Lyrics:
Well, we all have a face
That we hide away forever
And we take them out
And show ourselves when everyone has gone
Some are satin, some are steel
Some are silk and some are leather
They're the faces of a stranger
But we'd love to try them on
Well, we all fall in love
But we disregard the danger
Though we share so many secrets
There are some we never tell
Why were you so surprised
That you never saw the stranger
Did you ever let your lover
See the stranger in yourself
Don't be afraid to try again
Everyone goes south every now and then
You've done it
Why can't someone else
You should know by now
You've been there yourself
Once I used to believe
I was such a great romancer
Then I came home to a woman
That I could not recognize
When I pressed her for a reason
She refused to even answer
It was then I felt the stranger
Kick me right between the eyes
Well, we all fall in love
But we disregard the danger
Though we share so many secrets
There are some we never tell
Why were you so surprised
That you never saw the stranger
Did you ever let your lover
See the stranger in yourself
Don't be afraid to try again
Everyone goes south every now and then
You've done it
Why can't someone else
You should know by now
You've been there yourself
You may never understand
How the stranger is inspired
But he isn't always evil
And he is not always wrong
Though you drown in good intentions
You will never quench the fire
You'll give in to your desire
When the stranger comes along
Watching him play with that giddy fervour at 1:48 - 1:54 gives me goosebumps every time. If you ever wondered exactly who THE man is, I think it's Billy Joel.
Whoa! So cool!!
Exactly.
"man"
What’s crazy is he just hammers the keys like a drummer and never plays any clams.
It’s mind boggling actually.
I highly recommend the entire album
Man the band was rockin here. And Billy with the youthful vocals and the piano playing. Can't get enough.
One of the best songs in the 70's. Thank you Billy Joel for making the dreadful drive to high school in my dad's pickup truck a delight when this song and others on this album blasted forth from the 8 track through the ancient speakers.
He's a fucking genius
This video should have at least 100 million views. What is going on? BJ is the GOAT! No one comes close to his music catalog and longevity. Just about everyone of his songs is enjoyable to listen to multiple times. They just don't get old and stay fresh after almost 50 years in some cases! This man is simply undervalued, under recognized and under viewed. The millennials and gen z generations have not opened up or even discovered BJ perhaps because he didn't sell out to ads and marketing taking advantage of his celebrity status to sell some schlocky items. Please get this video and others out to people, especially those younger ones who unfortunately have such lousy music to listen to these days. Come on now, just go and see the top songs on UA-cam music or Spotify, most of it is plain garbage that can't even be called music and we know most was not written by the so called artist.
The songs from the 70’s
I’m in High School And Billy Joel Is My Life No Pun Intended
I never understood what the big deal with Billy Joel was.....Bald ,old man wasn't too attractive to me even though I'm a man. I knew only Uptown Girl and I preferred West life's version.
It was about 2-3 years ago that while watching the show 'The Boys' , I came to learn more about him and even still I wasn't that drawn into him other than the song "You're only Human" . Then, I started listening to him more and he's now my favourite pianist-singer. I think lots of his songs are a bit too American that I can't relate to but I like the theme of them...take Allentown for example.
im 22 and bj is definitely one of my favs
He is god but not the goat. Elton john, the Beatles, Elvis and few others have a best catalog.
This is such a great song. I gather he played it in Japan just recently, but for the life of me, I don't know why he doesn't play it live more often!
He is undoubtedly the most intelligent artist.... His music makes sense even after 45+ years!
When todays young generation questions what real musicians are just show them this 😎
The bass line in this song is just incredible.
Show me a BJ song where the bass line is not just incredible.
Bro it's like 1 note every measure
@@jamiepasquariello2652 It really isn’t tho
That was an amazing performance. 250 concerts a year. Yikes. He even did this one with a broken left thumb. I was actually at that NY concert. It was all amazing. Nothing like live concerts hands down. Sure beats any of the garbage today. But there is new talent even now. We will see. Hope someone can step up to the plate.
Damn, had no idea he played with a broken thumb, you can see it in the way he plays in this performace but aside from that the sound is perfect
@@joerahme9030 he was in a motorcycle accident He broke his left thumb in the Crash Yet that dosent stop the piano man
Love this tune, Especially the whistling parts.
