Nice, clear instruction for doing a v-neck tee-shirt. Thank you! I successfully made one after watching your video, however I opted to make a more narrow opening for the v, so I surmised that I should use a steeper angle than 45 degrees at the v. It worked! I’m very pleased.
Melly thanks for this video - I have referred to it as I put on a v-neck bank. So helpful. I actually hand basted the v part before sewing. It did not turn out perfect but the fabric was very light so eager to try it again. Thank you for your time in sharing your sewing experience!
I've been sewing for about 35 years, only cotton and cotton blends, and would like to try knits. I'm a new subscriber since watching a couple of your videos.
With your serger---will you please please do lots of tutorials/or even a big playlist of projects for serger owners---how to add decor to projects using a serger---quick refashions in under an hour ---quick projects to make using the serger in under an hour---Love your work---Thankssssss so much for all you do---You're awesome! Blessings, E.
Thank you for this video. I didn't realize that I hadn't watched it and you gave me this link from your hemming knits video. I Can now use my cover stitch machine.
I love that you showcased a cover machine! I don't see that at all in tutorials and I primarily sew with knits and use a twin needle. I love the finish much more than a zig zag stitch. Soon I'll have one!
I wished I would have watched your video on how to put on a v-neck band. My Halloween top came out unwearable! :( Your video provided in-depth instructions that I greatly appreciate and needed! I will try again!
Thank you for video. I was hoping to see an up close camera angle when you pinned and sewed v-neck. I'm a complete novice at this. Forgive my question, but are you sewing band to the right side of the shirt and flipping it inside when complete or the opposite?!? I can't tell from your video, nor anyone else's for that matter. Thank you.
Because a single needle sewing machine can pivot at the point of the V. I may go back and serge necklines after, but I find it easier to sew V necks with a sewing machine.
This one has a pattern piece, so I don't remember the measurements. A 2 inch wide piece folded in half is 1 inch, then take the 1/2 seam allowance off of that and you'd have 1/2 inch finished width.
Thank you so much. I never seem to get a V Neck just right. Can you tell me how to measure the band length. I know 85% is the overall size but with the cross over V... well I'm confused.
Hello Melly. please can you advise me on knit fabric. i am just starting to learn how to sew and bought some knit fabric online. it was so thin and curled the minuet you cut it. i found it very difficult to handle. plus i am making for a young man so would like the T-shirt to wash well and last. i have know idea what to ask or look for. Thank you. x
thanks for this!. I just got my serger so now I have a new project to try. Will Mr Sews appear in another video?. He was such a good sport in the other video.
the weight of the knit fabric you're using looks like what I want to use. Can you tell me what the fabricf is called, and if there is an online source for it please?
I honestly don't remember what I was using in this video, but this video shows types of knit fabrics mellysews.com/understanding-knit-fabrics-fabric-types/ and this video is some of my favorite places to shop mellysews.com/7-great-online-fabric-stores-buy/
I'm wondering y everyone sews the sleeves and side seams before the neckline. Wouldnt it be easier to work the neck while the front and back can be set down flat?
@@Mellysews Maybe fray was the wrong term. I just thought the shirt is so otherwise perfect; ie your seam finishes on the hem and sleeves are done, why would you leave a raw edged neckline? It' looks gorgeous btw. Well done!!
@@montyollie Again, because it doesn't fray, the edges don't need to be finished. Adding some other technique to the raw edges wouldn't contribute anything beside aesthetics in the best case and might overwork the knit fabric and ruin the project in the worst case.
Just be aware it is NOT free at all, they are scamming people into paying a fee for all access pass to get a so called free pattern. In my country this is illegal and screams scammer. Many other good free Tshirt patterns out there
Although I do appreciate a handcrafted t, how in the world could I justify all that time and effort when I can get t's for $5 on sale. I cannot compete with that price point when comparing the supplies and time it would cost me to make it handmade. :o( - anyway thank you for another great tutorial.
I agree Melissa, you can get cheap t shirts all day long, but that's exactly what you get, cheap. I have made t shirts and have bought "inexpensive" t shirts, and I always get compliments on my made shirts, because I put a little extra interesting detail. By the way, I have the Janome Cover Pro 2000cpx, Baby Lock Imagine serger and Husqvarna Viking Sapphire 960q sewing machine and I love them all. I sew a lot of knits and the cover stitch machine is invaluable!! Love your videos!

