this how my conversations go: ME i want a phone DAD you dont need one ME all my friends have one DAD so if all your friends jump off a cliff are you going to?
I got my first laptop going in grade 12 when I was the one needed it most for homework! thank you so much for posting this! as a young mother myself it really helps knowing that I can look up to someone who's experienced so many things that I have to look forward to. You're so inspiring and I really appreciate all that you've shared throughout the years with us! Your family is beautiful, you're a wonderful mother and a very lovely lady :) I look forward to watching more videos!
Hi Colette! I was 22 when I got my laptop and had internet..and I'm now 27 and I never had a cellphone. I agree with your thoughts on internet and children. They should be supervised and have the computer in a main room. I think it's always good to teach your children about any types of dangers, so they are aware.
I got my 1st phone at 7/8 but that was because I was going on a lot of school trips, then when I moved house it was too late to change schools and so I got a better phone and that was to let my parents I got to school safe and when I was on my way home. As you can imagine they were worried about me getting the bus on my own everyday early hours in the morning. I 100% agree with you about computers x
I was given a basic cell phone when I was 12 to call my parents, and bought my own laptop for schoolwork when I was 15. I didn't have a smart phone until 17. I'm 19 now :) I love your attitude towards parenting! You're a great role model and I hope to one day have a family as loving and caring as yours! x
I have never had a phone but I am getting one for my birthday. I have had different iPads since I was 8 and I am now 11 and my dad is always saying to me there are strange and weird and horrible people out there and I always say I am just chatting to my friends like I have Instagram, snapxhat,Kik,ooVoo,Skype and many more. After watching that I have learnt alot that not to share any of my details out just to do what I do usually when I am offline. THANKYOU SO MUCH CHLOETTE I HAVE LEARNT ALOT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😘😘😘😘😘😘😘
I got my first phone in august this year before I started back school and im 12 right now I had been jealous for so long because everyone of my friends had a phone and I felt left out but im so glad I waited cause I feel more responsible now that I am close to being a teenager so I think it is better to wait than be sorry cause I easily broke things in seconds so I hope this helps telling your kids my experience and how it is better to wait btw I love your shaytards vlogs they are amazing keep it up
We had a family computer growing up that didn't have internet really. It was mostly for doing school homework. Then I didn't get my own phone (which at the time all phones were very basic) till I was 15. It was meant to only call my parents and sometimes friends when arranging plans, etc.
I am 12 and got my first phone earlier this month for finishing 6th grade and I think it's a very suitable time so kids can call/text their parents if they are staying after school and need to get picked up or if they want to ride their bike to a friends house they can contact you when they get there
Ah, love this! We don't want to give our kids gadgets until they prove themselves ready either, and it's nice to see we're not the ONLY ones who feel that way. I really don't remember when I got my first phone, but I think it was in junior high... So I was probably around 13.. maybe.. But to tell the truth, I could probably manage without one even today.
I got my first celphone a few months before i turned 12, so I was 11, but it was a phone that had no camera and no internet and the only game was suduko, so I think those kind of phones would be good for people like PrincessTard and SonTard because you can text and call which is really all a phone is for. I don't think they are at the age yet where they can go on the internet and download stuff on their phone. Thank you for reading this. Hope it helped! Neha x
as a mom i totally agree with you about the internet. I have two kids, a daughter 21 and a son 18. They both had computers in their rooms with strict parental controls. My daughter got a cell phone when she was 16 and driving. My son, only last year got a cell phone and he barely uses it.
i got my phone when i graduated from eighth grade and i got a lap top in my first year of middle school, but because of what middle schoolers do and are curious about and don't know about creepers you're very smart to have them stay where people can see them and what they're doing.
I just wanna hug u! Thank u for being the mom that you are are! You're not trying to be a "cool" mom or just giving in to your kids because everyone else has it or is doing it! My mom and I get a lot of flack from people because they say we are so old fashioned because we dont agree with so many young kids having fb's or phones or laptops. Its so dangerous online nowadays so many things happen. But thanks for this video! :]
I am 25, so cellphones were still fairly simple when I was growing up. We had one computer in our house for kids (I have 5 siblings!). We were allowed 1 hour of computer time a day. Which caused us to play together and outside a lot! When I was 16 I gotta first cellphone, which my parents definitely looked at on occasion. I was graduated from high school when I got my own computer. I did some times get frustrated with their rules, but as a married adult I am happy for them!
