I'm in the minority (I guess, I'm surprised at how adamant most people are about it needing to be animated) but I've wanted a live action Zelda movie since 12-year-old me played Ocarina of Time for the first time. I think I hear where people are coming from--and I admit the production team does not inspire a ton of confidence--but a live-action Zelda can work. Two things I'd point to: Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves nails the tone of a action-filled epic that is still cartoonish and sometimes goofy as hell. And Scot Pilgrim manages a style that basically feels like a live action video game. This is possible.
I didn’t think it could get any stranger than what they were doing with the Mario movie. They went and made this one so much stranger you have to use exponents to measure how much stranger.
I understood why everyone was clowning on Chris's role as Mario, but Tom Holland as Link, while not my ideal casting, I could see it working. So my question is why the disdain for Tom Holland? He is a very athletic actor who could pull off the swordplay needed for such a role. Honest question, looking for an honest answer.
The thing about Ghibli is that Miyazaki would definitely not want to make a movie about an established property and would absolutely not be swayed to do anything other than what he wants to do, so Nintendo would not have any input on the film whatsoever.
Arlo: I don’t think one producer can harm a project like this. Me: Oh my poor sweet little Arlo let me tell you a little story about Jon Peters and his love of spiders.
I made a prediction list for Nintendo movies I thought madee sense that started with Mario Galaxy, Luigi's Mansion, Donkey Kong Country, Kirby... kind of a logic through line of movies that would slowly familiarize western audiences with Nintendo's cute characters and then get to the serious ones like Samus and Link, but I forgot this is Nintendo we're talking about. They just can never play safe or do the expected thing.
Honestly it just feels like Miyamoto is an old guy who is entertaining himself with flavour of the year passion projects. Except in this case he has an entire media empire with countless beloved franchises he can play around with instead of an old car in a garage.
Genuinely surprised they aren’t doing an Anime styled film obviously I don’t think they realistically could get studio Ghibli but even then live action seems a bit weird
I'm going to be honest, I was never all that invested in the idea of a Zelda movie being animated. In fact, I want it to be live action. Because in my head, a Zelda movie would feel like an '80s fantasy film. I'm thinking Legend or Willow or Labyrinth. And what I'd really love to see is the monsters and fantasy races of Hyrule made by Jim Henson's Creature Shop.
When i think of a live action Zelda is a better route than animated. (they could always do a wind Waker later that is animated). But I think of the epicness of Zelda. I think something with set pieces of Lord of the Rings would be amazing
I’ve been seeing the “which Zelda should it be” questions making the rounds. If they want to stick to existing storylines, I’d like to see the prequel manga from the Historia. It’s hard to see that getting a game and it’s the largest untapped story that could be an interesting starting point for potential Zelda franchise. Link even talks in it!
Featuring: Chris Pratt as Link (he’s so cool!) Anya Taylor-Joy as Zelda Jack Black as Ganondorf Seth Rogen as the Great Deku Tree Charlie Day as Navi Keegan Michael-Key as Tingle Fred Armisen as Beedle
Here is my prediction: 2025 - The Legend of Zelda Movie (Same year as the Minecraft Movie) 2026 - The Donkey Kong Movie 2027 - The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2
For some reason, I would like to imagine the live action Zelda movie to have Chronicles of Narnia vibes. That movie adaptation was truely magican and whimsical and I hope the Zelda movie does that.
oh well, maybe its childhood nostalgia making me biased 😔 (if i was to defend anything about the narnia movies tho it would be the soundtrack at least fr)@@grayscales1864
The Mario Movie was easy to like because at the end of the day, watching Mario go on an even serviceably enjoyable adventure was enough to satisfy us. We weren’t expecting a compelling narrative from a Mario movie made by Illumination, and animated kids movies are just easy to enjoy. The Legend of Zelda being live action almost ensures it will have a serious and more mature tone. And a “serviceable” mature movie is gonna be way more hard to swallow. Maybe they could go a more campy road, it depends on what vision Miyamoto has for Zelda. But I feel weirdly way more apprehensive about this than with the Mario Movie.
