We watched your video once again while waiting for the eclipse then tried to watch for shadow bands. I just finished watching your follow up video where you are watching the eclipse. I too was too busy living it to take any pictures. I have 2 total! But it was such an amazing feeling, I will never forget it!

      In this eclipse, it looked like complete nighttime. Even the parking-lot night lights came on automatically. The squirrels went into their trees, and the bugs stopped flying around. It was eerily quiet except for those of us shouting with glee because of it all, and the sunset effect right before darkness hit was amazing in the background. It was a purply pink kind of background low on the horizon. The darkened sky looked like a very dark smokey blue. And as the darkness was falling, it was weird because one's eyes just adjusted to it automatically. So really the only way to tell it was getting darker was by recording it and by how saturated in color everything became in midday, which doesn't normally happen until the "golden hour" every night before sunset--one of the best times during the day to take photos by the way. Also the amazing thing was seeing Mercury, at least we think it was Mercury, as a star next to the total eclipse of the sun. I actually have that recorded!

    Thanks Destin! I've known about this event since 1998 when I stumbled across a 30 year eclipse map on the internet. I live in the Nashville, TN area. I just installed Gordon's app and I'll have 2 min 30 sec of totality in my back yard. But I'll probably go to my sisters house in Gallatin (on the center line) for an extra 10 to 15 seconds. Never heard of shadow banding. Excited to take a white bed sheet outside for the event! Thanks for all you do. Love SmarterEveryDay!

    Just returned from TN after my first solar eclipse. Wanted to thank you for this video that taught me about shadow snakes. We watched on the hill at a winery and my group was the only one with a big white sheet. We saw them! They were huge and amazing and we freaked out. I wanted to make sure to experience them fully so I didn't film or measure or anything but next time I will make sure. Thanks for this video, it made my eclipse watching that much more powerful and fantastic.

      Wrestling Tips And Tricks U wanna get smarter? Explain why the lunar eclipses that are supposedly the earth's shadow because of the sun being directly behind the earth, how does that happen when both the moon and sun are visible above the horizon at the same time. They tell u the aforementioned eclipses happen because the sun moon and earth are lined up like billiard balls yet over 50 times in the last 5 centuries the eclipses have occurred while both sun and moon are visible above the horizon.
      Also if the moon phases were produced this way the phases shld be reversed when the earth is on the opposite side of the sun lol

    • @quigonkenny
      @quigonkenny 7 років тому +5

      C9_Revelator Atmospheric refraction. The atmosphere acts as a lens for celestial objects very near the horizon, allowing you to see objects that are technically beyond the horizon and making the sun or moon appear higher in the sky (when close to the horizon) than they actually are. Thus it is possible in certain instances during a lunar eclipse to see the moon in the penumbra while it is setting and the sun is rising, or vice versa.

    • @andymcl92
      @andymcl92 7 років тому +1

      In fact, when you're watching the sun set, it has actually already set at the time when you see it just touch the horizon, but the atmospheric refraction means it looks like it hasn't.

    So this one is frequently called "once in a lifetime." Do you have any insight as to how this one compares to the one coming in 7 years that appears to be very similar across the US, just with a different path? If I live near the one in seven years, is it worth it to scrunch a trip down south into my budget for this year? I'm extremely excited either way!

I think most of the hype comes from the fact that this is the first eclipse that is EXCLUSIVE to the United States since 1776 (1257 if you consider the current size of the US). I guess that's kind of cool.

    • @SuperSMT
      @SuperSMT 6 років тому

      It's _almost_ once in a lifetime. The 2026 one will be comparable to 2017, but 2017 is unique because its path goes coast to coast, giving just about the entire country easy access to totality. 2026 goes from Texas to Northern New England.
      The last eclipse to touch the continental US was in 1979 (only Montana, Idaho, Oregon, a little Washington), but the last coast-to-coast one was in 1918. And even the 1918 one was off-center, the point of greatest eclipse was in the middle of the Pacific, 2017's center is in Illinois.
      The US will be lucky this century, we're getting another coast to coast eclipse in 2045.

    All I gotta do is wait till 2030, drive 3 hours and see a total solar eclipse followed by sunset. Then in 2037 I stay at home, set up a hammock and look up at mid-day to see a total solar eclipse. It's gonna be worth the wait to see 2 total solar eclipses in the space of just under 7 years.

