Not a woman myself but I can definitely see why women, feel more vulnerable. I also agree pepper spray should be legal for self defence in the UK. I am a disabled person and use a pair of walking sticks, when out and about. Maybe the best alternative to pepper spray one could use legally. Would be a metal spray can of deodorant, something with a strong scent. And you can legally carry it whenever you're out.

When I moved back to the UK from years in the US I had a key ring pepper spray and didn't think about it at all. US airport security let me through ( pre 9/11 security) UK let me in with it and it stayed on my key ring for at least a year. Then the local police force had a weapons amnesty which they advertised and listed illegal weapons. I went to the local police station to hand it in and told them the story when they asked how I got it in the first place (pre internet selling). When I asked how I could protect myself they pointed to my legs and said 'run'!

I’m from Northeast England. Guns are a fairly normal thing here, because we have lots of livestock on Farms, so shotguns are used as pest control. We have a lot of hunting here, too. Pheasant, hare, rabbit and deer mostly. We even have fishing tackle and gun shops. In my house we have a rifle, next door to me has multiple guns, and my local farm has guns on the premises, too. We even hear them clay pigeon shooting often in the summertime. I’ve personally never known any guns being used for crime, and murder by guns is very unusual here. I believe we’re almost all incredibly responsible gun owners because of the fact that it takes very thorough checks before you’re cleared to own them, which is a really good thing. It always makes me wonder why the people in the US are very anti-gun control, because in my experience it makes for more responsible gun ownership

  • @Andy-xt3mh

Gun law: For a shotgun you need a permit that gives you a background check including criminal records.
For a rifle that includes any pellet gun over 12ft/lb of mussel energy you must also prove you have access to a range and regularly use for sporting purposes. Their's no restrictions on caliber so you can buy a tank.
As a private citizen so police forces, security companies, museums, etc. are exempt totally banned any thing semi-auto chambered in anything spicier than .22lr, anything shorter than 2foot, any barrel length less than a foot long.
Self defence law: you can not carry anything as a weapon for self defence. So no pepper spray as it has no other use or purposes. But if you have a stick because of your gamey leg you can use it for self defence as long as it's reasonable force.

As a dog lover I am saddened when a breed gets banned, but I do understand it. There have been over 300 attacks in the UK this year from American XL bully dogs, with 6 fatalities I believe. I imagine that in most cases, the owners were at fault. However, having the owner prosecuted for manslaughter, doesn't really make up for someone losing their life. If you just say that nobody can have that dog and weigh it up again the cost of implementing a really strict licensing system for ownership of dangerous dogs, which continuously monitors the dogs to ensure they were being raised in the right way, the choice is fairly straightforward. I feel for the dogs and the responsible owners, but unfortunately as other have mentioned, there is a type of weak, insecure male who buys these types of dogs to make themselves appear tough. They even encourage the dogs to be more aggressive. It's these idiots who are to blame.

    • @speleokeir
      @speleokeir 6 місяців тому +6

Most of the banned breeds were originally bred for dog fights NOT pets, so are naturally aggressive, particularly if bored, feeling threatened, or when encountering other dogs. They also have short powerful jaws that can lock on and are incredibly difficult to loosen once they bite. They simply aren't good choices as pets, especially families with children.
Breeds that were originally bred as guard dogs , etc also aren't a great choice as pets. They're usually fine with owners but can be aggressive to anyone entering their territory so need to be well trained. Gun dogs on the other hand such as labradors, retrievers, setters, etc were bred to be passive and have soft mouths with long jaws which means it's easier to prise their jaws apart.
It's also important to give any dog enough exercise to tire it out and stop it getting bored and to give it some basic training. Dogs are pack animals so it's also important for owners to be dominant (i.e head of the pack) otherwise they behave like spoilt kids. You see this a lot with little snappy, yappy terriers where the owners treat them like surrogate children instead of teaching them discipline and whose boss.

    • @jkasaunder228
      @jkasaunder228 6 місяців тому +1

I partly agree with you about the people who want these dogs to be aggressive, but we also need to put blame on owners who take on a dog they cannot control. A family friend of ours bought an XL bully, but the household was not fit for such a dog. That dog would likely still be alive today if it found the right home.
Working dogs need to be worked. They have a job to do and if trained and looked after will do it very well.