These days kids are getting phones and stuff at really young ages I'm 17 and I got my first one at 14 and only because I was in after school activities. I also agree maturity level is a big part and how much your parents trust you. Love you guys! SHAYTARDS are awesome
Growing up, we only had one computer in the family room. My parents never allowed computers or tvs in our room. I got my first laptop when I was leaving for college and my parents trusted that I was responsible enough to use it for good things. Also, I didn't get a cell phone until the 8th or 9th grade and it was one of those pay-as-you-go phones, so I had a limit of how much I could talk and text.
I got my first phone when I was 13 but that was back in 1999, phones were so much safer then there wasn't even a colour screen never mind having a camera and internet access. We got our first family computer around the same time but it didn't have internet access until 2002. I think it's right that you base what technology the kids can have on their maturity.
I got my first cell phone and laptop and cellphone when I was 19 and going away to college. I remember even then, my mom didn't want me to have a phone or laptop, but I paid for them myself and I'm glad I did. I wouldn't have survived freshman year without them.
I got my first phone when I was ten. It was a slide phone. My mum always checked my messages too. It's useful if there is an emergency when you are not with them. I was a little young. When kids get phones, they don't spend as much time with family.
Hi Katielette, I am a huge fan of your families videos! Your relationship with your children and husband is truly inspiring. I have one question how do you feel about plastic surgery?
My two older brothers didn't get actual phones until they were 16 and were starting to drive. Before that I think my one brother had an Ipod. My younger brother and I got Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0s when I was 13 and he was 12. We can't call or text, except text through Google Hangouts and apps. These phones need an internet network to be able to access the Internet (not a cell tower) which is "ugh" sometimes but I can just use my Mom's phone. ;) My youngest brother and sister got off the wall tablets (not an Ipad though we do have one) but they don't play on them that much.
The first phone I got was in 9th grade (I'm a junior in college now -19yrs old) but it was just a prepaid, but I didn't need anything more than that. I got my first personal laptop as a High School graduation gift, but had a desk top computer before that. Most of my friends had phones before me but I really didn't care.
I got my first and current phone when I was starting secondary school at 12 (I'm 14 now) because my parent though I needed it seeing at though I'm walking to and from school almost everyday. I think what you said is entirely right and that your kids don't really need laptops, phones ect. until they have a legitimate reason eg. laptop for school or phone for when put with friends when they're a bit older.
I'm currently almost 16 and I've had a computer in my room since I was around 7. I agree that it should depend on how responsible and mature your child is, which is why I think my mother allowed me to have one so young. I only ever used it to play computer games, and I was never allowed on the INTERNET unsupervised until I was around 13. I was taught all the rules and dangers of the internet and I never ran into any trouble doing things I shouldn't be.
I had to buy my own cell phone at 18 once I started working. I had a computer in my room but no Internet and it was an old one at like 17? I definitely agree with your guys points
I got a cell phone in high school and had to share it with my brother. I also got a lap top in high school but could not use the internet on it. I had to use the family computer for the internet.
I'm 22 so most of the technology was still developing when I was growing up. I barely remember the internet before 6th grade, and texting didn't exist until 8th. I got my first cell phone at 12 when I had to walk to school, my first flip phone with a camera at 16, and texting at 18. But now my sister is 16, and she has an iPhone so the times have changed seriously fast! I had a computer in my room in high school, but my parents could see the screen from my door, which had to be open!
I got my first phone when I was 12 and I got my own laptop in 5th grade. In my family we each have our own laptops in our bedrooms that we can use whenever we need to (mostly for school). I also have my own iPod.
I got a basic cell phone when I was 11, And just recently a few months ago I got my first "Smart Phone". Growing up we always had a desktop computer in the living room, but I got my own personal laptop when I was 12 for school, all my school was online and I was aloud to bring the laptop where ever I pleased.