Yes, different Vs would have different angles.
Thank you for an excellent tutorial. It is really clear and precise. Just made a t-shirt for the first time!
Glad it was helpful!
Going to sew my first v-neck t this week, this is so helpful.
Have fun!
Thank you for your content, very clear, concise and helpful. 😊
Glad it was helpful!
Such a great tutorial. The 3-way comparison in "real time" is wonderfully executed.
Thank you!!! 👏🏻❤️

Lightweight fabric can be the trickiest!
This is such a great tutorial, it's crystal clear, thanks. I wanna try a vneck tshirt for pregnancy, I hope it'll work. 🙂
Have fun sewing!
Love your teaching style. I'm going to make this shirt. Looks like a wardrobe basic.
Thank you!
Thank you for the lesson on these machines! I always wanted to know how they work,

Fantastic video. You answered all my questions. Love your pace too. Thanks for not boring us with every seam. You’ve got a new subscriber!

Thank you for showing all three machines together.

Another great tutorial for a beginner. You might have even sold a cover stitch machine. 😁

You sew it so that the seam allowances end up inside the shirt.
Thx sew much !😉👗
I’m curious - why did you use a sewing machine instead of the serger to attach the v neck band?
Because a single needle sewing machine can pivot at the point of the V. I may go back and serge necklines after, but I find it easier to sew V necks with a sewing machine.
I find that when I put the sleeve under, the feed-dogs help me ease the sleeve fabric into the armhole.
:)
Yes they do.
thank you!

I love your vídeo, thank you!!!.

Thanks for this, really helpful. I have been nervous about attaching a v neck band, but feel ready to give a go now.
Thanks for watching!
How wide did you cut the strip for your neckband? It looked to be about 2” wide, which with a 1/2” seam allowance, would leave a 1” band.
You'd just add the width of the band to the length to do a crossover style.

Hi Melly. Do you cut your neckband on the bias or cross grain? I watched your other video on neckbands. Not sure on v-neck. Thank you. Rhonda
for v necks usually on the straight grain because they don’t curve as much.
Ah, makes sense. Thank you!
What percent stretch do you recommend for this pattern? Should the neck band be more stretchy than the rest?
At least 25%
thanks for this!. I just got my serger so now I have a new project to try. Will Mr Sews appear in another video?. He was such a good sport in the other video.
LOL! I'm not sure; definitely not for a while if he does since it's football season right now.
What is the seam allowance on the neckband please?
1/2 inch
thank you thank you for your explosions on all of this. but can you use serger on v-neck to finish it?
You can, but it can be tricky to get into the point of the V with a serger.
Is the free pattern still available? Thanks for the great tutorial!
All the details in the post linked in the video description.

You can always try it both ways and stick with whichever method you prefer.
I'm curious about the raw edges on the V. Were they not coverstitched or just left out to fray?
Knit fabrics don’t fray like wovens.
@@Mellysews Maybe fray was the wrong term. I just thought the shirt is so otherwise perfect; ie your seam finishes on the hem and sleeves are done, why would you leave a raw edged neckline? It' looks gorgeous btw. Well done!!

hi. Do you know off hand why my serger is skipping a stitch ever 30 stitches. but not always. New needles. recently repaired.
No, I'd suggest seeing a machine repair technician.
Its all fine. I needed ti adjust the lenght anf feed dogs for knits. All is good
I checked your blog, where would your T-shirt pattern be or do I have to pay for it now?
All the details are in the blog post; the size small is free for newsletter subscribers.
I can't find the free pattern for the v-neck, t-shirt? Could someone tell me where to find it? Thanks :)

can I ask. do you have to account a seam allowance still, ie will you be sewing with the machine. or are you done using the serger
maybe I should ask, should we cut? and if so how much?
I don't understand your question.
Hello do you know any good sewing machines you would recommend to beginner sewers?
I sew on a Baby Lock, and I love all their machines.
I have tried so many times to get the front threads to pull through but all that happens is I unravel the stitched
You might want to try threading the ends on a hand sewing needle and using it to pull them to the other side.
Cannot see when you were sewing the V..you started in the front of shirt at V?
I'd suggest checking the post linked in the video description - there are close up photos in it that may help you.
Hey nice

I can't get the correct fit on a $5 tee shirt, so I prefer to sew mine.
I agree Melissa, you can get cheap t shirts all day long, but that's exactly what you get, cheap. Also, if I add up the number of t-shirts I can make from a couple yards of fabric, they're not much more than the cheap ones at the store.