You may never understand
How the stranger is inspired
But he isn't always evil
And he is not always wrong ❤
@@BillyJoel-mv1qf I will go out on a limb here and suggest that the real Billy Joel knows the difference between been and being. 🙂
こんなにカッコ良くピアノを弾く人はいません。
This song always makes me feel the shivers...that chorus is divine!
I love you BILLY JOEL❤
2 hours ago? Looking good Billy!
love that this has a more raw rough sound
演奏してるとこ見ると、哀愁の歌というより、なんか楽しく聴こえてくる。はは!
Thank you David!!(Lead guitar)
One of my favorite Billy songs. ♥️
Goin crazy on that triangle
Great singer xx
It's New York State Law, if you're a resident of Nassau or Suffolk Counties you are required to love Billy Joel. And I gladly comply with such regulations
Great song - his lyrics always seem to be inspired by his own observations on life. And I love the contrasting intro and ending!
Fly on the wall writing at its finest I’m so nerdy for it!
ピアノやばい。歌もやばい。アレンジもやばい。もうやばい。最高や。
One of the most critically underrated artists of all time. Ya know, despite selling over 200 million albums....
All I want for Christmas is to see Billy Joel sing this live
I heard somewhere that Billy will probably never play this again due to his bandmates making stupid faces and he can’t help but crack up during the whistling parts.
@@brendanlynch4628 I saw that too. Hate the band for that. Great musicians however. Thanks for replying.
@@brendanlynch4628 he still plays it from time to time
this song gives me chills every time. when i was about 9 or 10 years old, i had just discovered billy joel. I saw a CD in the mall with the stranger on it, and asked my grandpa to buy it for me. the following day, we went on our annual vacation to wildwood, NJ (we still do this to this day) and i played the CD the entire ride. I knew the biggest hits like movin out and just the way you are. my grandpa introduced me to “Scenes from an italian restaurant” as well as this masterpiece. I am 15 now and i still absolutely love this song and will forever associate it with the amazing times i had on vacation with my grandpa.
Wow!! You really are awesome Billy Joel😘👏💖💋

The guy going to town on the triangle symbol is actually pretty funny!!
日本に来て欲しいです
生で聴きたい!!
Very noice! Always been a fan of this concert. If only the VHS hadn't cut 8-or so songs out of the set - similar to how Live at Shea cut out 10 songs 😞 - But he's Billy Joel and Billy Joel is Billy Joel and can just do what Billy Joel does 😁
Haven't heard this in years.
I played 3x in a row.
Hit the subscribe button too.
He is such an AMAZING song writer.
TONS of great lyrics&music.
Update: 6x in a row.
Update #2
@ Work today I COULD NOT get it out of my head for 6!! Hours.
I had to play "guess the song" lyrics games with coworkers for the Stranger to temporarily vanish.
So here we go again... Lol
Most definitely agree. I would argue he is up there at the top 3 greatest songwriters of all time.
Excellent piano intro!
The Rock 'n Roll era was full of shining stars, Billy Joel was a supernova. I really appreciate a good whistler. Today's music is a hollow shell compared to this.
Couldn’t agree more
what kind of piano is he playing, it doesn't sound acoustic at all
JoeJoe Baldwin. But who knows what the setup is to mix it
Rhodes
That's often the case for Billy Joels live recordings. I guess it has something to do with how they mix it. In this case, it may also be the old tape that interferes the sound.
@@aheendwhz1 I really really like these types of sounds that had Billy's pianos in concerts of past years, because they make the live sound particular, distinctive and obviously beautiful to hear!
このLIVEのストレンジャーが一番好き🥰ピアノを叩くように弾いてるのが良いですね。指をケガしてるみたいだけど😰
Please upload your videos in Russia 1987 concert (in Leningrad)
1:49 dang look at his piano playing here
He’s like “Yeah I can jam with my two fingers!
That’s Billy Joel
@john tash you didnt have to write that.
How does he whistle like that
very carefully ! lol
Echo filter.
Talent.
what a beautiful song🎷
이 곡은 빌리 조얼의 정체성이 잘 드러나는 곡: 발라더인 동시에 록커.
My Man KILLIN' it on that triangle!
Capolavoro assoluto
This song was way way way ahead of its time.
音がリズムが声が全て格好いい。
I fucking love this song. 03:17 triangle dude is pivotal to this performance
Il più completo songwriter di tutti i tempi .... Da giovane poi era fenomenale .... Talento musicale smisurato
Who else spotted the virtuoso Triangle playing ? hahaha
He killed it
Yeah, mark Rivera is the best triangle player. Oh he plays the saxophone pretty decently too😂
When you wonder what good music is, now you know the answer.
