Lyrics:
Well we all have a face
That we hide away forever
And we take them out and show ourselves
When everyone has gone
Some are satin some are steel
Some are silk and some are leather
They're the faces of the stranger
But we love to try them on
Well, we all fall in love
But we disregard the danger
Though we share so many secrets
There are some we never tell
Why were you so surprised
That you never saw the stranger
Billy Joel's official UA-cam channel features music videos, live performances, interviews, TV appearances and more. Best known for his first hit song, 'Piano Man', in 1973, Billy has written and recorded thirty- three Top 40 hits in the United States. He is a six-time Grammy Award winner, a 23-time Grammy nominee and one of the world's best-selling artists of all time, having sold over 150 million records worldwide. Billy Joel is the sixth-best-selling recording artist and the third-best-selling solo artist in the United States.
Billy Joel has always had the gift of writing songs that reveal deep, previously unspoken truths about the human character. I love him.
Well put.
I like your suggestion. But to be fair: Epicurus, Plato, Socrates, Aristotle, Descartes, Hume, Locke, Spinoza, De Beauvoir, Arendt, Nussbaum, Anscombe, Wollstonecraft...Shakespeare, Miller, Auden, Plath, Angelou, Mofolo, Achebe, Dickinson, Dickens, Frost, Luther King, Keats, Fanon, Yeates, James Brown, Gil Scott Heron..Mozart/Da Ponte, Wagner, Schubert...Too many to consider, have 'spoken' as much of the 'truths' of human nature as anyone could wish to consider in a lifetime. And that's not even mentioning the great artists in other artforms, let alone artists of Asian, Middle Eastern or other backgrounds. Billy Joel did popular culture a favour by so deftly articulating 'truths' about humans, I'll agree with you on that :-)
SO true!!
true... he is one of a kind...

no auto tune and no playback whatsoever. we need this backk!
A lot of people compare Billy Joel and Elton John. Both are great. No quetion about that matter. But for me Billy Joel's songs are far far more appealing.
Yeah so I have several "favorite" artists but if I had to pick a goat Billy Joel is it
Elton sings to fans. Billy sings to people.
I’m still standing is my only favorite Elton John song, so I agree with you.
(1) Based on these on these lyrics Billy Joel would have made an incredible psychologist (2) How amazing is his band. That guitarist is dropping the dirty NYC funk big time.
July 2024...and this shit still hits my memories growing up....
Right on man!
It's unbelievable how good the 1970s Billy Joel Band sounded live. They were one of the best live performance music groups ever.
GermanOperaSinger i couldnt agree with any statement in any youtube coment section more that that statement. I was born a decade and a half too late. I hate almost all the modern garbage but i could listen to 70s Joel live performance all day and love going to bed whistling Zanzibar!
He still has most of the same core band too.
Absolutely true. Pretty ridiculous that this is SO good. The album and the song are both a couple of my favorites of all time.
at his peak
Yes my GOP
I’m still blown away by his ability to whistle like that on cue.
One of his best songs
I was blown away a while back when I realised he could whistle it a real art form not utilised enough in modern factory produced time of music making
YES!! He is the best writer music wise, his lyrics are the best & never stray off topic, he can Fuckn PLAY THAT PIANO like no other, his voice is always impeccably on key but he can really whistle like as well, like WTF........ anything else Billy haha LOVE HIM!!
My Dad could whistle like that.

@@thetruth72667 He also plays the Harmonica very well. If you watch and listen to Piano Man video on UA-cam, you'll see and hear what I mean.
Incredible we dont have this kind of talent anymore😢 but maybe im just old?
we do, it's just not on popular radio. Same thing was said from the Big Band generation towards rock and roll itself... Music evolves as time passes.
I really like the opening and close of this song it fades into and out of your life just a stranger does
now thats observent!;)
It's the best of this song
Nailed it 100%
Right on brother
@@floydkiedis3807 A true modern day masterpiece., so haunting.
Billy Joel 🥹🙌👏👏👏 Beautiful memories . Greetings From Argentina 🇦🇷👋
it's amazing that people this talented actually exist in this world. the man is an absolute fucking genius beyond comprehension.. it's not fair how good he is
Jones I know of him because when I was learning to play the piano, I had to play some of his songs.
Even more amazing when you realize he actually write *all* of his own songs.
Talent like his exists in this world but it's rare.
Jonesうずまきパット様 he was accepted to Columbia University!
How did we go from this and end up with some depressing sh*t called rap?
Probably my favorite song from Billy Joel. The whole "The Stranger" album is great. One of his best pieces of work. This was when he really experimented and pushed his boundaries for song writing and composition.
The is the best song ever to exist in this world
It's crazy how close this is to the studio version. He killed it!
It’s better than the studio version, imo❤

You don,t get better than that!
LOVE his cue to end at 4:12
Great whistling talent! Marvelous song!