Avi Arad is famous for interfering with directors. Wanna know why Venom is in Spiderman 3? Welp that was him. He forced it in because Venom is "cool" without regarding the fact that Venom was not supposed to be the main villain.
Live action Zelda could be the optimal choice for Zelda, but sadly it never would be. Live action Zelda with STRICTLY practical effects A La Labyrinth 1986 with insane puppetry could work soooo well
I really would love for actually short actors to play the short characters (like Link and Zelda) and actually tall actors to play the tall characters (like the Gerudo people, even though it might be a little hard to find that many).
All the “It should be animated” comments are equal to the “chris Pratt sounds nothing like Mario” comments. Like, yes. Everyone can agree on that. We don’t need every single comment to repeat the same opinion.
A director with fewer credits will be easier to work with. A big-name director will fight nintendo on what they want, and a lesser known one will adhere to their vision more. The producer has also worked on every recent Spiderman movie, and they have all been great. It's clear when given the proper support he is very capable. I'm very curious to see the cast list
Avi Arad does NOT work on the MCU spiderman movies or Spiderverse movies, He has a contract that says he has to be paid as a producer in every Spiderman movie, as he was the one that managed to get the rights for Sony He's the guy that fucked up the TASM movies, and That's why Sony stops him from having an active role
Conspiracy theory. I think Nintendo keeps choosing the worst people to work on their movie because it gets people talking. Everyone gets all like “oh my gosh this movie is gonna suuuuck. I’m totally going to watch this train wreck” and people talk about it and it gets a lot of buzz and publicity an a bunch of people go see it. And if it turns out good, they get to have a good laugh at our expense for thinking it would be bad.
I'm concerned about it being live action. For it to be live action, I feel it needs to be more gritty than a typical Zelda game. More akin to Twilight Princess. Because having cartoony enemies like from WW, SS, or BotW will look weird when compared to live action actors. But Nintendo has made it clear they don't want that look anymore. Also, Link is a blank slate you can self insert. Androgynous, silent, stoic. If they make him a quirky one-liner-saying character played by a famous actor, it won't be Link. If they don't use the green tunic, I'll riot. If they make Link a talking Marvel character, I'll riot. If they cast some famous actor as Link, I'll riot. I have a sneaking suspicion the film is going to be BotW the Movie™ with Tom Holland as Link making cheeky jokes every couple of minutes.
@arlo on Live Action, it really does depend on what they DO with this medium. A Live Action medium can really lend itself to a darker, grittier story tone, I'm thinking atmosphere's like Twilight Princess , or BotW/TotK, I think even a less colorful retelling of the Original tLoZ can work. Question remains- is that what Nintendo is actually going for, or are they gonna try to hamfist a Triforce into a star-shaped hole?
The rumors were definitely just fans making inferences. There was a rumor about a Zelda show being worked on at Netflix a few years ago and then that supposedly got cancelled really early on because Nintendo was mad that Netflix gave it away. I think the logic was "Well, the Mario movie did so well, they're definitely gonna do Zelda in live action now if they were trying to do it before."
It seems like Nintendo is picking talent generally able pull things off with supervision, but don't necessarily have the sway to fight them during production.
If they give Link a voice, he should be shy and not say much. This would go with his typical personality in the series anyway. Or maybe they could just make him a humble orphan who was never educated and so he never learned how to speak properly.
The only way live action is a good idea is if they use high quality puppetry (think Labrynth) to populate the world with the various interesting zelda monsters and races. A puppet suit goron sounds a hundred times more interesting than a CG goron. Live action Zelda is never going to be good unless it is creative and weird and there is no way Nintendo does that. Honestly I think the best we can hope for is inoffensive.
I wish it was animated, the Hyrule aesthetic would look amazing with high production value in CG or even in an Anime type style. I'm highly skeptical but I guess we'll see.
I have hope they can pull it off but I agree with the concern around the choice to go live action. Especially considering who they’re hiring for the project. I would expect talents that gave us big fantasy blockbusters like Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies.