I love how you can hear the tape wobble and flutter on this
Many years ago, having grown up with most of the produce of Billy's middle career years (Nylon Curtain, Innocent Man) playing in the background, I came to discover his early stuff thanks to the first Greatest Hits album. In the face of a personal heartbreak, "The Stranger" somehow spoke to me. I think I would have been without hope if not for this song. The Stranger by Billy Joel literally saved my life.
Still cant believe he can whistle that high lol
Billy Joel is a very talented sing a song writer and piano man.❤
We strictly do 80s Joel music sir!
Billy Joel Hicksville Boy who made it to the top of the mountain.....way to go kid.....
2:05- 2:25 is heartbreakingly beautiful. One of my favorites.
He’s playing that piano like a boxer in a title fight.
Perfection.
uncut gem brought me here , credit to the safadie bros
I remember the first time I heard this song. It was late 1991. I had bought the Billy Joel: The Ultimate Collection box set. I was listening to the Greatest Hits: Vols One and Two for the first time. When I first heard The Stranger, I heard the whistle at the beginning, followed by the guitar. I thought it was great.
I love me some Billy Joel..all day and all night!!💃😘🎤
My pals and I saw Billy play in 75ish in a small place in Nassau County when The Stranger just came out. I can’t recall the name of it nor do I have a clear memory of the event but I wonder if this is it. It was kind of a night club but big enough for maybe 200 people. Anyone know if this is it and what the name of the place is?
This is from a concert in 82.
The whistling so innovative!
Where would we all be without this strong male figure in music? We'd be right here.
@@leroybrown5726 The trouble with using double negatives is they get all tangled up. To make things clear, we here at the big table love Billy Joel.
@@therealpatriarchy oh my mistake

Thanks,I really do appreciate you been my fan and I will love to hear from you
Best Billy Joel song. It came on the radio when I was driving one night and was captivated by that whistling.
Nice camera work! and this is the best "stranger "I've ever seen .his best performance.
🎵❤🎵
OH! An upload!
This is just stunningly good. I mean wow. Truly one of the best ever. Absolutely amazing.
I just noticed in 4:19 that he had a bandage all this time! Hoe can he play so well when he's in pain?!
I believe that was from when he had his motorcycle accident.
Ye couple of months after his motorcycle accident, it delayed the release of The Nylon Curtain and this corresponding tour I think
西大寺高校、山本茂男先生、ビリージョエルを、紹介していただいて、ありがとうございました。
The studio version of this is on my Halloween playlist for my high school class. Lyrics can be pretty spooky, in a thematic sort of way!
If you change the speed of this song to 1.25 times, it becomes an exciting song
But at normal speed it isn't?
This song is so beautiful 🧿🙏🏼❤️
Billy is the MAN
Sure I have heard this one before on a tape of mine
Legend

What a band
トライアングルがこんなに素敵な楽器だとは思わなんだ😮
Genius piano man! 🎹
The triagle man is killing it
He spent a few years honing those chops in Vegas (I believe...) using the stage name Bill Martin. Building songs and experience....."Piano Man" tells that story.... but bottom line? He is one SCARY songwriter/pianist. I like Elton John, but England can keep him, We got Billy.
William Martin Joel - America's Beethoven
Sounds awesome!
Were the crowd super imposed? Seen livelier funerals.
What year is this?
I'm pretty sure the Live From Long Island VHS was from 1982. I had it when I was a kid!
EDIT: According to this it was 1983 - www.videocollector.co.uk/billy-joel---live-from-long-island/31828
@@LawrenceAkers I think you are right at 1982 though, I watched this concert a million times on HBO.
Correction: I found my cassette where I recorded it from HBO December 9, 1982 at 10pm EST live broadcast.
@@timmmahhhh I hired this VHS from the video library, copied it and then played it to absolute death. I wished it was released on DVD as I'd happily buy it. There is a cheap (suspected bootleg) version on DVD on Ebay which I've purchased but it is such a terrible transfer. I really wish SONY would go ahead and release it as part of their legacy offerings.
@wayouttatune2 Yeah I thought it started in 1975, just looked it up and it's actually Nov 1972.
This is called talent, take notes Taylor swift
此の時代のビリージョエルさんロッキーバルボア(シルベ…・スター…さん)にそっくり。
