    at 2:48...it appears to me that she ground into that stone from exactly the wrong side. She ends up with a somewhat nice dark opal but could have had a much nicer black opal if she kept the black potch and ground off the dark potch side instead

    • @niklasw1956
      @niklasw1956 3 роки тому +2

      It still has the bodytone of a black opal, it's the brighter and vibrant colours combined with patterns that are what bumbs the price - and alot of the time black prch hides the most beautiful colors. Gamble ofcourse

    • @hyfy-tr2jy
      @hyfy-tr2jy 3 роки тому +8

      @@niklasw1956 sure....but at a lower grade. The fact that the other side had full coverage of absolute black potch would have made it a true gem quality black opal regardless of pattern.

    • @niklasw1956
      @niklasw1956 3 роки тому +7

      That is partially true tho however according too Black Opal Direct, the driving forces behind pricing (as long as it is sits in black opal bodytone N1-N3). The brightness and patterns are the real driver behind pricing. A N3 with brightness of 5 is more expensive than a N1 with the brightness of 3

    • @acousticpineapple7851
      @acousticpineapple7851 3 роки тому +8

      @@niklasw1956 nah dude she messed up, removing the black potch lowered its value for sure, even if its still great. could have left a 1mm black backing and then its a 6ct + gem grade black opal.

    • @acousticpineapple7851
      @acousticpineapple7851 3 роки тому +3

      @@niklasw1956 yeah but this is an N nothing now, its basically a saturated crystal opal, and sure it looks great but a bit of black potch would have increased the value. price of crystal opal is capped lower than black opal. i.e. a gem grade crystal sitting on black potch is worth more than a perfectly matched gem grade crystal opal of the same quality. those are the hard facts. altho lol if you had a pair like that it might be smarter to cut the black off, the perfect crystal pair would be worth more im guessing.
      its not a massive jump in price difference but its there