@@tylerchatman67 you are so right I go to the garden at least 5 times a year to see him I just recently retired to Florida I will still go see him 2 or 3 time's a year at the garden best song writer ever and a great pianist
This riff is the truth.
It honestly doesn't get much better than Billy Joel
Greg Cluff paul McCartney
vladimyr morris no
Bob Dylan?
Sir......✨⚡ E l t o n J o h n ⚡✨
Billy Joel is better than Paul McCartney alone. With the beatles i agree they are better than Billy but they were 4. Same with Lennon
Thanks for that excellent song Sylvester Stallone, glad to see you stand in for Billy on this one it was great.
=))
Che talento .... Niente è impossibile per Piano Man ... Per lui la musica un gioco facile 👏🎹👏🎹👏
I really think Billy Joel is underrated by modern times. He should really be known by all generations of all ages. He may be big for the old gen, but for my new modern gen. I think no much people know about him
Artists like Billy and Elton are iconic for a reason. This live performance as a 28 year old is simply flawless.
+T.A. Rugg The difference is Billy wrote all his own music. His singing ability, and writing talent are unmatched. Perfect storm really.
+T.A. Rugg Ahhh.....so wonderful to know that the young ones appreciate the classics. I graduated high school in 1977 when this was.
Kim Moore At 53 I'm not so sure how "young" I am, but thanks anyway. :)
Doug Russell exactly, and Billy has spoken about how difficult it was for him to write lyrics... I'd greatly appreciate it if some Joel fans would check out my live piano/vocal cover versions of ALLENTOWN and VIENNA, which you can find by clicking on my channel. Thanks and please pardon the self promotion.
Difficult, because he puts so much heart into them.
I was born in 86 and I love good music, Billy Joel is one of thee most talented and unique artist/musician of our time. Bless you Billy Joel sir!! and bless you all. Music was good up to the 90s. Thankfully we got recording tech
The intro of this song is nothing else more.
Incredible songwriter!!
The great thing about his music is that both live and studio versions sound the same... That's greatness folks!
I think this is the best live version of a song I've ever heard.
Billy had it all, genius songwriter, singing playing.
Looking back at this as a piano player who covers Billy, I realize how he was so far advanced than many others… Amazing…
Was at this show, great seats too. The man is so talented, there really isn't to many words you can say about him. I worked with him when he was playing keyboards for a group called "The Hassles" in the late 60's at a club in Long Island called The Action House. Our band played that night too. It was very common for club owners to book 2 bands for one night so they had live music all night. 45 minute sets.
And why should we believe you?
This is honestly my favorite billie Joel song. I love the rhythm, his voice, the guitar part is awesome and the lyrics tell a story. I just love everything about this song.
I say the same!
This song and also, This Is My Life
You could say that about most of his top hits of the 70s, before he connected with Christy Brinkley. Piano Man, Just the Way You Are, Honesty, The Stranger, New York State of Mind, Scenes from an Italian Restaurant, Goodnight Saigon, Allentown, and so many more ...

Holy shit, this man is a national treasure! Love Billy Joel!
My favorite Billy Joel song, and I'm a fellow Long Islander who saw him live at Nassau Coliseum in the 1980's. :) Love the lyrics, so brilliant.
This song rocks. The changes are incredible
A true talent! Music and lyrics!!!
His voice is AMAZING live... You can't get this kind of quality live anymore! Billy Joel is so talented!
Legend...what a talent of playing and amazing voice
I'm madly in love with this kid.
2021 and still loving this. So hauntingly beautiful. ❤️🎶
May 9, Happy 70th birthday, Billy. Thanks for all the amazing music.
One of the best songs of all time. I am so lucky I finally get to see Billy Joel in concert this month at madison square garden
It will be great. I saw him myself in 2015.
This live performance is easily 10 times better than the recording studio version.
The Stranger album was the first music album I bought. Thank you, Billy, for loving Japan!
lots of talent on display. "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" probably my favorite with all the transitions and lyrical content. Billy had a uniquely special product in the late '70s that he and his group created. that era of singer-songwriter was special
Billy you is special😘😍💖💞💞
This is just too amazing... no words for this. PLATINUM STANDARD.
One of my favorite artists EVER!!! I love you Billy.
Billy Joel's a champ!
Genius. When it comes to actual song writing I can't think of anyone lyrically better.

