  • Dr. Samer Dajani tackles one of the most controversial issues in Islamic intellectual history: the relationship between Sufism and Islamic law. This complex and nuanced topic has been a point of contention among scholars, theologians, and practitioners within the Islamic tradition for centuries. Sufism, known for its mystical and esoteric dimensions, often emphasizes the inner, spiritual journey of the believer, while Islamic law, or Sharia, is said to be concerned with the outer, legalistic aspects of religious practice and societal governance. The talk will explore how these two facets of Islam intersect, overlap, and sometimes conflict.
Dr. Samer Dajani is a Palestinian-Jordanian scholar and author. He received his License in Islamic Scholarship (Alim-iyya Degree) with Distinction from Al-Salam Institute (London), which is endorsed by Nadwat al-Ulama (Lucknow). He received his BA in Arab & Islamic Civilizations from the American University in Cairo, followed by an MA and PhD in Islamic Studies from SOAS, University of London. His primary interests are: 1) Hadith Science, 2) Jurisprudence, with a focus on the methodologies of the different Sunni schools, and theories on legal diversity and the merciful nature of the Shari’a.
