Tipping is a horrible practice designed to make the customer feel bad and the server feel anxious. so the owner has to pay lower wages. Tipping is bad and shouldn't be allowed.
In the US if they ban tipping they just won't increase pay regardless, and the servers will just get fucked both ways. It's not like banning tipping will magically force the state politicians to pay them well. The restaurant profit models have been built upon shit pay for the servers.
They'd have to increase pay to a certain extent as most already take into account tips as part of the hourly wage. Without taking into account tips they'd have to at least pay minimum wage then to compensate - usually double what restaurants currently would pay servers per hour. Also note that servers and bartenders actually tend to make the most money in restaurants here in the states, it's the cooks and cleaners that often get shafted.
Yeah but federal min wage, and in most states, state min wage isn't a livable wage. Most of these servers would just leave to find different jobs accordingly. And what you would be left with is the bottom of the barrel employees that can't get anything but min wage jobs anyways and therefore customers end up with far worse service. Tipping, in this current landscape is a necessary evil, in my opinion. @@fakesmilez1
As a Chinese American I can say that everything they said was mostly correct about Chinese food. The food there was dull, bland, tasteless, etc. Boiled chicken and steamed fish are probably the most popular meat even though they have zero taste at all. The food there focuses on making your mouth “feel” good and having a nice aroma, but taste wise there isn’t much there. Even when you go to the butcher, your chances of finding a simple steak, pork chop, or chicken breast is almost zero. It was one of the only things I hated about my trip back to China, beside the lack of internet of course. Also they are wrong about Chinese sausages. That shit is amazing
Pyrion, it's not a myth. In America, federally, wages for tipped position are expected to be made up by tips, up to a certain point that's less than minimum
First episode to appear in my feed in 2 months! Episode 83 was the last one I watched... What are you playing at UA-cam? Why have these episodes not been showing up?
Sips' childhood job of grocery car packers is still a job at a lot of grocery stores in the US. Also, with the U.S. tipping in restaurants is necessary because service workers make a sub minimal wage because they are tipped.
Having worked four years at front desk in a hotel, you guys aren't far off on some the awkward, weird stuff that happens. Now excuse me while I rebleach my eyes and brain.
The best "2 for 1" deal i ever saw was for 2 bags of supermarket own brand Sour Cream and Onion Chips. They had 1 for about 20 DKK, but 2 for about 17 DKK. It was literally cheaper to buy 2.
When I went to China I had similar issues with food. In the cities its garbage, all the wierdest stuff ever. But the rural areas had actually good fresh pork and rice with vegtables.
It doesn't take forever to get a tolerance but you can get extremely bad cramps, indigestion, or an allergic reaction from the intensity. The incredible heat is caused by extracting the heat of the chilis into oil. If you can handle synthetic or extracted hot sauces it shouldn't be too difficult - not that I know from experience - but I've had a few chili oils
I'm in Wisconsin USA. What Pflax said is true, for servers/bartenders/delivery drivers etc. tips are included in the wages so when I was a waitress I made like... $4.50 an hour because based on average tips you made about $8.50 an hour. As I know it, that's still how it works. And we also have people who bag our groceries (assuming we don't go through the self checkout) Sometimes they'll offer to help bring them to the car but very rarely. So that's still going on here.
40:10 In America most places that workers get tips at (servers, bartenders, ect.) get a base wage of like $2.50-$5.50 an hour plus tips. The only time the business gives money that the worker "should have earned" is at each paycheck if the amount is not equal to what the worker would have made on minimum wage ($7.25). So say you work one day, make bank and get $300 in tips. but the next day you only get $50 im tips. You will not be reimbursed for that day's work because at the end of the week the paycheck is over minimum wage.
Wait wait wait, hold up, Did Pyrion just call Chongqing, the third largest city in China, and the industrial center of the country, rural? Chongqing is up there with Beijing and Shanghai lol. It is probably about as far from "rural" as you could get. It also is one of the fastest growing tourist cities in the world, so idk how the dota guys couldn't find food.
Chinese cities are not always cities packed with buildings. A lot of the area is still used for farming etc so even larger cities can feel pretty rural. Only about a third of people in Chongqing live in what we would immediately register to us as a city.
Also Sips i don't know about the UK but in America they do that if something's 2 for 5 you can just get one and it's 2.50. Unless it's buy one get one free then you gotta buy one and just get the other one free. The reasons they do buy 2 for 5 is to convince people to buy 2.
As far as tips go to the delivery driver for your groceries I think it really depends on how you ordered them. If it was through the grocery store itself I'd say no, as they should already be getting paid for their time there and these also often already have a delivery fee. That said if it is through an app such as grubhub or instacart, then yes you probably should tip as they get paid very little for the work and distance traveled to do this for you.
anyone remember where that story lewis talked about is from, the one where someone got given the wrong hotel keycard? I'm pretty sure I've heard it myself as well
Both Bombay and Mumbai are names used by native Indians, same with a lot of the names since a lot of them have multiple versions. It's not clear where Bombay comes from since the pronunciation has been really fluid in history, so it could from the tutelary goddess or from Portugese for "good bay".
in the US restaurant servers generally make only a few dollars an hour (some cities require them to be paid minimum wage though). it's legal because it's expected that they'll be able to make a living wage through tips. idk about food delivery services but I just think it's polite because their hourly wage probably isn't great. I think 10-15% is acceptable for food delivery but 15-20% is pretty standard for restaurants and haircuts and stuff. some stores have grocery baggers still! they're not super common at big chains like Walmart but local and regional chains have them (Thriftway in the PNW, Giant in MD/PA, etc.). usually they just have cashiers do it though.
@@kwazooplayingguardsman5615 because of tips or their payroll wage? everyone I know who's worked in the restaurant industry talks about only making 1.25-3 dollars an hour "officially" (minimum wage here is 7.25/hr). they obviously take home much more due to tips though.
so japan sees tips as an insult because its seen as a way of saying that you don't think they can sustain themselves of their food. but they do have a table fee that you have to pay and for it you get bread and a drink.
I think a lot of the reason you can't really haggle in the U.K is a lot of places are big companies, and so it's not really up to the cashier or whoever to give a discount, unless specifically told they can, franchises are obviously different as its not a huge chain to get to a decision, but I have a friend who worked at co-op and was fired because he took sandwiches that we meant to be going in the bin because of used by dates, slightly different scenario but shows that if they're not willing to let you take waste products they're unlikely to be happy about you giving discounts
Also on the complaining about food front, my dad has on a few occasions gone and complained about the food we received, one occasion was moldy bread another was food just dripping with grease, on both occasions we didn't have to pay and got a free round of drinks
The hole sandwiches to the bin ordeal is likely because the corporation is liable if the employee were to get sick from eating them. Thus why in the States you will see that many grocery stores will have locks on their dumpsters. Not saying that this is okay or how things should be, more so just explaining the rational a company would have.

