  • I've learned a lot homesteading over the past 20 years, but there's always more to learn and more to implement.
Join me as I discuss some of the things we're doing here at Riverbend, with special thanks to my time with Joel Salatin and Justin Rhodes. As Joel says, "Good enough is perfect" and that's what I'm practicing.

This year we made a small step that has turned out to be huge for us. We had a side yard that was just worthless. The soil was clay and small rocks (Chirt). I hauled some compost from our local waste water treatment plant (they get awards for their compost) and tilled it in. With a rear tine tiller. We planted four 20 foot rows of green beans (white half runners). We just hoped they would do something. We have canned 45 quarts of green beans and the plants are still producing! It is not much, but to us it is a huge accomplishment. Green beans are a frequent meal side for us and with this amount of production we will not need to buy green beans for the next year. We are even saving seeds so we can plant our own seeds next year.

On the off chance you haven't tried this already:
Rinse green beans then put in a bowl (still wet), cover, and microwave until tender (depends on how much you put in). They should look wrinkly and chew nicely. Pat them dry. Cook green beans in a single layer with a enough oil to generously coat the bottom of the pan. Let cook without stirring on medium until one side of the bean chars (4 to 6 min, depending on your stove). Stir/flip and let the other side char. Place back in original bowl (minus oil). Season with a mix of salt, pepper, and lemon zest, then a light squeeze of lemon juice, toss to coat.
      Super tasty :)

Good job. That’s a great start. Just remember that waste from water treatment often contains heavy metals and pharmaceuticals even after treatment. Unless the awards are from organic groups, that’s probably not enough to judge the quality and safety. But you’re on your way!

When I started saying that I wanted to be out on land my families first reaction is “That’s a lot of work.” And the first thing I think I said was, “I know but that’s why you get systems in place that a child could do.” Josh, you are right on the dime on your thinking on planing out your lanes, fencing that makes hooking up to power easy and finally getting the water system in place. Joel’s advice on putting WATER in place was also the BEST advice that makes sense on er the long run that will not only save money, time but wear and tear on the farmer.

Type A physician here, I am also a " perfect is good enough" person. It is a constant struggle for me to focus on productivity and beauty in the imperfection. I k ow its silly bc nothing and no one is perfect and I have such grace for others just never for myself. Luckily God keeps giving me things and people to help in my life. Thank you for your videos! I love your normal style. I can find exactly what you are teaching. You are my to go to channel. I started with Justin. Love what he does but the story telling makes it very hard to find what we need. I don’t have the time I had two years ago. Now, we have a running homestead so I mostly listen to you all like a podcast. Your teaching ability is just phenomenal and it’s been such a blessing to our home. You were that one homesteader my husband will listen to on his drives, too.

I agree. I love Justin Rhodes too, and there is a beauty and place for his storytelling style and I do dip into it. But what I love most is the casual practical style here at homestead family. I was considering switching from the homestead family membership to abundance plus and have both for a couple months but after trying both I much prefer the more direct, instructional style of your membership. Different people appreciate different things but you guys are at the top of my list!!

I have loved watching you and Caroline for the last couple of years! We just started our own Homestead as a family a little over a year ago, even though my husband and I are older. But we love the lifestyle and are so thankful for all the help that you have offered. Please, please don’t resort to clickbait on your videos though. I’ve found it disappointing that so many of my favorite UA-camrs have changed their style and are no longer informative but instead seem to be going for the entertainment factor.

Thank you for the reminder that things don't have to be perfect. After my husband passed, I have been running our homestead by myself for the past couple of years. Also, I appreciate your educational videos so much! I come to your channel frequently when I’m fixing to _____ (cook, preserve, compost, etc.). I can type in what I need and get the information, but other channels that do the storytelling are so much harder to go back to when needing information. Both types of filming are enjoyable for us viewers, but I look to yours with so much appreciation and enjoyment! I will say though, that when the kiddos are helping, it does put a smile on my heart. Showing viewers the children working alongside you both is educational in and if itself. ❤️

Josh! Love you guys! These are the videos I really enjoy from your channel. (I do enjoy them all) my wife and I just bought our first place with 3.5 acres. You two got it burned in my head to "just start doing something where ever you are and for the past several years, thats exactly what we have been doing. We've been living in an extra small yard space for the past 10 years and through that time we leanerd how to grow corps in a VERY small garden, propagating plants, caning, making meals at home, composting and chickens. We are both excited to start our journey. Thank you both and God bless!!

