Aunque las dos bandas se sitúan dentro del género NeoProgresivo, Marillion (1979) se formó después de Pendragon (1978) y a diferencia de la última, incursionó en el Progresivo. Pendragon tiende a mostrar un caracter mucho más sinfónico que Marillion y esto se puede apreciar en la preponderancia de los teclados de Clive Nolan (Shadowland y Arena entre otras grandes bandas). No es copia... son contemporáneas en la época de oro del Rock Británico.

Al contrario, es un cantante muy original, no se parece a nadie. Y como guitarrista es junto a Steve Rothery y John Mitchell los mejores guitarristas del rock neo progresivo.
