    Lyrics:
Well, we all have a face
    That we hide away forever
    And we take them out
And show ourselves when everyone has gone
Some are satin, some are steel
Some are silk and some are leather
They're the faces of a stranger
But we'd love to try them on
Well, we all fall in love
    But we disregard the danger
Though we share so many secrets
There are some we never tell
    Why were you so surprised
That you never saw the stranger
Did you ever let your lover
    See the stranger in yourself
Don't be afraid to try again
Everyone goes south every now and then
    You've done it
    Why can't someone else
    You should know by now
    You've been there yourself
    Once I used to believe
I was such a great romancer
Then I came home to a woman
    That I could not recognize
When I pressed her for a reason
    She refused to even answer
It was then I felt the stranger
Kick me right between the eyes
Well, we all fall in love
    But we disregard the danger
Though we share so many secrets
There are some we never tell
    Why were you so surprised
That you never saw the stranger
Did you ever let your lover
    See the stranger in yourself
Don't be afraid to try again
Everyone goes south every now and then
    You've done it
    Why can't someone else
    You should know by now
    You've been there yourself
    You may never understand
    How the stranger is inspired
    But he isn't always evil
And he is not always wrong
Though you drown in good intentions
You will never quench the fire
You'll give in to your desire
    When the stranger comes along

One of the best songs in the 70's. Thank you Billy Joel for making the dreadful drive to high school in my dad's pickup truck a delight when this song and others on this album blasted forth from the 8 track through the ancient speakers.

This video should have at least 100 million views. What is going on? BJ is the GOAT! No one comes close to his music catalog and longevity. Just about everyone of his songs is enjoyable to listen to multiple times. They just don't get old and stay fresh after almost 50 years in some cases! This man is simply undervalued, under recognized and under viewed. The millennials and gen z generations have not opened up or even discovered BJ perhaps because he didn't sell out to ads and marketing taking advantage of his celebrity status to sell some schlocky items. Please get this video and others out to people, especially those younger ones who unfortunately have such lousy music to listen to these days. Come on now, just go and see the top songs on UA-cam music or Spotify, most of it is plain garbage that can't even be called music and we know most was not written by the so called artist.

I never understood what the big deal with Billy Joel was.....Bald ,old man wasn't too attractive to me even though I'm a man. I knew only Uptown Girl and I preferred West life's version.
It was about 2-3 years ago that while watching the show 'The Boys' , I came to learn more about him and even still I wasn't that drawn into him other than the song "You're only Human" . Then, I started listening to him more and he's now my favourite pianist-singer. I think lots of his songs are a bit too American that I can't relate to but I like the theme of them...take Allentown for example.

Nothing like live concerts hands down. Sure beats any of the garbage today. But there is new talent even now. We will see. Hope someone can step up to the plate.

this song gives me chills every time. when i was about 9 or 10 years old, i had just discovered billy joel. I saw a CD in the mall with the stranger on it, and asked my grandpa to buy it for me. the following day, we went on our annual vacation to wildwood, NJ (we still do this to this day) and i played the CD the entire ride. I knew the biggest hits like movin out and just the way you are. my grandpa introduced me to “Scenes from an italian restaurant” as well as this masterpiece. I am 15 now and i still absolutely love this song and will forever associate it with the amazing times i had on vacation with my grandpa.

The studio version of this is on my Halloween playlist for my high school class. Lyrics can be pretty spooky, in a thematic sort of way!

He spent a few years honing those chops in Vegas (I believe...) using the stage name Bill Martin. Building songs and experience....."Piano Man" tells that story.... but bottom line? He is one SCARY songwriter/pianist. I like Elton John, but England can keep him, We got Billy.

I'm pretty sure the Live From Long Island VHS was from 1982. I had it when I was a kid!
EDIT: According to this it was 1983 - www.videocollector.co.uk/billy-joel---live-from-long-island/31828

@@LawrenceAkers I think you are right at 1982 though, I watched this concert a million times on HBO.
Correction: I found my cassette where I recorded it from HBO December 9, 1982 at 10pm EST live broadcast.

@@timmmahhhh I hired this VHS from the video library, copied it and then played it to absolute death. I wished it was released on DVD as I'd happily buy it. There is a cheap (suspected bootleg) version on DVD on Ebay which I've purchased but it is such a terrible transfer. I really wish SONY would go ahead and release it as part of their legacy offerings.

@wayouttatune2 Yeah I thought it started in 1975, just looked it up and it's actually Nov 1972.