@@speleokeir Not a single breed of dog has a jaw which 'locks'. Stop believing whatever nonsense you like the sound of.
You obviously know nothing about different breed traits and are simply repeating myths.
Trust me, after 40 years of showing, breeding, grooming, rescue and behavioural work, I *do* know what I'm talking about.
See the dog in my profile picture? Bulldog X Staffy. Lives with 10 other dogs, including 6 teenaged Chihuahua crosses mostly blind and all grumpy. He lives on my holding with ponies, very ancient cats, chickens and bantams and ducks, including day old chicks and ducklings, plus the odd guinea pig which escapes and runs about loose in summer.
He is polite and respectful to everyone including visiting humans. In fact the local bin men take their break at my place in order to play with my dogs, the biggest of which weighs 65KG and is a Spanish mastiff cross, also 100% polite, respectful and trustworthy with all the animals here. Oh did I mention the large Norfolk lurcher which is also safe around the little animals and only ever chases his ball across the paddock, although he is a great ratter. Merciless and fast.
So explain again about some breeds not being safe being aggressive and wanting to fight.

But then, it's the sort of people who make bad dog owners that tend to go for these aggressive dog breeds. But Britain is far more sensible than the US. Having done jury service three times jury selection in the UK is completely random. People are requested to attend for jury service, all the names are placed in a large bowl and the jury is selected simply by a clerk of the court picking names from the bowl. You can only be excused if you are known to or you know any of the main players in the case to be tried which must be declared. There is absolutely no questionnaire or questioning of jurors by either side involved. Social status, gender, colour, sexuality, ethnicity, political views etc has absolutely no bearing on who can or cannot serve on a jury.

Fun fact: In the UK, judges don't use a Gavel. Air weapons are permitted providing the muzzle velocity is below 12 ft pounds for a rifle and 6 ft pounds for a pistol (unless the law has recently been made even tighter). Anything above that velocity is classified as needing a firearms certificate .Other weapons such as rimfire or shotguns are only permitted upon obtaining a licence, for which you will need to show proper gun cabinet storage/safe, and a very good reason for needing one in the first place. Pepper spray AND stun guns are prohibited and fall into the category of firearms here in Blighty. I also believe that the grey squirrel is classified as vermin, and as such would technically be fair game to be killed with a legal air weapon. The same does not apply to the Red squirrel, which is rightly classified as a protected species, being a native breed.

We have two levels of firearms certificate, Shotgun (Section 2), Firearms (Section 1)
    Shotgun certificate allows:
Single-, double-, or triple-barrelled shotguns, or those with a lever-action, pump-action, or semi-automatic action and fixed magazine capacity of no more than 2 cartridges are permitted on a Shotgun Certificate as long as they meet the criteria of having a minimum barrel length of 24", overall length of 40", and a non-detachable magazine with a capacity of 2 cartridges (if present)
    Firearms allows:
This one is broader and so allows a wider variety of guns, such as rifles and pistols. Would need to go into too much detail for a YT comment to list out what's allowed and what's not.
To apply for a licence you'll need to get a certificate application form from your local police station, and fill it in. It'll ask for a LOT of personal information to ensure you're not a danger to yourself or others. You'll need two "referees" to act as a character reference, details of your GP and the land you're intending to shoot on. For the shotgun certificate you only need to state what kind of shotgun you intend to own, but for the firearms certificate you need to state the exact make and model of the gun(s) you intend to own. You can add more for a fee at a later date if you're intending to own another one. You'll also need to lay out what you intend to do with the shotgun/firearm. Self or home defence is not a valid reason for owning one, in fact self-defence is not considered a valid reason for owning/carrying any implement capable of causing harm - pepper spray included. Once the application is submitted you'll get a home visit from the police to confirm how you intend to store the firearm and ammunition, and further mental wellness checks to confirm safety. Both licences will need to be renewed every 5 years.
You used to be allowed antiques without a licence but I believe in 2021 they changed that to have a separate licencing requirement.