We just added chicks to our home. We've also talked about a mini goat to eat our grass and blackberry bushes and next year possible meat chickens to walk around the yard. Our property is only about 8k Sq ft but it's mainly just grass. I think I've done some pretty good convincing because now my fiance is totally on board with making our home more self sufficient. I explained it to him like this: why are we putting in so much effort to cut and maintain this yard when we can have animals do it for us? Why depend on the store for everything.. raising chickens takes like 2 months 🤷‍♀️.. why not plant more food and flowers and fruit trees we have plenty of space for it and will still have plenty of grass to play in. Plus we'll have animals to eat most of our food scraps and can provide us with manure for compost for the garden. He saw all the wins and has been on board ever since 🥰
All thanks to your channel and several others who have taught us its okay to have this lifestyle and no matter where you live, you can do most things with moderation.

As always I enjoyed your content.
There is a Texas Rancher on UA-cam that I enjoy watching that does such a effective and efficient land division set up. The shepherdess is what her channel is called. She goes thru a huge change of her land in one video using fencing. She basically creates a circle with pie pieces separating the land and moves them daily like you do. She doesn't worry too much about moving water and food as much which you reminded me of with this video.
    Thanks for the video!

First I must tell you that I enjoy ALL of your videos! We, my husband & I, having been watching your videos for some time. However due to abuse of information given out to other agencies, we had stopped our G & YT accounts. Finally, after some time, we just couldn't take it any longer & we signed back up to G & YT, and it's all because of your great videos and the things I have learned. Thus , it was a really big deal for us to sign back up to G & YT!
I started canning some 50 years ago & we did a lot of fish canning in water baths without any problems. However, when I heard the teaching you provide along with the better equipment; well, I had to join into all the fun! I am really looking forward to our AllAmericanCanner pressure cooker coming soon. I have been vacuum sealing our dried foods. We even purchased the Harvest Right as well. Avocado's do great in this machine & when they are canned, they look & taste great! I hope you received credit for my purchases for the credit is well deserving for all that you teach us! There are many old things I used to do that have changed. I appreciate learning new methods of how to do them.
Please tell your family we, the people in Texas, greatly appreciate your educational offerings, your smiles & laughs, & we hope you do well as I know God is watching over y'all! I wish only my children, who are middle aged adults now, would learn your method of living is how it was meant to be. I can only hope & pray that we will stick together & help one another through what is to come. We left CA 4 years ago & found wonderful property in Texas & we love this lifestyle!

I love your a-frame tractors and designed a similar one for my laying hens. I'm curious though... how do you keep your waterers from freezing in the winter? I live in northern Montana so we have similar winters and I'm struggling to find a simple, mobile way to keep water thawed without electricity.

Real Salt and (MaineCoast) kelp powder! Exactly what I’ve been eating for couple decades lol I’m a sheep‼️
I use only high quality salt n kelp, oh yes. Throw kelp in everything (besides my own 1/8 tsp in morning coffee). No one knows.

I would love to hear about your system of how you pump water from the pond to use. We also have a pond but are not sure what we need to do to get the water pumped from it.

Could you do a video on exactly how you set up the black pipe system? Is the water coming from your pond? A well? We are doing the same thing on our property...running water across the pasture for our cows, goats, and meat birds. But we'd like to run something out there a little more permanent. An underground piping system just isn't an option for us right now, but maybe something like this is.

This video was the best video you have ever made imo. This is the style video I watch on youtube. I am able to learn everything I need to know without watching what I call a dry educational video. I spend my time watching a combination video featuring the beauty of nature, animals, interesting people, stories, and education all at the same time. Why are you worried about snow load on the chicken tractor? I thought that was only for pasture in the summer in a cold climate. For winter don't you have to move the birds to a warmer coop? I have never seen that type of water system in cold climate. So is this just for summer than you drain it?
In central Nebraska we have to trench all pasture water below frost line. Thank You for making this wonderful video and sharing your time with us.

Wow what a blessing your family has. God is good. In verse 15, humans were placed in the Garden of Eden and instructed to 'work it and take care of it.
I am the LORD your God. "`Follow my decrees and be careful to obey my laws, and you will live safely in the land. Then the land will yield its fruit, and you will eat your fill and live there in safety. You may ask, "What will we eat in the seventh year if we do not plant or harvest our crops?"

I’ve been sick and on my 3rd day of “fasting” (fever n nausea/vomiting will do that to ya!)
Yet Im thinking of coffee today and when I can enjoy a cup again‼️
I’m just now getting rehydrated, not been able to tolerate or keep down water, so coffee even tho I’m a decaf person - its still going to be a couple days I think lol
Least I can look at it with the cream, now. That’s progress!