I believe I got my first phone in sixth grade. It was an LG Rumour and I remember the only thing I could do on it was text and play pac-man XD I'm in tenth grade now and I saved up for an iPhone 5 last year, and it works perfectly fine! (plus it feels amazing to save and buy something yourself)
Oh yes, and my first cell phone was at 12 or 13 I believe. I don't remember when I got my first computer but I remember being on them before I had a cell phone
I soooo agree with this and this is how it has been done in our home. We are a blended family which makes it difficult.... for my 2 children we (both bio parents) are on the same page and handle it the same way. For my husband and his 2 exs, the kids spends more time in our home so their mom's parent out of guilt and give them things that want without suprvision. This has led to some MAJOR problems for his son specificially. Obvi it is easier when you're dealing with 1 home!
With my internet/ laptop computer situation. We had one main computer on my dads office and then my parents got my big sister a laptop to use in her room due to her course work and then I grew up and my parents realised that I was basically living in front of the computer. But the good thing about starting off on a shared computer is that u learn to respect the internet. Good or bad. U are cautious of what you put online and what u look for and watch.
I got my first phone at 8 and I just used it for calling my parents it was just a basic phone. I'm almost 13 and I have a iPhone. I'm so thankful that my parents did this for me! But it's all up to you and believe what u want. My parents are kind of strict and only let me have some social medias but not all
i got my own basic mobile phone when i was 11, as something to contact my parents with when I started secondary/high school. I got my own laptop when I turned 13 because my parents trusted me and i needed something to do my homework on.
My nephew -he just turned 6 on the 3rd, got an iPod and Black Berry Play Book this past Christmas.. My parents didnt get a computer until I was maybe 12 and I shared a cellphone with my dad when I was like 15. I got my own cellphone maybe two years after. My first laptop was from my parents for Christmas when I was 20 and I only had that a short while (it go broken).. I bought my own a year after that.. I got an iPod touch not this Christmas that just went by but last Christmas.
I got my phone when i entered middle school the same time i got a laptop. It was really because it was needed at that point. I began going out with friends and having a social life and my parents needed to be able to contact me. I also did most of my homework on the computer and needed my own honestly.
I got my first phone when i was 10 and have had a computer since i was 5 but that was just for games at the time really, i only used it for internet etc when i was 11ish. I've never bought into apple or anything like that, i just think using electronics to stay in touch, do work and play games is good!
I was 11 1/2 when I first got my cell phone and it was just for emergencies. There has been a family computer ever since I was a baby but I first started to learn how to use it when I was 8 or 9. I started borrowing my dads laptop an taking it in my room at 11.
I got my first phone for my 13th birthday. Like you said you should give them a basic phone. And I had one and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. The reason my parents decided to give it to me then is because I was involved with extra curricular activities that required me staying after, before, or going some where without them.
You're doing it right katilette! I didn't have a laptop in my room until college! (This year) didnt have a smartphone and texting until senior year either!
I had my dad's old Nokia phone when I was 12, which had also been previously used by my brother. I got my first proper phone at 13 when I started high school. As for computers/laptops, we've always had a family computer for everyone to use, however it's become rather old (I remember playing games on it when I was around 5, so we must have had it for a while before then), so since it's become slow and old I've just borrowed my dads laptop. I got my own laptop for my 18th last year, but us kids have never had computers or TVs in our rooms (except for my brothers who shared a tiny TV to play video games on, they couldn't actually watch it)
I think your way is the best way. They have to handle all the eletronic stuff soon enough. And I would handle that pretty similiar if I would have kids. I would want my kids to grow up like I did. Woods/ Nature/ Books and some television. But not that much internet or social media stuff.
I didn't get my first phone till I was 13. I remember wanting one for AGES, but once I finally got it, I realized I didn't even really use it that much. I never really went anywhere without my parents, and I only had one or two good friends I would talk to out of school. But I would just talk to them through instant messaging on the computer!
I was like 10 with a junky old phone not even a flip phone! It had a small little screen that was like all digital and black and grey. No camera no texting just ring tones and contacts. It was a good first phone. I also got an MP3 player wen I was like 10 but my brothers the one that put the music on it and they were like all pop songs.