We traveled from High Point, NC to Georgetown, SC and though we were fearing storms and clouds the sky was perfect during break all the exciting moments including totality. We were joined by our son, our favorite daughter-in-law and their three kids and though the 30 mile drive back to our cabin in Murrell's Inlet, SC took hours we all ogre that it was TOTALLY worth it! Thanks again, and thanks for all the hour of "educatainment"! Scott

      Things that small don't cast shadows from far away, because the light just diffracts around them over long distances. You can't even see the shadow of sand and dust when it's on Earth, nevermind on the Moon.

    Hi Destin, I know getting sponsors on UA-cam can be difficult, but if you're not already aware, I think you should do some googling about 23andMe and it's very controversial business model and the ethical considerations of having such a company as a sponsor. It's actually quite a complicated issue but I'll try to summarize some of the main problems: 1. providing medical information to consumers without context and outside of a patient-physician environment. Ask your family physician the next time you see them, or ANY physician for that matter, about their opinions surrounding 23andMe and you'll see what I mean. The general public has a very poor understanding of "risk" as a concept (it's sad but true) and when most people in the general public see a result saying their genetics have a risk for a disease, they'll interpret that as they will definitely get it. 2. many of their results are meaningless. A good fraction of the diseases they purport to show risk for are diseases that would have been diagnosed at birth or in early childhood. And the ones that present later in life that they test, many of them have risks modulated far more by lifestyle choices than genetics. 3. they sell your personal genetic information to pharmaceutical companies for profit. Their ulterior motive becomes even more obvious when you realize the founder is the ex-wife of a Google founder and younger sister of a top Google advertising executive.
    I hope you'll reconsider having 23andMe as a sponsor in the future. There's a lot of better written articles out there documenting what I've said here, if you have the time, do some googling and see for yourself. Thanks for all the hard work and great videos Destin!

      Moonspear . not to be rude, but to start a conversation; your points 1 and 2 are kinda pointless to me. Saying a company shouldn't exist because the technology doesn't provide information to the extent that YOU want is childish. Your dna is there, they help you access some information, do what you want with it. thats it. It should always be consumers' responsibility to educate themselves about tests and results. I don't believe that we should rely solely on the medical industry to decide what happens to us. Basically, its YOUR body, it's YOUR responsibility to fix it. medics are there only to help provide services greater than our own capabilities. Hey, kinda like 23andme.

      I think Lauren J. really has a point!

    • @moonspear
      @moonspear 7 років тому +10

      Following your logic then, why do we need family doctors at all? If it's our body and our responsibility, then why don't we just WebMD our symptoms and never see a real doctor? Imagine if everyone could just order their own blood tests and interpret the results themselves. Oh I have high blood glucose, guess that means I have diabetes, time to start taking insulin? I think you, and everyone else, would find that ridiculous. There's a reason why blood tests are only ordered through physicians and interpreted by physicians before being released and discussed with patients... for the patients' BENEFIT. And /trust me/ when I say that the results from genetic testing is magnitudes more difficult to understand properly than the results of a standard blood test. If you wouldn't order a blood test without your doctor, why do genetic testing without your doctor? Most family physicians aren't even 100% comfortable doing genetic testing themselves and would refer you to a specialist, such as a clinical geneticist.

    • @jrdn.lauren
      @jrdn.lauren 7 років тому +4

      Moonspear . your comparison is completely misleading. How can you compare ordering a test to ordering a perscription drug? Two vastly different things with very different consequences. Not only that, blood glucose testers cost $60 at your local drug store. I don't believe knowledge should be withheld, especially knowledge about our own body. Do we need trained proffesionals to help interpret that data? OF COURSE! But if you have a condition (for example) I don't see whats so wrong about being able to walk into a lab and requesting a test.
      For example. If I'm dificient on Vitamin D, I could keep an eye on it without having to go to a doctor! The labs always include normal ranges for all the routine tests anyways.

    Hey, SmarterEveryDay! I think you should do a video on the physics of skydiving! I think it would be very interesting to see what you find, and it would also be fun for you! I absolutely love your channel, and thank you for the work you put into it!

    I can't imagine how his download rate has skyrocketed today because of this. I'm making a road trip from Austin, TX back home to TN to see the eclipse and couldn't be more thankful for the heads up on the timing/app!

    Hey Dustin, I love your videos I watch them all the time. I actually really like your videos about flight training as I am in the process of becoming a fighter pilot for the United States Navy. Your videos give me insight into training i'll possible partake in someday. Maybe i'll be able to bring something different to your channel for you someday, which can be my unique way of saying thanks for the videos!!!!
