Those of us who have or are still hauling water know the beauty of dragging the hose. He's still green but he'll come around 😁

Great video. Ive been doing things like you for 25 plus years. I always know I can learn something new. Tha ks for the video. Note. I have two boys that grew up like your son had, working hard on a homestead. They are 23 and 18 now and fine upstanding young men. Lane seems to be a fine young man and I am sure constantly makes you proud. Ill be watching.

Love your channel!!!! We have learned a lot from your videos and am excited about the traditional skills classes. We are by no means to the scale you guys are but we do have raised bed gardens as well as an in ground garden. We also have egg layers and have run meat birds over the entire back yard (which isn't that big bc we live in a cul de sac). We moved them everyday until butcher day and it improved the grass and soil so much it was unbelievable. We could see a total difference from where they were to where they were going. Permaculture really works!!!!!!! We need to put animals back out on the grass!!!!!! We are praying for Caroline to have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. God Bless you and yours!!!!!!

Look into modifying the muffler. Use dome galvanized piping. Put a couple bends on it and then attach original muffler at the end. You do need to consider backpressure but adding some lengths of piping will greatly decrease the noise

I wish we had a well system but we are on city water. I do collect rain water in two rain barrels, hopefully I will be able to add more barrels, you can actually use a garbage can which are fairly inexpensive and they hold rain water just fine. Another saving grace is we live on a large rentention pond and we've pumped water with a sump pump before to the garden. We don't do it anymore since we got hooked up to city water and I started collecting rain water. But yes I couldn't agree more water is the lifeblood of a good homestead and let's be honest water is life

Regarding your loud generator pump: my husband and I encountered a very similar noise issue with our generator that is *really* loud.
My husband built a portable box out of old pallet wood and some leftover fiberglass insulation to encompass our generator on 3 sides. It made a huge difference for our sleep. While I can’t say exactly how much it cut the noise, if I had to guess, it must’ve dampened the noise by two thirds. He simply put some handles on the sides so that it can be moved around with our generator.
    God bless 💯❣️🇺🇸

I just watched the video and wanted to say the same thing. If you can find 4-5 pallets, then make a 3 sided structure with and angled roof(note the 4-5 pallets). This will direct the noise away from your house. Not 100%, but it’ll be very noticeable and heavily appreciated.

Josh I built a sound proof enclosure that has a vent on one side for air in and exhaust out, that side I position away from our home. It reduces sound considerably and also keeps rain off the unit.

If you have an issue with the noise of your pump. In the Army, we dig a small shallow pit or surround it with sand bags to a height over the generator/pump. It should eliminate the noise by 80%-90%.

For snow load, after the chickens are in the barn, drag the coops into the tree line.

Speaking of black poly pipe, perhaps you may consider using a bunch coiled up underground near your root cellar with an open end running up to fresh air on the outside and the other end running into storage cellar. Makes a decent vent and cold air intake for relatively little cost (assuming you get the coils deep enough). I can’t speak to how well it would work in your area, but it worked for a homestead ranch I worked for in my youth for the main house pretty well. Much more arid environment in SE New Mexico, though, so I don’t know how well it would suit your environment. Another idea I had on my current place was to change all the grey water plumbing and pipe it out to the garden rather than down the septic system. This works on pier and beam but would be a nightmare on slab and we don’t use much in the way of chemical detergents that would hurt soil and plants. Still tweaking that concept, but I like at least not sending all that water into a system I can’t put to much use since water collection and consumption is the main challenge in my area. Interested in feedback, of course!

The blue frame on the pump should easily allow you to enclose the pump and cut the noise considerably.

They make small units to cover generators. I think that one of those would help with the noice of this pump.

G'day Josh, there is some good advice down below, Lorchid23, and Jennifer Haasch are on the right track. I wouldn't touch the exhaust on the pump motor. I had a similar problem with a printing press in my garage, the neighbor's house was only 14 feet away and he complained to the council, well, an inspector came out and he listened to the press running from the fence.
The inspector said that the sound was coming through the garage side window, bolt a sheet of 5/8 inch plywood over the window at approx 4 inches off the wall, this will baffle the sound. He was correct and had no more complaints.

We use city water (actually we are the last house in the system as we live outside the city). When we moved in, our water pressure was about 28 psi. We had to buy a pump to pump in the water from the city. Its expensive to irrigate my gardens as we don't have a well. 200+ a month during the summer months.

We had the some problem with our backup generator. My husband modified the muffler & he built a small shed around it. You’ll be amazed at the noise reduction by just covering it.

Very cool. Not overly complicated and simple. I wonder if there is a different system kind of like Justin's chicken tractor and electric fence you could use on the rougher terrain. That might be challenging depending on your predator issues.

Fantastic video. I have done something similar, but on a VERY reduced scale, with my hoses. Had it in for about 3-4 years now and discovered this year that a split would be useful in an additional place. I was wondering, what if you built a small, soundproofed shed for the pond pump to go into?

(Uneducated red comentario 😊 but can you put a small concrete or cider block wall/ pump house to dampen the sound? Perhaps a noise absorbing hedge around the concrete to cut down on the due sore of concrete?
I love the idea of watering the pasture with pond water/ I’ll certainly be looking into that!

Looking into a small parcel near me that I could drive to & plant perennial food crops - it has a creek running through it, but the other side is a conventionally farmed field, and I'm concerned that using creek water will contaminate the land/plants. My plan is to immediately put up a roof, even if it's just on posts, to begin water catchment.

Can you build a shelter over the pump? I know with generators, if its in direct line of sight it is a lot louder than if it is behind any type of wall. Just include enough open spots for ventilation.

Can you tell me what the white post topper is and it's purpose? We need to have post extensions applied to our t-posts around one of our gardens because of the deer but can't find anything on this subject or where we can get such a product. My husband said he remembers seeing something about this but can't remember where's he saw it. We sure would appreciate any info you can share.

@@hopeisorange honestly I don't understand it all completely myself. I've suffered from multiple brain injuries, so some things just don't compute. So I don't feel I'm the one to educate anyone on this topic. But I literally just googled ancient water ways & ancient water systems & things along those lines as I got different results. The most common were the Roman water ways. But I found the Mesopotamian and Mayan water systems even more fascinating. Tons of info out there, I've only scratched the surface of so far. Check it out it's really interesting.

Looking at your A-frame chicken tractors - would it be possible to catch rain from the roof? Wondering if catchment could be done partway down the roof into storage on 95% of the roof, leave a small portion to run straight into a gutter they could drink from, then when it's not raining feed water from storage into the gutter. Thought popped into my head, don't know if it would be feasible & I haven't thought it through, just makes me curious.

I can pump water from a polluted river, but I don't know if it's a good idea for my garden. The pollution is a lot of farm runoff, pesticides, etc. Any thoughts? Water filtration systems are expensive and confusing. Thanks
