- Atwater faces a traumatised kid with a gun when the go to inspect a crime scene.
Season 6 Episode 1 " The New Normal"
The Intelligence unit deals with the aftermath of Olinsky’s death. Voight is put on suspension following the last case when he shot the suspect in cold blood. The Intelligence unit investigates a series of overdoses of heroin. Ruzek begins to butt heads with Dawson when he is put in charge of the Unit. Later, both Ruzek and Dawson have opposing views on good police work and get into a violent brawl. Everyone is still dealing with the loss of Alvin Olinsky. Later, everyone attends a funeral for their friend, with Voight watching at a distance.

Ruzek should’ve been calmer like Dawson was as it was only a kid and he knows what it feels like to loose someone you love.
it wasn't Dawson it was Atwater
he was probably very on edge since they recently lost another friend. ruzek didnt want to lose another member of intelligence.
To be fair to Ruzek, it takes iron will to stand in front of a gun barrel, even as a policeman.

People tend to be more scared if it’s a kid, than a 500 - pound man, with a gun
A gun is more dangerous in the hands of someone who has no idea how to use one, than in the hands of someone who does.
Because he was scared, and a scared person whether they be an adult or a child can very easily pull the trigger on reflex, they don't need to do it on purpose.
I think they don’t want to shoot a kid.

Because kids are harder to read and are very unpredictable. They don’t think on the same plain as adults do, because their brain is undeveloped compared to a human adult.

Okay, obviously I’m not a trained professional, but it’s a kid with a gun. Wouldn’t it make more sense to let him run out of ammo? I doubt he knows how to reload the gun.
I am 13 lol. Press the mag release. The magazine will fall out. Put a mag with ammo in the gun and rack the slide.
If he knows how to shoot he can probably figure out how to reload it
