SAILING SOLO 1500 NAUTICAL MILES NONSTOP PART 1 of 2 - SwT 159 - Revealing more secrets

  • BE FREE is setting sail towards the Kingdom of Tonga. This is a 1500 nautical miles nonstop solo sailing adventure and the longest I have sailed solo in the last 2 years. My previous long-distance solo sailing was 1300 miles nonstop from Martinique to Panama, not 1200 as I said. This time it's a really beautiful sail in the South Pacific Ocean, and even found time to play around with music and edit most of this episode including the new intro. The region between Tahiti and all the way to Fiji that's 500 miles west of Tonga is famous for unpredictable weather, and often strong winds. This is not far from New Zealand that have a huge influence on the weather here, and also the temperature is dropping quite a lot at night.
Now setting sail toward new horizons with new adventures it was natural to me to also change the intro and even change the intro song. I have remixed and tweaked a lot of the original that previously was used at the end of all my episodes. The new version is both in the beginning and modified at the end. But the same theme and sound. I hope you like the small changes I have made.

    ABOUT THIS CHANNEL:
Sailing around the world in a Bavaria 55 Cruiser, making videos whenever we have time for it. I used to sail singlehanded and occasionally have sailing friends onboard. But now the permanent crew aboard BE FREE is including Gee from Holland. We are now exploring the Pacific Ocean.
Even though this is season 6 on UA-cam I did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I sailed several seasons in the Mediterranean prior to this, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and have also been an active regatta sailor. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing ever since. Also, more than 10 years of experience in Search and Rescue at sea in Norway.
PLEASE BE KIND IN THE COMMENTS!
I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things that might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don't think I can learn new things I should go ashore.

I was once on a boat full of people during a day race and one guy (a very experienced sailor of many years) took a step just as the boat hit an unusual wave and he went right through the lifelines so fast it was unbelievable. I noticed the lifelines at your stern look loose and not much "life" in them. Also, I noticed you never wear flotation. I really like your videos and I hope you keep making them for many years to come.

YES!!!!!, That's that kind of downwind tactic, i choose for myself years ago the same thing going downwind. In german, we call upwind sailing "kreuzen" which means "crossing", but there is no term for doing the same thing downwind, so i called that "downind kreuzen" or-crossing for myself since then, and i always do so. I hate that rolling movement straight downwind and i find it much, much more exhausting. For the rigg, i imagine the difference like putting your hand on a table and a hammer on top doesn't harm, but let the hammer fall down on your hand every few seconds hurts a lot, and doing that for long, long duration is destroying . I literally. feel the ring suffering and surely approaching the moment of something breaking. Haven't thought about speed advantage, but supposed, sometimes yes, sometimes no.

down wind sailing with a Kite is so cool. It goes way up and does a figure 8 but can double your speeds for a Catamaran. I bet you could add 4-5 knots easy using one. I am thinking of a Electric cat with tons of solar and batteries with tall sails. Times when even your big Code's don't really help going up higher gets you into another layer of wind. Just saying even in 10mph winds at 200' will pull you. you just need to use the electric winch to bring it in and a release line so when its close it fall where you want it too. Think of how a parachute catches the wind. Besides of you find yourself in middle of ocean and no wind but have sun you just take time to enjoy the time and swim, Fish or take a nap. I like the person you are. That is why I watch your channel. Keep being you.

That's an excellent demonstration of tacking downwind instead of going straight.
I didn't notice if you mentioned it is also cooler in hot weather because going straight makes the apparent wind very light.
And sailing 300 miles in less than 24 hours isn't just pretty good, that's smoking for a unimaran! (monohull)
Crossing an ocean single handed isn't the same when you have videos to watch and to make, auto pilot, freezer and refrigerator, and so much more than we had back in the late 60's and early 70's. We were very happy to have a windvane and electric running lights. A working motor with an alternator was a real bonus! Navigation was a sextant and a stopwatch to get the time off the radio and sun sights.
I like your way much better!

Thank you so much for watching and for taking you time to even leave a nice comment. It’s not so easy with schedule and sailing, and even to find crew you want onboard. I have been lucky and mostly had nice people onboard. To take strangers onboard for the long sailing distance ahead is not tempting. I do meet lots of sailors and even crew jumping ships. It seams to be difficult to have people you don’t know in such compact space. And sometimes it can even be a burden. So for now it’s better for me to just keep moving and get BE FREE out of the Cyclone zones ASAP. Sad to not reach Australia this year, but who knows. Maybe things looks better next year.

Yeah it is definitely a change going on. Not only is it more paperwork but more and more expensive as well. I do believe the easy sailing nomadic life for average people are coming to an end. Tahiti seems to not want sailors anymore, same goes for lots of islands. Unless your pocket are full of dollars and you have a big boat staying in marina only.

What a fantastic episode, Thomas! I imagine it's not an easy time but like James Frederik on SY Triteia, who was stood up the day before departing SoCal for a circumnavigation, you're bouncing back for epic adventure. I especially enjoyed the VMG downwind strategy - I never understood wing-on-wing because of the slop and wear - and we also learn you have real musical proclivities. Fantastic sailing footage too. When they're impulsive and flighty you carry on doing your best work. Salut!