There is no way they are going to do this, but I would love it if they actually stuck with the silent protagonist and played with the absurdity. Just imagine, Link wakes up and his house is empty but he is left note from family/Zelda like many of the games, and it doesn't seem too weird that he is not talking since no one is there, he goes out to meet up with family/Zelda in town for a festival or whatever (really just insert stock "right before everything goes horribly wrong" scenario) but before he gets there tragedy strikes and he just doesn't make it in time to rescue anyone. but their was a witness to the tragedy who starts explaining to link what happened before he got there and when he finishes their is this tense moment where it zooms in on Links face as he processes what he has been told, and you think "he has to say something now" but instead he just nods resolutely and goes and grabs a sword. The Exposition Dump guy just watches him run off with a look on his face that says "... really? Not a single word to me? How rude!". This continues for the whole movie with Link never actually responding with words to anyone, including at least one mini boss who tries to taunt him for being so quiet. Then in the Climax Ganon monologues before getting cut off by Link once it becomes clear he is the Big Bad (possible moment to let the gag break with a "you talk too much" quip from link, but I think the gag has enough staying power if done right to make it up to his rescue with Zelda). He defeats Ganon and rescues Zelda, and she's happy (she may have to do some magical shenanigans to fix some sort of magical nonsense Ganon did like in the games) and when she asks link a question about how he rescued her or about his adventure you do one of two things. 1, Smash straight to credits as soon as he opens his mouth. 2, have the question be about who helped him along the way, and him look about awkwardly for a second until shes like "...please dont tell me you did that thing where you forget to actually talk to people?" and he responds (with better writing obviously) "I was very focused on the mission, and besides they always told me what I needed to do next even without me asking them anything, so it all worked out." Even if the movie turned out bad I would still watch it just to see Link seemingly instantly forget people exist as soon as they finish exposition-ing to him. I would adore this gag as long as they stuck too it.
They should do a Xehanort-style Ganon from across time come together to destroy Hyrule completely and Links from across time join forces, just batshit insane for fun
I was hoping a Zelda movie would have similar animation to that Castlevania tv show, 2d and colourful but a bit more realistic, I guess for me Zelda just seems like a more important franchise to adapt right and when it looks like all the creative involved were picked solely based on how profitable their movies have been it makes me feel like they won't get it right What I'd really like is maybe a less known Director/Writer who actually love the series and want to make something that will add to the Zelda universe in an interesting way, but I feel like that's too much to ask.
Arad is the PRIME reason the original Spider-Man trilogy died with 3 and the reboot died at Amazing 2. His input in films over his career should be a RED ALARM for a film like this. Wes Ball’s Maze Runner is teen drama trash, and that writer shouldn’t even have a job after his recent films. In order for this project to even FUNCTION, Nintendo needs to be GRAFTED into the development so hard, it would make Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige blush.
Don't underestimate Avi arad, the dude has been around forever. Whenever you watch something Spider-Man related the chances are his name is in the credits.
To me it feels like Nintendo just gave the IP's to the lowest bidder. I don't see any other reason why they would pic Illumination, maybe cause of the Minions child friendly reputation, but it would still feel weird cause Nintendo is usually so protective of their Ip's. As the movie turned out so well I'm now salivating how good it would have been if Pixar made it. To be fair I haven't even seen it yet, gotta find where they're streaming it in Finland. Edit. That would be SkyShowtime in December for anyone interested.
I would have gotten the guys that made Arcane to go to town on it. Arcane was incredible, and a similar serious animation style for Zelda would have been sick.
Why does the Zelda community dislike Tom Holland so much? As far as actors go, I can't really think of anyone who would be better casting than him. I mean, he's better casting for Link than Chris Pratt was for Mario, and I liked Chris Pratt as Mario.
@@genmaicha.lapsang I can see that. And I've heard people say he would be a better choice for Link, but frankly the only reason I think people say that is that he isn't as popular as Holland. But if I'm being honest, I think Tom Holland looks more like Link. Timothy Chalame has a very defined jaw line and chin, but Link has a much softer, boyish face.
Lots of stuff to not be excited about in the announcement and information that we have so far, buuuuutv Nintendo has had really good results from lending their IPs to other studios to make stuff and being involved with what's getting made, so... I'm gonna go with setting a really low bar of expectations and keeping my fingers crossed in the meantime.