Gun laws: Guns are divided into Firearms and Shotguns - Firearms require a firearms licence issued by the Secretary of State, Shotguns require a shotgun certificate issued by the Chief Constable of your local Constabulary. Some shotguns do require a firearms licence - generally those which are semiautomatic with a magazine capacity above iirc 3 , also some air weapons require a firearms licence - most do not currently.
A firearms licenced may be issued but you must show a valid reason for owning the weapons listed on it - you can add further weapons to the licence but must be do so before you may take ownership. The licence will also list the quantity of ammunition you may hold.
Shotgun certificates will be issued unless the police can show a valid reason that you are not a fit person to hold it. - note that distinction.
Both shotgun certificates and firearms licences will require an inspection of where you intend to store the weapons - they must be stored in a gun safe when not being used or transported and ammunition must be in a separate safe.
Some firearms are classed as category 5 weapons and these are much more difficult to get a licence - this includes most pistols and hand guns, all automatic weapons - yes we can get a licence for them although in most cases they will be required to be stored at a gun club.
Single round pistols are a reasonably common addition to a firearms licence for gamekeepers for the purpose of dispatching game that has been shot but not killed outright. Similarly for those working in an abattoir. Sporting pistols will normally be required to be stored at a licenced range.
Surprisingly a smoothbore cannon requires a shotgun certificate although the powder to fire it will require an explosives licence in addition. Yes we can drive a main battle tank with a functional main gun but use of the gun with live rounds will be restricted to an approved range (I think they are all operated by the MOD) and would need to be fitted with rubber tracks to use on public roads. It could even have a turret mounted heavy machine gun although that would require a category 5 licence.
Neither firearms nor shotguns may be carried in public unless stored in a gun case or otherwise rendered inactive.
Most people think category 5 weapons are banned but it is possible to get a licence to own and fire those but they are subject to much more scrutiny than for a standard firearms licence. There are no actual banned firearms.
There are also some tools which operate using explosive rounds such as some nail guns and riveters which are classed as firearms.
As far as a valid reason to hold a firearm self defence is not valid - if you carry anything for the purpose of self defence it will become an offensive weapon. Note we can use anything for self defence or defence of another person provided we have reason to believe that we or they are at risk of their life or in some cases of serious injury - this would strictly include an illegally held firearm but carrying it explicitly for the purpose of self defence would be considered as going prepared and make the self defence plea very difficult to show. This is what catches the pepper spray as there is no legitimate other use whereas something like a heavy walking stick or shillelagh is an aid to walking but if you are carrying it for the purpose of self defence it becomes an offensive weapon.

But as I am in Northern Ireland our gun laws are a lot less restrictive than on the mainland for example in Britain a pistol has to have a ridiculous long barrel and bar sticking out from the grip were here our handguns are exactly the same as those sold in the US , and just a few miles to the south of my home is the Republic of Ireland were its almost impossible to even own a shotgun.

There is a lot of things that our food processing factories don't do that goes on in America and for a good reason. Yet factory farming is becoming a thing a thing again here is a concern. Although at the same time, how do you feed a growing population?
Never knew there was any laws regarding kites, but flying them near airports does make sense. To be drunk in a pub... erm, well. Guess I've broken that law all throughout my adult life. In saying that, if your a regular at local pubs and the landlords knows about your drinking habits. Then its only when you're absolute shit face that they'll refuse to serve anymore beer and maybe call a taxi for you.
The XL bully thing and the dangerous dog act. That's all come about with sensualisation caused by the news and people getting dogs for the sake of it and using them as a sort of status symbol. Any dog can be be dangerous if not trained properly or has been mishandled and mistreated. When I was out with one of mine, I got talking to someone who mentioned that theirs a couple in the area who have two XL's that they struggle to control and have gotten a Belgian malinois puppy... For those unfamiliar with malinois, they're the breed that are used in the army and need a lot of exercise and mental stimulus for them to be chill. So that's worrying, for the sake of the dogs and people in the area.

If you sell alcohol to a drunk person and they have an accident, the person who sold it is libel. It's illegal to hunt in the UK unless it's your own land, because rich people make the laws. The Bulldog XL have been behind several attacks here in the UK, some leading to death and children mauled and smaller pets killed. Pepper spray is illegal, as are tasers, or anything used as a weapon, if I use my walking stick in a fight, it's now classified as an offensive weapon. What you didn't have in this top ten is defending yourself, if you defend yourself you're only allowed to use reasonable force, if you're getting attacked by a knife wielding gang intending to delete you and you have a shotgun, you can't shoot them, you may even be pushing it if you physically hit one with it.

The gun laws are pretty relaxed to be honest. You can get a shotgun licence at 15 and own one at 16. You just need valid reason to have one. We have plenty of variation of firearms you're allowed to own, even .50 cal and 308 with certain licences.
Your main route is to join a hunting or sporting / shooting club, stay with them at least 1 year and apply for your FAC (firearms certificate) through them, and use them as your character reference. But it's a lengthy process.
It took me 13 month to get my FAC approved for 2 .22lr rifles, they do extensive background checks and do random checks with people like your ex boss' for example. (There's a lot more to it than that)
You've got to show you have good reason to own one, have to store the weapon locked and away from any ammunition, and have to get the police to authorise your storage. You also have the possibility of spot checks to ensure you are upholding the criteria.
Things like handguns are illegal due to them being consealable, however you can get them when they have the long barrel and shoulder stock attached, but that's it.
It's easier if you live on a farm, most farmers own a shotgun these days. And also hunting certain animals is very legal, we've plenty of invasive types of animals here and they need kulled on a regular basis. Again mostly farmers are doing this.
There's SO much more to it but that's the gist of it
