Great video! We have been in Penang for the past 6 months and are living comfortably on about US$1400 (this includes everything: health insurance, rent for 3 bedroom apartment, eating at a mid-range restaurant once or twice a week, some donations, etc.). The MM2H program has been suspended temporarily, and we are waiting to hear when it will start up again and what the new requirements will be. You make really good points in the Pro and Con section of the video.
What are your suggestions for health insurance for men over 60, and what is the average monthly premiums? Eventually I want to retire to multiple S.E. Asian countries (Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia) for a 4 months each / year, and am wondering what are health insurance options for each country, or health insurance options that can move to each country with me?
@@beehive5835 I have read so much about health insurance by westerner. Worry not, no need to be so worried about getting sick n die. Live like you will be never be fall sick.

I have to correct you on the food side of PG. Tandoori Chicken and Nan Bread are not staple of Penang dishes. Char Koay Teow (fried flat rice noodle), Hokkien Mee (Prawn broth noodle), Nasi Kandar (Indian Muslim curry rice), Asam Laksa, Oh Chean (fried Oyster Omelet), Curry Mee (Curry Noodle) and Nyonya dishes. Since you recognised that PG is food haven, those are our staples.
I will never forget driving a Parodua Kancil that belonged to my Chinese Malaysian girlfriend from Ipoh to Kuala Lumper then to Penang. I am a tall person, and the Kancil was never made for my size. It was so underpowered that when going up a hill you had to turn off the air con or it would stall. Unbelievably we made the trip.
Thank you, very helpful! I like the fact that you have explained about both the pros and cons. Watch videos like this can be a "life saver" or at least money and time saver. Thanks again!
Brilliant vid Ronin . I am thinking very seriously about moving to Malaysia. I’m a 59 year old British male and think the location is perfect for me , I like the history of the whole straits of Malacca area being British , I need to investigate the visa system . I have some money to keep me going for living expenses for ten years or so , renting a small apartment etc .
Excellent video and to the point for every single item that an expat would like to hear about. I live in Michigan. For an American, with even just Social Sec will be good enough to sustain a comfortable life! We are hoping to retire in one of the three places; KL, Johar Bahru or Penang. I have watched a number of your videos except anything on Johar Bahru! Thank you
Good video, though I wish you had covered the weather in greater detail. All the other cons could be easily ignored and pale in comparison to the weather, which appears to be way outside the norms of what most ex-pats are used to, in terms of the amount of rain, the humidity, and the temperature.
Did you know that langkawi is a duty free island? Former PM is from langkawi/Kedah, so many developments were done there. I prefer the world NOT to know about it🤫, mass tourism will destroy any place on this earth. There is a private island on the east coast owned by the sultan, visitors are limited to reservations only. I totally understand that, especially rude tourists from a certain country (we know who they are)
Pls. Research about sabah, Philippines in Malaysia. Well try to hear some of the world's best Filipino singers like Lea salonga, charise pempingco, morissite Amon, Regine Velasquez, Katrina velarde, Nora aunor, kz tandingan, banig roberto, dulce, ivy violan, jaya, Sarah Geronimo, pilita corales, Gary valinciano, Darren espanto, marcilito pomoy, Jose Mari Chan, Michael pangilinan, Daryl ong, Jade madela, budahkel group, TNT boys, tawag ng tanghalan ( noon time show) and Philippine madrigal singers. Thanks for listening ad God bless. Mabuhay. Love from sorsogon city, Philippines.
Nice n pleasant. Nothing exciting. Good for retirees. For excitement, it is convenient to go to KL or to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, even Vietnam. Take the train n bus.
One more reason is if you like looking at stinky toes and armpits all the time because many people wear sandals and slippers as well as tank tops which I absolutely hate

Fantastic video. Thoroughly researched, insightful and well narrated. Great job!
Excellent and highly informative...especially the climate info at the end.
I’m happy that your videos are still here, although you have moved on, Ronin Blue. Rest In Peace!

Thank you! 😃
Thanks Ronin Blue. Good honest insight
Thabk you for the informative video. It helps a lot
Great video! Packed with information!
Thank you so much for sharing.
Cons: Cash only.
Up until recently e-wallet payment is very popular and you can expect most shops and even roadside stalls will accept it.
you can find nightlife at Malaysia, mostly at the foodcourt, we live to eat ^^

Love your videos. Cash is a pro in my opinion. Thanks for all the quality work Abdullah
Glad you like them!
Good balanced view of Penang. Litter was even a problem at Juara beach on Tioman Island. Will look out for Nasi Kandar next time I'm there.
Penang is much more than nasi kandar.
Thanks. Lots of good information.
Out of all the Cost of living in Penang videos I've watched, your narration is the best! That voice!
Thanks! 😃

Wish I could return but cannot come due to Covid restrictions
For the food, you didn't mention Curry Kapitan. Also, Georgetown i siad to have the best Indian food in the world.
How are you Ronin? Hope all is well. Good to watch a new video from you again.
Hey Vincent! I'm well how are you! Great to hear from you again. Been to more places in Malaysia since that time, like KK.
Foreigners, I will recommend that you live in the old shophouses in the heritage enclaves.
Thank you 👍🏻🙏🏻😉☀️🇨🇭
Spent two months there and loved it. Only problem for us was the six am call to prayer that woke us up everyday.
stay in other place no prayer,.
I like it very much to spend my remaining lifetime here.
Be advised that the nearby island of Langkawi is duty-free so check the Muslim supermarkets for cut-price booze.
Langkawi is nice. But is duty free even a thing anymore ?
@@jamies6534 I take your point, but Malaysia's a hard country to take sober. There's always Labuan, but you'll need a car.
but when there is the smog which happened to me it is just awful
Great video, we plan to visit Penang in the near future once the Covid under control, is there short term apartment rental 1-3 months in Penang?
Just need to pay extra. Many available. Many foreigner bought but never stay.

Definitely - it's very hot and humid.

u dont to be outsider to feel amazed by the island even for me as an ex anak tanjung
On the island, food is Chinese n Indian Muslim, less of Malay.
Excellent
I can't eat anything they make as they use palm oil which is not healthful.
what is the cost of living in penang?
Is it pronounced "Peenang" as it sounds in this video, or Paanang, or Penang?
Nasi Kandar originates from India ..... brought in by Tamil Muslims from India.
Sounds great 👍 hope i don’t die of the heat 😂😂
Free energy to keep you warm n alive instead of getting frozen to death.
No one ever died from heat stroke in Malaysia.
Is there a way to get in touch with you. I intend coming with family for 2 months to weigh if it is good for us to live in Penang
Just book in advance at the hotel n then fly in to find your way around to know Penang better.
Nice n pleasant. Nothing exciting. Good for retirees.
For excitement, it is convenient to go to KL or to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, even Vietnam. Take the train n bus.
I miss it
as an Malaysian American ask me how it feels to be anak tanjung
6 Reasons to retire to Penang, Malaysia with a thousand reasons not to retire in Malaysia if you can help it.
can we buy affordable suburban home near there? we do not want to live in a city condo.
not impossible, but bear in mind it is half the size of hawaii and almost the same population
It is still bustling now?
👍👍
East India Company (Not Indian)
😢 Somegood, but lot britishbad brought in penang, now alien became majoriry population and pollution
