    You are a river poet. And i like that. because i have been skipper upon the river Rhine. And afcourse I had to be practical in the work. But some time the river and all around was so amazingling.

    How do you decide when to flank and when to drive a point on a line boat? Just on how tight a bend looks? Like, if a bend looks over a 60 degree turn you flank ?

    Great explanation on flanking a turn. Now I understand how you turn with the current and letting the river do the work for you. My question is how do you make a turn against the current?

    • @marktwained
      @marktwained  3 роки тому

      Just keep head “pointed up” into the current. The harder water is hitting on one side,, it will take you the other.
      The knowledge and experience of how the vessel reacts to the water is what becoming a boat pilot is all about. 👍🏻

    marktwained This channel is awesome, I like the seat of your pants operation of riverboats. It reminds me a lot of how it was when I worked for the railroad. There's the rules, and then there's how things work, sometimes they are diametrically opposite of each other...
    BTW, what do the numbers on your map in the river represent? I assume depth?

    In Holland there where Sleepschepen. And the could do everything with the river using ankers and ropes and thinking very cleen and practicall. Perhaps you can see on You Tube or Google. SLEEPSCHEPEN. I think you like it

    How hard is it to navigate into lock 11 on the Mississippi, It looks hairy.

    • @marktwained
      @marktwained  5 років тому +1

      It can be interesting if water is running, but with use of tug like is customarily done nowadays, it’s not too bad.

      From what I’ve heard, they were inside short wall then were made to back out.
      I don’t understand that, if true.

      You discuss passing agreements via VHF radio prior to approaching a bend... Southbound or with the current to your stern.. That vessel has the right of way bcuz they have less control ..

    • @marktwained
      @marktwained  6 років тому

      I would doubt “less control”, but they is the way rules allow.