I got my phone when I first got to middle school. I think you should do this for your kids too because almost everyone gets theres in middle school and its a easy way to contact friends. hope this was helpful
I didn't have my first cell phone until I was a sophomore in high school and didn't have my own computer until I left for college which I had to buy myself. Although when I was in high school it was hard not to have my own computer but since I now have one I bought myself I'm very protective over it and take care of it better than most of my things.
I got my first cell phone on my 16th birthday! That way my parents could communicate with me once I got my license and was out of the house more. We've always had a lot of computers in the house though because of the nature of my parents' work.
My first phone was a really basic one ages ago when I was 8 so that I could ring my parents if I was with my friends to let them know I was ok and what time I needed to get picked up etc. and I have an ipad mini for Internet and UA-cam, music, apps etc.
I'm almost 18 and i got my first basic phone at 13 as i had to walk to school by myself, then a second hand laptop for school work at 15 or 16. before then we just had a family computer
I live in Australia so when I started high school at the age of 12 I got a very basic mobile phone so I can use it for emergencies such and missing the bus and stuff like that x
About the cell phone thing, the first real experience I got was sharing mith my mom. After a year of that for Christmas I got my own iPhone 4 (I was 13) . And than in
My mom bought us a computer when I was about 13 years old. I wasn't using it for social networks or anything, just to paint and just play around with the games lol. I started to heavily get into the social networks at like 14 years old. I didn't have a cell phone until I was 18. It was a minute phone. I'm 21 years old now.
I got my first phone when i was 9 years old for my birthday, i only used it to talk to a few friends and play the little games it came with, but then i started saving my pocket money and bought my own iphone at age 11, I got a laptop when i was 12 for christmas which i use for school work and watch my favourite youtubers :) I got facebook when i was ten and then everthing else like instagram when all my friends got it xx
I got my first phone at 10 and recently saved up enough money from babysitting and little jobs since i was 8 and just bought my own ipad . I am now 12 and trusted by my mom to have it and truely love the maturity and would really recommend saving money.
I didn't have a cell phone until I was 16 and driving and it was prepaid but I was responsible for making sure it always had minutes on it in case I needed it if I broke down somewhere or my mom needed to get ahold of me. I didn't have my own computer until I went away to college either.
I got a basic cell phone in 5th grade because that was when I started having activities and such and it was really only used when I went somewhere. I did't get a more advanced one until 7th grade. I got a Facebook when I was 11 because my dad taught classes on it and therefore knew all the ways to secure it. My parents had the password to my facebook until they felt I was mature enough and had earned enough trust to have privacy on there (a year later, when I was 12).
I have a cell phone which my mom and dad check like every week ( which I don't like but you know for safety) but you know xxx. My younger siblings don't have a cell phone but we have a family tablet/ computer for all of our use xxx
iPad-12, Phone-13, Computer-14. I really agree about the "who you are online" thing. When I was 9 or 10 I saw a video in girl scouts about computer stalkers/ chat rooms and stuff. I terrified me and now I am really cautious. I got my computer mainly because of school work.
21 years old, I didn't have my own cellphone until I was around 13-14 years old and entering highschool. We did get a family computer when I was about 10 years old and that became my personal computer when I was 12 because my parents hated us fighting over who could use it. The computer stayed in a room where my parents could monitor what I was doing easily... I got my own personal laptop on my 15th birthday.
I'm 16 now and i've had fully free access to a computer and internet since I was around 7-8. My parents trusted me with the computer and didn't supervise me, of course they told me to stay away from chatrooms and stuff, but that's it. I'm really glad that I got access at such a young age because i've learnt a lot and i'm now running my own business within IT. I don't think that all kids should have free unsupervised access at such a young age, it depends on how responisble they are.
I got my first phone in 3rd grade but don't worry it wasn't really a phone it was my moms old phone and she programed it to only let me call her my dad and 911. In fifth grade I got a simple phone that the keyboard just slid out but at that time I had started being more independent and being home alone I do agree with you though but for me we did not have a home phone so I needed contact when I was home alone. In 6th grade my phone started to have problems like not recieving calls or texts so my dad gave me his old phone which was an iphone 4 and that is still what I have today. I highly agree that we have to be responsible and I was that was the only reason my parents got me one or let me stay home alone. I might only be in 6th grade but I admire you. thank you so much you inspire me... Tell shay good job on his marathon
I got my first cell phone when I was out of highschool and had my first job to be able to afford it. I'm not sure if it was a rule per say with my parents, but cell phones weren't as widely popular like they are now, and I'm only 26. I've had my own computer in my room since I was in grade 6-ish. I'm dyslexic and owe chat rooms/onling gaming a lot because that's pretty much where I learned how to write properly.