At some point making a movie is like making a game as long as you got the art design down and solid world premise you're just designing a story to showcase the material...not always deep content but deep fan service,

And Scot Pilgrim manages a style that basically feels like a live action video game. This is possible.
The Zelda movie announcement felt like watching someone else getting slapped to me. I am not involved in it but I am just as the person being slapped.
I'd love to see classic pig wizard Ganon
I didn’t think it could get any stranger than what they were doing with the Mario movie. They went and made this one so much stranger you have to use exponents to measure how much stranger.
It’s great to be a Nintendo fan. Loving it.
8:57 big fan of how he spoke about how colourful and vibrant Zelda is overtop of Twilight Princess footage; the least colourful Zelda game there is
I understood why everyone was clowning on Chris's role as Mario, but Tom Holland as Link, while not my ideal casting, I could see it working.
I wonder if Eiji Aonuma is involved at all. Hopefully.
I’m already relieved that Nintendo didn’t choose David & Dan for their plot writing…
They should get John Leguizamo to play Tingle or Beedle.
Arlo: I don’t think one producer can harm a project like this.
Me: Oh my poor sweet little Arlo let me tell you a little story about Jon Peters and his love of spiders.
And Avi Arad with his love for Venom (he messed up Raimi's Spider-Man 3 because of that).
Nah
I'm going to be honest, I was never all that invested in the idea of a Zelda movie being animated. In fact, I want it to be live action. Because in my head, a Zelda movie would feel like an '80s fantasy film. I'm thinking Legend or Willow or Labyrinth. And what I'd really love to see is the monsters and fantasy races of Hyrule made by Jim Henson's Creature Shop.
Watch as the next movie Nintendo announces is a claymation Metroid movie made by the team behind teen titans go
When i think of a live action Zelda is a better route than animated.
But he also dies in there, so idk if they would go that route 🙉 (also I don’t want to see him die ahdjfjf)
As long as there's a scene where Link travels through the Goron kingdom whilst Take On Me plays in the background.
Featuring:
Chris Pratt as Link (he’s so cool!)
Anya Taylor-Joy as Zelda
Jack Black as Ganondorf
Seth Rogen as the Great Deku Tree
Charlie Day as Navi
Keegan Michael-Key as Tingle
Fred Armisen as Beedle
7:50 Whoa whoa, Nintendo doesn't have any direct competition, that would be craaaazy
Here is my prediction:
2025 - The Legend of Zelda Movie (Same year as the Minecraft Movie)
2026 - The Donkey Kong Movie
2027 - The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2
It's just a lot of people with mid to poor track records. I know it's a franchise movie but I still want quality people involved.
For some reason, I would like to imagine the live action Zelda movie to have Chronicles of Narnia vibes. That movie adaptation was truely magican and whimsical and I hope the Zelda movie does that.
Man I disagree I found those movies to be corny and cringe af! I’ve read all the books many times in my life and love the stories
oh well, maybe its childhood nostalgia making me biased 😔 (if i was to defend anything about the narnia movies tho it would be the soundtrack at least fr)@@grayscales1864
It's definitely gonna be a movie that's for sure
Chris Pratt as Zelda and Jack black as Gannondorf
Live action Zelda could be the optimal choice for Zelda, but sadly it never would be. Live action Zelda with STRICTLY practical effects A La Labyrinth 1986 with insane puppetry could work soooo well
Tom Holland should be Pit for a Kid Icarus movie. It can work for both a live action or animated movie!
I think it's hilarious that in the near future we will see ads for this movie on PS5 consoles
Avi Arad does NOT work on the MCU spiderman movies or Spiderverse movies, He has a contract that says he has to be paid as a producer in every Spiderman movie, as he was the one that managed to get the rights for Sony
He's the guy that fucked up the TASM movies, and That's why Sony stops him from having an active role

Me: Metroid could make a great live action film nowadays.
Nintendo: How about a Live Action Zelda Movie?
Me: Okay, but- **insert infinite why's here**
Conspiracy theory.
That video of the ghibli style animated in unreal zelda that came out last week looks spectacular. I wish Nintendo hired thst man lol
I'm glad I'm not the only one who immediately pictured Tom Holland as Link with a sense of creeping dread.