In the US the minimum wage for servers at restaurants is below minimum wage but servers actually make pretty good money. The few states that have attempted to raise the minimum wage of servers to the national standard actually caused them to make less money.
re: weird food. Imperial cuisine was all about the rarity and exoticness of the ingredients, so if you could make a delicate plate of sculpted hummingbird tongues in a sauce of camel nipple shavings then that was what pleased the Emperor, and they would put 50 dishes like that out and he would come out and take a nibble from 3 of them then it would all get thrown out. I don't personally eat it but organ meat is way more nutrient rich than regular muscle meat so even though it may be gross (personally) it does have a fairly good reason to be eaten, also Lewis meat isn't unhealthy it's actually very good for you and a excellent source of nutrients and while yes you can eat vegetables and fruits that have those nutrients they aren't as bioavailable as those found in meat, that's not to say there isn't immoralities when it comes to factory farming and the like because there definitely is, however it is a semi-necessary evil because without it millions would die of starvation and the price of other meat products would skyrocket...so unless people start eating more bugs this will remain an issue and probably even so after, it is possible to successfully maintain a health diet that is purely vegan but it takes much more effort and research to find which fruits and vegetables have better bioavailability than the rest but even still you will most likely need to take supplements

Sausage casings are made of intestines, it's not that weird.

As a fervent barf-sexual, I find this EXTREMELY offensive.
DON'T eat fried food in a poor part of China, Lots of people get Gutter Oil to cook with
I wouldn't call chongqing poor..
HEB still has baggers
Whelp, I have no disabilities and I make $15/hour bagging groceries.
Who remembers when episodes were an hour and a half long ☹️
Hey there, Triforce! Long-time viewer/listener, rare/if ever commenter,
From a production/editing standpoint, would it be significantly more difficult to include face-cams with the podcast recordings? And if this has already been addressed, I apologize. Regardless, keep up the good work!
Hahaha this makes me want to both go to and never go to chong qing for a visit. I spell the name correct, right?
