    JT, Anna,
When crisps and snacks in the UK are described as "Prawn Cocktail Flavour", there are no prawns, shrimps or any other kind of fish in them; not only that, but they're not even prawn or shrimp flavour - Their flavour is the sauce that's served over prawns in a prawn cocktail. This is Marie Rose sauce, which is basically tomato flavoured mayonnaise.

traditionally for many years, salt and vinegar were blue in the UK, and cheese and onion were green and yellow, the Walkers messed everything up by making their salt and vinegar green and yellow, older people in the UK still wonder why they did it... many other makers still use blue for salt and vinegar and yellow/green for cheese and onion.

    • @stacywearing8649

That’s been heavily disproven. It’s just a classic case of the mandala affect. You can Easily find it out when no one can give actual dates as to when this happened. There are even 20 year olds saying they remember when they were opposite way round. I’m 38 and they’ve always been the colour they are now. My dad is 73 and doesn’t remember them being being opposite colour.
I genuinely just believe people forget that not all walkers crisps are in the colour way for each type, for example walkers squares. The salt and vinegar are blue and the cheese and onion are green.
I know some people get really offended when I/people point this out, so please don’t come for me.

i'm 49, i lived through it. its true. i litterally have blue salt and vinegar crisp in my kitchen with blue packaging now, made by other brands. not coming at you, just disagreeing. I'm not saying walkers used to be a different colour, they may well have always been those colours, what i'm saying is, there was i time when walkers didn't exist, or weren't widely available, and every other popular readily available brand tended to be blue for salt and vinegar and yellow/green for cheese and onion, when walkers came along or became more popular with their different colours it caused confusion. @@stacywearing8649

Salt and vinegar used to be blue. Made sense. Salt. Sea. Cheese and onion used to be green. Onions. I'm 57. It happened. (Plus the Mandela effect is just people mis-remembering over years or just plain not knowing). Walkers have always been the colours they are but I remember when Golden Wonder were the popular crisp before Walkers became dominant. Golden Wonder where green for cheese and onion. FACT. NOT THE MANDELLA EFFECT.

    • @DavesRabbitHole
      @DavesRabbitHole 8 місяців тому +1

@@antonyeastham4564 Exactly! thank you! I never said Walkers changed their own colours, they were always different as far as I recall, but they didn't always "exist", or certainly weren't always a market leader. Walkers changed the paradigm when they came along with their unintuative "non standard" colours. Golden Wonder and Smiths (I think walkers now own Smiths) were independent back then and were the most popular brands, they were, and maybe still are, blue for S&V, green and yellow for C&O. Benson's were the same, plus the others, and supermarket brands followed suit, it was like an unofficial standard. Re Mandela effect, yes, I believe it comes from a popular trope that people thought he had died long before he did, and when he did eventually die, it confused people that thought he had been dead for ages already, its basically something created by people with bad memories to make them feel better :)

Fun fact! The reason we call ours "Ready Salted" is because when crisps first came around in the UK, they weren't pre-salted, they were in a bag on their own with a small sachet of Salt you could add to the bag, pinch the top and shake to cover the chips in the salt so Ready Salted just refers to the fact that you don't have to salt them yourself anymore!

But, I think you need to have gone to a primary school swimming lesson in 1984 and then eaten a packet of pickled onion Monster Munch (which were more potent then) before the genius of pickled onion crisps can EVER be properly appreciated. Sadly, that would involve time travel which Elon hasn't invented yet (or has he?!).
It must have been the way the radioactive pickled onion flavouring mingled with the residual chlorine coating everything that created a tween sensory fever dream.
      Happy days! Though probably toxic.

Something I found out recently, is that the Prawn Cocktail crisps are actually made from Tomatoes. My fave Walker of all time is Cheese and Onion. The Coronation Chicken was also really good, but that one was only released for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, I believe. Fun Fact: Walkers and Lays are the same, but Walkers have been around since the late 1940's until they were bought by PepsiCo in 1989 and Lays were created for other markets. Pepsi kept the name Walkers in the UK to ensure brand loyalty.

Decades later a salt your own version came back on the shelves with a little blue bag of salt, for the nostalgic.

Loved this. (1) Worcester Sauce - pronounced 'wooster' sauce folks, its a town in UK. Worster Sauce and Marmite Walkers are proper top 5 tier flavour crisp in UK, in my opinion. (2) Basic prawn cocktail 'chips' and much better than the Quavers. (3) if you eat any form of spicey sauce with your diet, none of those crisps should be 'hot', just a little kick (4) Pickled Onion is awesooome and Monster Munch is best! (5) Squares are best version of Salt & Vinegar.
Generally, there is no bad flavour crisp in UK. UK has best crisps and corn snacks in the world.
If folks try some other brands from UK, I'd recommend McCoys, Brannigans, Jacobs Chedders and Nik Naks - some different flovours that are very good. Keep doing this stuff, so gooood!

