IS IT EVEN POSSIBLE? - SwT 169 - SAILING THROUGH SOUTH PACIFIC CYCLONE SEASON

  • Join me on this amazing adventure as I leave Fiji and set sail for Indonesia on a 3000 nautical mile journey. Some say it is crazy some say it's impossible. I say it is doable with modern yacht and technology, knowledge and a good strategy. In this video I am sharing my strategy and how I am executing this challenging sail as I am starting on this journey. Several challenges in sailing such long distances during south Pacific cyclone season, from Fiji to Indonesia. The obvious one is of course cyclones, but light winds and changing winds are just as big a challenge.

    ABOUT THIS CHANNEL:
    Sailing around the world in a Bavaria 55 Cruiser, making videos whenever we have time for it.
    Even though this is season 6 on UA-cam I did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I sailed several seasons in the Mediterranean prior to, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and have also been an active regatta sailor. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing ever since. Also, more than 10 years of experience in Search and Rescue at sea in Norway.
    PLEASE BE KIND IN THE COMMENTS!
    I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things that might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don't think I can learn new things I should go ashore.

    I like what you are trying to do here during cyclone season. Risky for you, an education for the rest of us. Getting stuck in Vanuatu wouldn’t be so bad. Santo is a beautiful island with great Kava.

    Solo sailing can be more difficult then crewed BUT the satisfaction & knowing you have completed the trip iether short or long is a feeling that is the most enjoyable , The peace & tranquility on a star filled watch is hard to beat & the old saying >If you think about reefing , Do it< comes in to play . Sorry you didnt make it down to NZ , Fair winds .

    Many thanks for your videos and all the information you teach us. Now when you talk about cyclone seasons don't you want to talk about insurance and insurance companies in relation to solo sailing in general and hurricane/cyclone seasons in particular?
    Snowy and cold greetings from Sweden 💕😄😀🇸🇪

    • @SailingwithThomas
      @SailingwithThomas  8 місяців тому

      Thank you so much for watching, and your questions. Insurance is a challenge for sailing solo in general as not all companies accept this without really good documentation of experience. As for cyclones and named storms no insurance cowering you during cyclone season. So this is a risk, but then again sitting in a marina in a cyclone zone is in my opinion even a greater risk. Also my experience with insurance is not that good end of the day. In San Andres my insurance would cover me, but I did not like the idea watching BE FREE being destroyed and sink. So I sailed away for safety. If I stayed where my insurance would cover me, I would not have BE FREE anymore. Unfortunately during my evacuation I also helped three useless sailors to safety. This cost me the rest of my budget and an expensive lesson learned. The damages from lightning was not covered as I sailed in rainy season in the region south of San Andres. So insurance are not to be trusted end of the day, still I have insurance because lots of places will not let you in without one. But if it’s worth the money I’m not so sure anymore. All the best

    Thank you so much for actually reading and answering my comments,means a lot to me and makes it a more personal experience : )
    I really appreciate your approach to what is possible for you and not making it general rules for all the world.
    I am in the center of Europe with no salt water around and all we here is how the weather is going crazy more and more,with all this climate change/warming nonsense going on and news are highly exaggerated.Weather was always changing.All we hear is about terrible Cyclones and hurricanes always so its hard to actually know whats the daily routine in regions like you are.Also its not like a hundred years ago with all the satellites and tech available like you mentioned also.
    Times are different,and its nice of you to let us see in almost real time what is possible and what not as a sailor today.
    GOD bless you and your family

    Good Morning Thomas, May i ask why you are not visiting Australia?

    • @SailingwithThomas
      @SailingwithThomas  8 місяців тому

      Good morning, I have many reasons. First of all it’s to much red tape and to expensive. The entire coast all the way south to Sidney are heavily exposed to cyclones, and very few places to anchor. Also I wanted to keep sailing not sit and wait somewhere expensive. I did have this in my initial plans and budgets. But after the lightning damages while helping those sailors last year my cruising budget is destroyed. My insurance bailed on me. So I basically could not defend the cost at this moment. All the best

      My of grid capacity is 6 months and not much difference sitting at anchor vs sailing. I have a huge storage of basic food onboard and water maker. For this trip I even stocked up a bit extra but mostly things considered as nice treats if tired and bad weather. The timeframe is impossible to guess this time of year as constant wind changes and even lack of wind will be demanding. Anything between 20 and 40 days is realistic. All the best

      Thank you so much for watching and for your questions as well.
      The Drake passage requires a different type of yacht for a safe passage. It’s not on my wishlist as it’s cold and extremely rough due to colliding waters with different temperatures, and also extreme wind conditions. It’s unnecessary risk and a totally different ballgame.
      So far I have only been on the other side, rescuing sailors both with BE FREE and earlier as captain on SAR vessels in Norway. Luckily never needed assistance or to be rescued myself.

    Have you spoke to Erik Aanderaa? He is a genuine bad weather sailor (on YT) and a great source of knowledge?
    Do Cyclones not spring in existence without a pre-tell-warning? How do you stay safe when a cyclone DOES form when youre already on passage?
    Can you rig the vessel in a way to sail "through" a cyclone/or survive during the ordeal without breaking things?

    • @SailingwithThomas
      @SailingwithThomas  8 місяців тому

      I have never spoken to Erik but did send him a message a while ago. Guess he just as me get to many messages and struggles to keep up.
      I have sailed through a few cyclones at the lower end of the scale. It’s no fun, and can be pretty dangerous. Weather predictions do fail sometimes but mostly today’s information is quite accurate. Looking at weather predictions alone is not enough. But with experience and knowledge knowing what to look for it’s possible to have an opinion ahead of the predictions. Sometimes I predict a cyclone as much as 5 days before the contours are even visible in different apps. This is because I know the needed ingredients to stir the recipe into a cyclone. Decades of experience and genuine interest for weather.
      A cyclone doesn’t just pop out of a box from nowhere without a warning.
      That’s why this kind of sailing is nothing I recommend. It takes experience and knowledge. Not to forget a seaworthy boat with a long range capacity by diesel engine. All the best and thank you for good questions and for being here

      Hey Cliff! Thank you so much for watching and even sharing. Fiji is absolutely amazing and one of very few groups of islands I could enjoy living full time. All the best my friend

      Godt spørsmål! Jeg har ingen jobb utenom UA-cam nå, og det er hardt arbeid for ekstremt lite penger. Om jeg ikke følte at jeg hadde kommet så langt og investert så mye i denne kanalen er jeg usikker på om det er verd det. Men håper fortsatt at inntekter her og fra Patreons kan hjelpe meg videre. Jeg hadde budsjett for 5 år og hadde aldri UA-cam i tankene for å klare meg. Det er i virkeligheten en ønskedrøm. Så nå begynner det faktisk å bli svært stram økonomi, og jeg er faktisk litt usikker på veien videre. To år med nedstengning av verden forsinket meg kraftig, og det kostet absurd mye. Mitt budsjett var svært romslig for både vedlikehold og daglig liv. Mitt budsjett fikk en alvorlig knekk etter at jeg hjalp tre seilere utenfor Panama og fikk skader etter lynnedslag. Forsikring som vred seg unna ansvaret, og alt som måtte erstattes fra egen lomme etter dette. Så akkurat nå er det ikke så enkelt. Jeg har vært forsiktig med pengene, og trodde jeg hadde en god plan. Men som sagt, pandemi og Lyn er ting som var utenfor min påvirkningsmulighet.
      Jeg solgte alt hjemme for å klare dette her. Håper det var oppklarende for deg. Takk for at du er her og for spørsmålet.
