    I worked at the welfare office in a Ohio city as a translator. In an interview to decide if a Hurricane Maria victim who relocated from Puerto Rico would receive benefits, the applicant handed over her birth certificate and the case worker (who made much more than us) looked at it, noticed it was in Spanish, closed her notebook, and said;
    "Yeah, sorry we can only consider US citizens as applicants. This is in Spanish."
    I say, "It's from Puerto Rico, that's why it's in Spanish."
    She nodded, and said "Yes, exactly."
    Then I took a deep breath and said "Puerto Rico is a US territory. She’s a US citizen.”
    She turned red then opened her notebook back up and nonchalantly said "Oh that's right, I just forgot haha".
    When I walked back to my desk, all I kept wondering was how many US citizens this tenured caseworker might've wrongly denied benefits to.

Years back, I tutored junior high school students, and they didn't even know what the Holocaust was. When I looked in their history book, there was one paragraph about it in the whole book, and that paragraph didn't even make the Holocaust sound bad. I was utterly disgusted. The people in charge of airports told me they felt it was strange and would get back to me about it. They never did. My mother is from PR and I look stereotypically Puerto Rican, so I get that a lot. I had an incident with too. back in 2019 I need a car for a long drive, (didn't trust the clunker I was driving then) I paid $600 up front and then when I got there they didn't have the car I rented. First they tried to put me in a compact car, and when I got mad the manager said that he would give me "free upgrade." So I got in the car and after I had driven for about an hour, it up and died. Everything went black, and I had to steer the car side of the road with no engine. So I called hertz back and they said they would send someone to replace the battery (I don't think it was just the battery, but what do I know). I had to wait in the hot sun for more than 2 hours before some dude came up in an unmarked vehicle (scaring the life out of me) to fix the car. So. the battery was replaced the car restarted and I went on with my trip. About a week after that I noticed a charge from Hertz on my credit card for $400 more dollars. So I called Hertz and they claimed that it was for the "upgrade" and "service." Fortunately I paid with my Amex and quickly got the charges reversed. But then I started getting threatening calls from companies claiming to be debt collectors from Hertz, so I had to call Amex again and they told me to write a dispute letter and send it certified. I did that but they did not stop calling, and later I found that they tried to damage my credit. I then had to write all three credit bureaus disputing the debt and eventually got it removed. But I am still playing wack-a-mole with different companies claiming to collect the debt on behalf of Hertz. It is not a good company. Btw, Thrifty and Dollar are also Hertz.

Republican members of Congress have come out against statehood; with then Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell saying that he would not bring statehood to a vote in the Senate and that statehood for Puerto Rico was "another example of government overreach." Republican Senator for Arizona Martha McSally came out against statehood on a partisan basis, asserting that it would lead to more Democratic Party senators, despite the fact that Puerto Rico had several territory-wide offices held by Republicans at the time. If Puerto Rico became a state, it would be expected to have two senators, four House representatives, and six electoral college votes.