Quavers and Monster Munch were originally made by Smith's Crisps and Watsits were made by Golden Wonder now part of Walkers and in turn walkers was eventually bought by the US Pepsi co in 1998, where the Walkers logo red ribbon over a yellow sun was transferred to Pepsi co's other European snack / crisp division Lays.

When I was growing up the two major UK brands of crisps/snacks were Smiths and Golden Wonder. And crisps were royal blue = ready salted; light blue = salt and vinegar; green = cheese and onion. Then at some point in the mid-late 80s this 'new' brand appeared down south called Walkers. And their bag colours were the opposite, so we were always grabbing the wrong flavour. Within the space of 2-3 years Golden Wonder had disappeared off the shelves and supermarkets stocked only Walkers or their own brand, with Smiths only selling the plain/blue salt bag or snack products. Golden Wonder's roast chicken crisps were the best; Walkers' cricken crisps taste too much like stuffing. Their crisps are also thinner so when you open a bag it's mostly crumbs. Also, their bags were also several grams less content than the other brands for the same money (or more).
The best flavours for me are the meaty ones: chicken, roast beef, bacon (and prawn cocktail). Walkers introduced a lamb & mint flavour about a decade ago. They disappeared after a year or so, though - probably didn't sell very well. They reappeared when Walkers started doing the 'Sensations' brand, but again they didn't last very long. So, you can imagine how delighted I was that they brought them back as one of the 3 Coronation special limited edition flavours. Sadly, our supermarkets sold out of the lamb & mint very quickly, so that's it. They're gone again.
Flavours go in cycles, though, and nearly everything here is 'sour cream & chive' or 'sweet chilli'. Don't like either of those flavours at all. I buy the supermarket own brand 'sharing' packs (ie 100g or more) in the beef/steak/prawn flavours (depending on which shop).
You seemed to go for several in the same flavour family (2 x pickled onion, cheese & onion, and salt & vinegar). But you didn't try any of the wonderful BBQ beef/sizzling steak type of crisps at all.

Crisps began in a garage in Cricklewood (UK) in 1920, when a man named Frank Smith started making potato crisps with his wife. The story goes that Mrs Smith cut and fried the potatoes, while Mr Smith packed the crisps and sold them in the pub next door, the Cricklewood Crown. Probably where the Smith Crisps brand first started

They used to sell them in pubs and gave people blue ceramic salt cellars. They kept getting stolen so the Smiths started adding a blue sachet made from paper with a portion of salt inside.

Worcestershire sauce was invented in the (then)town of Worcester, England(AKA Worcestershire). The locals pronounce it Wooster (like rooster wit a w) and call the sauce simply "Worcester(Wooster) sauce".

    This was fun watching!
I live 3 miles from the main UK factory for Walkers, in the city where the brand started.
Although Lays and Walkers are both owned by PepsiCo, they aren't the same company, and their crisps/chips are similar but not the same.
I much prefer the crisps that are literally slices of potato to all the 'blown polystyrene' type.
The Max ones are Ok, but I find them too thick really.
My favourite is the classic cheese and onion.
I will eat a cheese quaver though.

You got to the pickled onion monster munch and said you got to the weird flavours, that’s the regular monster munch flavour! 😂 tomato ketchup, Worcestershire (wustersher) sauce, marmite - I haven’t seen any of those flavours for literally YEARS! My favourite crisps are BBQ Bugles, my daughters are French fries.
Fun fact; salt and vinegar used to be blue and cheese and onion used to be green. Walkers swapped them over a few years ago!
Also, the Max crisps are around, but are classed as a more premium crisp and aren’t as popular
Gutted to see you had no seabrook crisps on there, or burtons fish n chips, or even smiths scampi or bacon fries!

The reason they are called ready salted is that in the olden days (also still available) Crisps came with a little small blue packet of salt that you added yourself! but these are Ready etc etc!

Walkers are a very popular mainstream brand that you'd find basically everywhere in the UK. Not bad but nothing special.
For a more gourmet snacking experience I highly recommend trying:
Kettle Chips (especially their Sea Salt & Crushed Black Peppercorns flavour),
or Tyrrells (esp. Mature Cheddar and Chive),
or Real Handcooked (esp. Ham and English Mustard).