I got a cell phone when i got to high school, only because my activities had gotten to the point where I was spending more than 10 hours a day away from home without my parents. I STILL don't have a smart phone (im 19) cause I feel like students having cell phones creates more of a distraction than anything. On computers, my parents always gave us "computer time" which as we got older increased. We had a kitchen timer that went off when we had used up our time for the day(: worked pretty well!
My kids are 20 months old and 8 months old, and I've thought about this before and talked to my partner about it, we both got phones really young and have decided that our kids will have a cellphone when they're old enough to be responsible with one. A cellphone & laptop is something we had to work for and I'm hoping my kids will have the same value as me.
I got my first cellphone when I was 10 and that one I have now when I was 13. I have always had access to pc (a really old on was standing in my room) and internet since I was 10, maybe. I got my laptop from my school, so around 16.
I had my first cell phone in 7th grade at age 13 (I'm 20 now and a sophomore in college) if I remember right. However, I was only given a pre-paid phone that I was responsible for paying for. I didn't get my first "real" cell phone until age 15 (freshmen in high school) and I was still responsible for paying the bill. I also didn't have a computer in my room until I was a freshman in high school and didn't have a laptop until I was given one as a high school graduation present before I left for college. I think you're doing the right thing and when I look back, I'm glad my parents didn't give me all that freedom at a young age. I'm definitely more responsible because of it!
I got my first phone I think when I was a freshman in high school. The only reason my parents let me get one then was because I was in marching band and had to stay after school several times a week. It didn't do much but I did have like 200 texts and 350 minutes. Then I got a laptop when I was a senior as a graduation gift and because I had a ten page research paper due at the end if the year.
I have to have my laptop on my room because thats the only way I can watch Shaytards and katilette, etc. My mum has never been mean and say I'm not allowed to have my devises in my room. I'm allowed to shut the door and everything also. But my family isn't really accepting of the fact I am ADDICTED to this amazing family I watch religiously EVERYDAY! (Don't forget to thumbs up!) I can't wait for the day I get to meet you, weather you are still vlogging when I do or not doesn't matter, but I will still someday (hopefully) meet you and the family! Love you katilette
I have a laptop, inexpensive Tracfone (not a smartphone but still does a lot of smart stuff, a desktop in need of repair, and an Elocity A7 seven-inch tablet--which I got at PC Direct for a bargain price.
I got my first cell phone (with a camera and texting) just before I turned 15. I also got my first iPod for my 15th birthday, and signed up for UA-cam soon after I turned 15. I got a Facebook just before I turned 16 and got my Twitter just after I turned 16. I got my first laptop for Christmas when I was also 16.
I got my first cellphone when i was 14, and it was a basic one, i mean it was 2004 smartphones didn't exist yet, but it had some source of internet. And i remember being awake until 5 in the morning chatting with strangers. I even was so close to meet with one near my house. So yeah i think you are doing good in keeping your kids away from that for now.
I got my first cell phone a Nokia when I was in 10th grade and my first lap top when I graduated from college we also had a main family computer in the main room.
Growing up with my mom we only had 1 shared computer between me, my mom and my 3 siblings. I was 16 when I was allowed to have a computer in my room and got my first cell phone. My dad bought me a cheap, paid to get the phone activated and after that, it was up to me to pay everything else! It didnt last very long. And I didn't have another cell phone till last year. (i'm 21 now)
I think I got my first cell phone when I was 16 or 17.. basically when i got a car, but I had a computer (rather we had a family computer) since I was 11 or 12.
i didn't get my first cell phone until high school, when i was doing a lot of after school activities and had to be kept track of. as for computers, we had one in our house since i was 5 and it was in the room next to the family room. still my sister found ways to get in trouble though, she gave out our address at least three times! so location isn't really as important as being knowledgable about the do's and don'ts! because if they want to get in trouble, they will, regardless of if you watch.