Wow the whistling is bang on as the recorded version great song live well impressed
Hey he's just as good as it gets and it's ny
I am generally not a big fan of whistling...but he makes me like it!!!!
It was the age of the song as a story and the Beatles, Elvis, Elton John (with Bernie Taupin) and the amazing Billy Joel all did it best. The generational continuity proves not only their talent but their relevance in today's world as well. My son and daughters are in their 30's and 40's and are big fans, as are my grandchildren. I hope all of you young people who wished they were born earlier will realize how this music some written 40-50 years ago is very much available for you to enjoy.
The whistle outtro, the rim shots, and the ride cymbal...
I can see it like a movie I've watched a thousand times:
Camera following, the hero walking down a dark and deserted NYC street, jacket over one shoulder, cigarette in the other hand, light rain, one long shadow slowly stretching from the puddle of one streetlight to the next, like Spiderman swinging in ultra slo-mo.
The hero looks up for a second and nods hello to guy on the fire escape 4 floors up, who's stopped playing his saxophone out of respect as the hero passes by.
On the last note, the camera stops just as the hero steps on his cigarette and turns a corner.
Fade out
[Verse 1]
Well, we all have a face
That we hide away forever
And we take them out and show ourselves
When everyone has gone
Some are satin, some are steel
Some are silk and some are leather
They're the faces of a stranger
But we'd love to try them on
[Chorus]
Well, we all fall in love
But we disregard the danger
Though we share so many secrets
There are some we never tell
Why were you so surprised
That you never saw the stranger?
Did you ever let your lover
See the stranger in yourself?
[Post Chorus]
Don't be afraid to try again
Everyone goes south every now and then
You've done it
Why can't someone else?
You should know by now
You've been there yourself
[Verse 2]
Once I used to believe
I was such a great romancer
Then I came home to a woman
That I could not recognize
When I pressed her for a reason
She refused to even answer
It was then I felt the stranger
Kick me right between the eyes
[Chorus]
Well, we all fall in love
But we disregard the danger
Though we share so many secrets
There are some we never tell
Why were you so surprised
That you never saw the stranger?
Did you ever let your lover
See the stranger in yourself?
[Post Chorus]
Don't be afraid to try again
Everyone goes south every now and then
You've done it
Why can't someone else?
You should know by now
You've been there yourself
[Verse 3]
You may never understand
How the stranger is inspired
But he isn't always evil
And he is not always wrong
Though you drown in good intentions
You will never quench the fire
You'll give in to your desire
When the stranger comes along
Amazing.....this guy!!! Hard to say what's better....his lyrics or his musical talent.....BOTH FOR SURE...but the lyrics of this song!!!!

Long Island Legend. This is my favorite tune of his, hauntingly beautiful.
Billy is pure talent
Amazing
lol! This song is so spot on. I have loved this music since it was released. My mother so much loved 'Just The Way You Are'. Thank you!
One of Billy Joel's best songs... At first, it touches the soul, then electrifies the mind and body !!! Impossible to listen without dancing!
Billy
oh my god its a old song, but i fallen in love with this song in 2017, its has been 40 years , isnt too late maybe 😂😍
Unbelievable singing.
I was just one years old when he did this song, but I love it just the same
Temazo de Billy Joel
Billy Joel is groovy to the bones!
Just fucking brilliant! This guy kicks ass!
Es hermosa muy buenos recuerdos 💖❤️👍
Every one goes south every now and then ..amazing !!

An excellent song! I took a psychology class about personality in college and we even briefly discussed this song. I loved it long before then though.
😎
What did they say about this song?
Deine Musik begleitet mich fast mein ganzes Leben. Sehr gut gemacht. Danke dafür.

Impressive as always Billy. You were gifted with piano skills, song writing ability and vocals. You're a complete package. Thank you for your contribution in music.
Nessuno completo e brillante come lui negli ultimi 40 anni ...
One of a kind. Thank you for decades of great music Billy Joel.
+Fred Stuckmann amen
Shure Unidyne 548 mic - classic 70's. Brilliantly articulate bass line here as well.
All these years I thought there was a black woman on background vocals but it's Billy Joel.
LOL. That’s hilarious, Hector.
This has such a french melancholy about it, deep song, that shows billy is a profound man, not just an amazing melodic talent
These lyrics speak to me in another level... And let's not get started on the music itself. Amazing.