I think the logic was "Well, the Mario movie did so well, they're definitely gonna do Zelda in live action now if they were trying to do it before."
fun fact: the producer Avi Arad is also producing the long in development Metal Gear Solid movie.
I did not for the life of me ever expect Morbius to be referenced in any capacity on this channel😂😂
It seems like Nintendo is picking talent generally able pull things off with supervision, but don't necessarily have the sway to fight them during production.
I’m hoping for a live action Clu Clu Land next
I wonder if they'll be taking from a specific part of the extant timeline or adding on or just straight up AU or what.
1:09 Legend of Zelba Movie? I thought you were talking about The Legend of Zelda movie.
We need Freya Allen as Zelda please thanks
Go watch that canceled Mouse Guard movie style trailer. That's why Wes Ball is attached to this.
I always pictured Metroid as live action, I’m still excited for this movie though!
I have hope they can pull it off but I agree with the concern around the choice to go live action. Especially considering who they’re hiring for the project. I would expect talents that gave us big fantasy blockbusters like Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies.
Nooooo not live action. Oh God, that sucks. Oh well.
Starring: Timothy Chalamet. Zendaya as Princess Zelda. Dwayne Johnson as Ganondorf! And Jack Black as Impa!
2, have the question be about who helped him along the way, and him look about awkwardly for a second until shes like "...please dont tell me you did that thing where you forget to actually talk to people?" and he responds (with better writing obviously) "I was very focused on the mission, and besides they always told me what I needed to do next even without me asking them anything, so it all worked out."
Even if the movie turned out bad I would still watch it just to see Link seemingly instantly forget people exist as soon as they finish exposition-ing to him. I would adore this gag as long as they stuck too it.
I'd rather he just talk, honestly
Can’t wait to see Henry Cavill as adult Link. He was born to play this role. Tom Holland plays child Link of course.
In my head this should be done like a modern day Never Ending Story, Princess bride, Hook. An epic adventure deep childrens movie.
They should do a Xehanort-style Ganon from across time come together to destroy Hyrule completely and Links from across time join forces, just batshit insane for fun
I was hoping a Zelda movie would have similar animation to that Castlevania tv show, 2d and colourful but a bit more realistic, I guess for me Zelda just seems like a more important franchise to adapt right and when it looks like all the creative involved were picked solely based on how profitable their movies have been it makes me feel like they won't get it right
What I'd really like is maybe a less known Director/Writer who actually love the series and want to make something that will add to the Zelda universe in an interesting way, but I feel like that's too much to ask.
It’s going to be a frame for frame remake of Spirit Tracks.
if Nintendo casted Tom Holland as Link that would be the biggest flex in history
I swear if they make Link talk
Nintendo is notorious for not listening to their fans. EVERYONE AND I MEAN EVERYONE ASKED FOR A GHIBLI STYLE ZELDA...
They announced it so early because, as is tradition with the LoZ franchise, there can be at least 3 delays in production. 😅
I would have gotten the guys that made Arcane to go to town on it. Arcane was incredible, and a similar serious animation style for Zelda would have been sick.
Why does the Zelda community dislike Tom Holland so much? As far as actors go, I can't really think of anyone who would be better casting than him. I mean, he's better casting for Link than Chris Pratt was for Mario, and I liked Chris Pratt as Mario.
depends on how silent Link is in the movie i guess? maybe British Link would make sense though, we already have British Zelda
Timothy Chalame would be the other choice.
“Somehow, Ganon returned”
I mean they got song but they didn’t do it in the spider verse style. They dropped the ball on that one
Miyamoto will be cast as Link and Zelda
Andy Serkis as Ganon would be cool
I'M PERSONALLY LOOKING FOR ARLO SNARK
They should have went for Peter Jackson...lol
Too bad Orlando Bloom isnt younger. He kind of looked like Link as Legolas
Dave Bautista as Ganondorf and I’m good
At some point making a movie is like making a game as long as you got the art design down and solid world premise you're just designing a story to showcase the material...not always deep content but deep fan service,
Watch, the cast will be something like Link: Tom Holland; Zelda: Zendaya; Gannon: Michael Keaton