I have a smart phone and I got it last year in march. I have learned some tough lessons bc of it. My parents tho didn't really teach me about online safety that much. So when I started playing with the smart phone at first I was cautious then one thing led to another and know I am in a place were I am super careful of my priviticy online and who is my friend and what pics I post and to make sure my parents and family r not involved when I post stuff. So basicly some tips here
I think it's great that you're waiting until they're old and responsible enough. I didn't have a cel phone until I was going out and doing things by myself at 13 or 14 and would need to stay in contact with my folks. There's no reason for kids to have smartphones, you can get a gameboy or similar for entertainment, they really don't need calling / texting until they're out and about regularly. You should also check out X3 Watch for when they get their own computers, no reason not to have it.
My two siblings and I all got phones when we were 15. And my sister and I both got our own laptops when we were 17. My brother is 17 now and he uses the family computer and I think he's fine with that. And everyone in my family has iphones by now but no one has an ipad. I think the longer you can hold off with extensive technology, the better!
I got my first cell phone when I was 14, I'm 20 now, & it was a very basic phone, no internet, & it was pay-as-you-go so I couldn't rack up any expensive phone bills. I think that's a good way to go. When I have kids, I might even wanna wait til they're older than 14, maybe 15 or 16, but definitely no younger than 14. I never had my own personal laptop as a teenager either, so unless the school systems totally change & actually require kids to have laptops, I don't think I'll do that either.
this how my conversations go:
ME i want a phone
DAD you dont need one
ME all my friends have one
DAD so if all your friends jump off a cliff are you going to?
LOL!
Exactly how it goes
:) :)
Very VERY good plan Collette. Not too overprotective but enough for the kiddo's safety while allowing them to learn about things.

You are so right! Be careful because your kids can be exposed to so much online! Because I was exposed to a lot.
Raise your kids the way you are Kate. You're a super-great mom, and a roll-model to be followed.
I got my first phone when I was 10. When I starting go out with my friends and walking to school in my own. Love your videos
I completely agree with you Katilette.
I got facebook when i was 15... Love you katilette, you are so pretty and such an inspiration to all of us!
I totally agree with everything you said. I with most other parents went by these rules.
Hi Katielette,
I am a huge fan of your families videos!
These phones need an internet network to be able to access the Internet (not a cell tower) which is "ugh" sometimes but I can just use my Mom's phone. ;)
My youngest brother and sister got off the wall tablets (not an Ipad though we do have one) but they don't play on them that much.
Whhhhaaat!? So many people got cell phones, ipods and laptops at 9? I got my first phone [basic] at 13, and a laptop in year 8 for school.
I got my first cell phone when I was 10, I got a laptop to share with my sister at 11, my own at 12, and I've had iPods/MP4 players like forever.
I got my phone when I was aroun 7-8 I think
It was an LG Rumour and I remember the only thing I could do on it was text and play pac-man XD
I'm in tenth grade now and I saved up for an iPhone 5 last year, and it works perfectly fine!
My parents are kind of strict and only let me have some social medias but not all
I got my first cell phone at the beginning of middle school, & it was one of those old sidekicks haha :)
i got my own basic mobile phone when i was 11, as something to contact my parents with when I started secondary/high school.
Colette, please do some more music covers! You are amazing!
I got my first cell phone in 2nd grade. And my first laptop when I was in 6th grade, but before that I never got on the computer.
I'm 14 I have a iPad mini, and a iPod. My mom, brother and me use the same computer they really help with projects and hw stuff
I was 14 when I got my first cell phone, and 18 when I got my first laptop... I did however have access to the family computer most of my life. :)
iPad-12, Phone-13, Computer-14.
You are amazing katilette!
I remember I got my first phone right before 7th grade. It was a flip phone but I loved it!
I got my first phone when I was in 6th grade. As for computer, we had a family computer, but I didn't get my own laptop till I went to college.
I got my first cellphone when i was 8 but it was a brick. I was just playing with the music from the keyboard.
