    Open letter to the YOGs: Lewis is right. We DON'T know about all the thousands of channels you have because they're not advertised anywhere or even mentioned. They just crop up overnight for every tiny niche thing and exist for MONTHS before (usually Lewis) has an off-the-cuff mention of it on the main channel. Today I Played, Games Night, Team Double Dragon, hell even THIS channel existed in obscurity for ages because there's no way to know they even exist.

      AGree to disagree I stumbled across almost all those channels accidentally because I was actually interested in the content so they would show up in recommended videos etc. I think the people that don't see them are the people that actually watch all the crap (IMO) that is now on the main channel, the livestreams, games nights, Tom and Simon and the podcasts are where it's at for the old school, rude, crude Yogscast I've always loved.

    @Pyrion, yes, the boiling oil thing actually happened historically. Strongholds were designed in such a way that there are "murder holes" directly above vital points (like above a gate) from where the defenders could rain down arrows, heavy rocks or various liquids. Historically though, burning, molten pitch or simple boiling water was more common than boiling oil. It's pretty fucking gruesome if you think about it, but it was effective as hell, that's why it was so popular. The whole point was to deter the attacking force from breaking your gate down with a simple battering ram or a couple of lads with axes. The reason why an attacking force would like to break a gate down instead of a long siege is that the defending force may have a army coming to relieve the siege, and taking the castle fast is the only option for victory, since they could then use its defenses against the new attacking force. Building catapults or other siege engines also takes a lot of time and manpower, much more time than simply felling a large tree and using it as a battering ram.

    The dark ages were actually mis-sold, to some extent. The idolization of classical antiquity started distorting our view of the middle-ages since the renaissance period to basically modern day, although this has started to change in contemporary understanding of history. A peasant in the Carolingian empire wasn't really worse off than the one living in 16th century HRE. There was a noteworthy amount of innovation and development during the middle ages, and honestly there was no sharp turn in quality of life for most people after the renaissance period.

  • @Usmodlover
    @Usmodlover 5 років тому

    A few points about medieval warfare:
    1. Medieval times were indeed not that bad, in fact even most peasants (at least outside of times of famine, which was usually due to unpredictable weather or enemy action) ate fairly well, often the same sort of things you'll find in organic grocery stores today. There are some videos on the topic that are quite interesting. By no means did the medieval peasant farmer lead a luxurious or comfortable life, but it was a possible if back-breaking life.
    2. Yep, boiling oil while cliche, was only really used in places where it could be sourced from natural oil geysers, tar pits, etc. Boiling water and sand were far more common, as were much more simple things like throwing rocks and boulders onto attackers.
    3. Flaming arrows were hardly ever used in the ancient and medieval world. Prior to the invention of gunpowder one would have to not only apply an incendiary substance to the head, but also conceive a way to protect the flame from extinguishing and still being able to set things on fire.

      Pitch, oil, and cotton were some of the largest imports from Iraq and Iran along the silk roads. If you had the money you could very easily get your hands on the stuff for military purposes. Creating Greek Fire from Iraqi oil was pretty common as a weapon of war in late antiquity and the middle ages.

    Just a note to what Pyrion was saying about everyone having a choice. In reality that often times people are stuck in situations without a real choice. Often times call centers will target mid sized cities with declining industry. Although on the surface this seems like a good thing, providing a large amount of jobs in an area that needs them, what ends up happening is the people of the city will become dependent on the call center to provide such a large pool of jobs for them, that they essentially lose all negotiating power. As a result, they often times get stuck in dead end jobs with very low wages and are often even treated quite badly by their employers. This is why a lot of these call centers end up working with less then credible businesses, and can demand incredibly immoral acts of their employees without any real consequences.
    Unfortunately these call centers are often owned by huge international conglomerates in the dozens across the world, so even in countries with somewhat reasonable standards, if too much negative attention starts to come in the way of a call center, the conglomerate just closes it down and opens up a new one in another country for less money to do even seedier jobs.
    Genuinely if these people had any choice, they would undoubtedly jump the hell on it.

    • @Nero-ho6gt
      @Nero-ho6gt 5 років тому

      1) "In reality that often times people are stuck in situations without a real choice." --- No friend, being "stuck" in a dead-end job living paycheck to paycheck is a choice... the other choices are: learn a skill to get a skilled labor job, apply for a more preferable unskilled labor job, become a criminal, go to prison (for the food and housing), become homeless, or die.
      2) "Often times call centers will target mid sized cities with declining industry, etc. etc." --- That's true, but you can always leave that city. When business declines in an area, the once needed workforce isn't supposed to stay in the area... theyre supposed to follow the jobs or (choose this one --->) become self sufficient. In this context a workforce which far exceeds the job supply available diminishes the worker's value and results in them being far more expendable than a limited supply of workers and a job in high demand... which obviously increases the worker's value and negotiating power. This is the "git gud" clause ;)
      3) "...treated quite badly by their employers. This is why a lot of these call centers end up working with less then credible businesses, and can demand incredibly immoral acts of their employees without any real consequences.
      " --- I wont deny that one lol.
      The burden of freedom is responsibility for yourself. If you are not self reliant and self sufficient, then you are a slave to others and can never truly be free.

    • @tudeslildude
      @tudeslildude 5 років тому +1

      @@Nero-ho6gt I mean... its nice you have such a simplistic black and white view of things i guess... but that's not really how reality ends up working out.
      Having a choice between working a dead end job, becoming a criminal or becoming homeless, isn't really a choice...
      I mean, technically it kind of is, but it seems to me when your given an option of choosing 1 thing or being fked, its not so much a choice as an ultimatum.
      Ultimately, sure there's some degree of self reliance one is forced to depend on in this world generally, but circumstances play a huge role in how life plays out.
      Do you honestly think everyone can just reach out and grab unlimited opportunity? If so wouldn't everyone just do that then? Why would most people in the scenarios not just take the skill and change trade if it were that simple? Seems like there might be something more holding people back sometimes.
      Also just for the sake of argument... if everyone at said call center moved away to get new jobs... that there wouldn't be a much larger competition getting said jobs what with an entire call center worth of people looking? Secondly lets assume they do all find jobs that are better. What are the consequences of one of the largest employers of the city going under, along with the massive population loss in said city? Seems like a lot of other people would start to feel that economic impact quite quickly.
      Life is incredibly complicated, so i would recommend not trying to overly simplify views, or if you lack the ability to, perhaps at least acknowledge that about yourself and leave thinking about such complicated issues to people more fit to do so.

      When poor English settlers started migrating to North America via private ventures (military and other government funded journeys at least provided education on and resources to deal with the reality of North American climate), the venture capitalists who provided the transportation didn't know fuck all about North America and had some serious miscalculations. Many of the settlers thought that the lower latitude would make the weather similar to Spain and North Africa and so they prepared for the tropics. As a result two thirds of them would end up dead from starvation and hypothermia.

    From my experience in the Finnish marines, it's a lot of sitting around doing nothing and then being in a terrible hurry to do something trivial. Then you immediately sit there doing nothing again.

      @@skylanderspizza It's the classic case of "What about the starving kids in Ethiopia?" We all know it's worse somewhere else, but we mainly care about what's happening to us, as a typical human. It's a little more exaggerated in the US, but still...

      Don't even play like Farenheit isn't the superior measurement. I think the month-day-year is just the difference in how we say it compared to brits. Brits usually say "the sixth of February" where Americans say "February sixth."
