergent even before eating, and right after.
    3. I have sponges, scouring pads, bleach, Fabuloso, Ajax cleanser, Dawn dish detergent, or (Suave) shampoo as a substitute on standby. I wash the dishes with a sponge. I use bleach/Ajax to clean my sink and dishpan. For greasy/stained dishes, I use Fabuloso or Ajax then rinse them before washing. Once the food is transferred to a serving plate, I rinse the dishes immediately coming out of the oven, microwave, and off the burner and use a spoon or scouring pad also while hot to remove any debris. I also add water in the dishes and put them back on the burner to remove stuck-on food and use a spoon or rubber spatula. Off heat, I put the debris into a paper napkin and toss it in a used plastic bread bag. I never put scraps of food directly into a trash bag so my trash stays dry and smell free. I either freeze them in the bread bag before garbage day or toss them contained into the trash. I also put my trash into individual plastic shopping bags that are placed inside the trash bag to keep everything compressed and contained.
    4. I rinse my sponges in hot water and bleach then I heat them in the microwave to kill the germs and place them on the drying rack.
    5. I never fill my sink with water. I fill a separate pot and dishpan and keep the water hot on a low flame or reboil the dishwater so it is constantly hot. My dishwater remains clean throughout the process because I pre-rinse and degrease them with cleaner before they ever enter the steaming dishwater. I don't use gloves and use a good quality dish detergent or shampoo which is gentle enough on the skin while tough on grease. I don't have a need to soak dishes. If you use heated water and proper cleaners that step is not necessary. Most of the time I don't need to scour dishes nor do I usually have stuck-on foods. By rinsing them under hot water immediately off heat, the debris dissolves off.

I believe people rinse dishes in a sink full of water rather than from a running tap because it saves water.. About adding vinegar, I never heard of that.

    • @hwingerrr5680
      @hwingerrr5680 10 років тому +6

TonyHickschick No doubt it saves water, as long as a bit of soapy residue is acceptable. Looking at glasses after they dry off might reveal how much.
It's the method that'd be necessary at camp with water acquired from buckets, but given the availability of plumbing and hot running water, that's carrying conservation to the point where it's not really cleaning fully.

      @TonyHickschick 10 років тому

      ***** I see your point.

A compromise would be to use fresh tap water for the rinse but using a slosh technique of transferring the water back and forth between two cups, one in each hand, to maximize the removal of soap and residue with the least amount of water use. That would save a lot of water compared with having a continual stream from the tap and still get all the soap off.
A faucet with a single lever handle also helps because it allows the water to be quickly turned on and off as needed, compared to faucets with knobs that would have to be left running. Probably very few faucets now with knobs, but there may still be some.

Did you know that the way to clean your garbage disposal is two add a piece of lemon, lime, anything with citrus. Use cold water and turn it on. Also to sharpen your blades you can throw some ice cubes down there as well and let it grind

In the video she picked a glass, washed it, and rinsed it, the same with all the rest, and all the time the water was running. If you wash all the glasses first and then rinse them all one after the other, you only leave the water running half the time.

Utensils...forks, butter knives, spoons. In my kitchen they add up like crazy between my fiance and I. I usually have a big drinking glass in the dirty dishes so I fill that with hot water and try to put every dirty utensil in it to soak. When I clean them, I make organized piles in the rinse sink and use the sprayer to rinse all of them off right in the sink. Alongside my trusty dish rack, I lay out big dish towels on the kitchen table to set dishes on to dry, so I grab a pile of utensils, give them a shake and then lay them out on the towels and continue with the rest of the dishes. When Im done, the utensils are dry enough to put away, and I can just grab a pile and toss them right into their designated spot in the drawer without having to individually go through each one. I'm obsessed with doing dishes. Its therapy for me. And I too have it down to my own science. I'm really anxious to try the vinegar rinse. We use vinegar in the laundry and as a cleaning spray.

This is a trick from my mom. Baked on food or any stuck on food, put a inch of water in pan, put a lid on it. Just a few minutes later, remove the lid and the previously stuck on food will usually wipe right off. It's like magic, works almost every time. My steamer pan went dry during cooking, as soon as I realized added water and the burnt mess just wiped off. Love your tips, I have almost watched all of them and just found them a week ago. Made the cleaners, weed killer and fruit fly catcher. They all work awesome and my husband thinks they are great as well.B-)

Could be build up in your dishwasher, or a clogged line. That's what did mine in finally (although I'm sure it didn't help that it was built in 1978...lol...). In general though yep you get a better clean and rinse when washing by hand.

A good, well maintained/cleaned dishwasher will give better results than you can achieve by hand. I actually take my Tupperware to the office to put it in the dishwasher there, because I could never get it as clean when I wash it by hand.

    • @testnowhehe
      @testnowhehe 8 років тому +1

Unless you change out your dirty water, you should definitely wash utensils after cups. The order should be less greasy to most greasy. If utensils are last...ur basically washing them with the dirt, grease, & grime from pots/pans.
