When faced with the "Alarm System Service Required" message on the dashboard of a 2000+ Volvo S60/S80/V70, the problem is almost always the siren module. The siren module is located on the passenger side of the vehicle, behind the front bumper cover in front of the wheel. It is encased in a riveted metal box that prevents would-be thieves from damaging the module to silence it. Inside of the siren are rechargeable batteries that, by now, have likely failed and cannot accept a charge any longer. In some cases, the batteries leak and destroy the module's printed circuit board.
Watch the video above to learn how easy it is to replace the module if it should fail.

Thanks for the video! I just did this repair yesterday and it took less than an hour thanks to the instruction. One thing I did slightly different was use a dremel with a cutting disk to make a slot in the shear screw and then used an offset screwdriver to unscrew it - it worked slick. After the repair I took the old unit apart and the circuit board was partially burned coming from where the battery contacts were. Also, count the number of rivets you need to put that wheel well cover back, I was 1 short. I ordered the alarm siren, shear screw and rivets from FCP, fast shipping even during the holidays!

Was that module interfering with any other modules?

  • @CrackBerryAddict

The reason why these fail is because there's an NiMH battery inside the siren that stops holding a charge, thus prompting the "Alarm System Service Required" message in the instrument cluster. If the message is neglected, the battery in the siren leaks all over the circuit board, which can cause other problems like stopping the sunroof from working. You can also test the siren by locking the doors, waiting 20-30 seconds for the alarm to arm and then pulling up on the door lock pin. You should hear a high-pitched wailing. The panic button on the key fob does not trigger the siren, just the car's horn and the hazards.
My XC70 got the "Alarm System Service Required" message in the dash. When I tested the siren, the hazard lights flashed, but there was no sound. Instead of buying a new siren module, I went to a salvage yard and took a module off of an S80. Then I bought a new battery off eBay, cut open the module, replaced the leaking battery (thankfully the board was unscathed, if the board is fried by battery acid, this won't work), then sealed it with hot glue and electrical tape. I didn't have to take the wheel off because of the XC70's raised ride height. That stupid message is gone and the siren works.

You remove just the plastic siren, not the whole metal bracket. Just slack top and lower 10mm bolts with a wrech. This doesnt work on the Xc90 though

Great demo as usual. The retaining bolt was a pain to remove. In the end I used a pair of channel lock pliers to get enough grip to get it to turn. Job took about 60 mins. Hope to get another year out of my 16 year old s60 thanks to FCP with this and other useful vids. Thanks again

Why the security bolt? If your siren goes bad, from say the battery leaking, does a replacement need programmed to the car? Also, do you sell the siren battery? Thank you for all the Volvo videos. 2004 XC70.

I am a bit confused because the panic button on remote does the job so the car as well, but not when i lock the car and try to open it by hand(where i understand the alarm should kick in).
I have no error messages on dashbord. What shall i check or is the same problem as yours?

Jay, thanks for the video. My siren module stopped working almost a year ago so I took it out tmporarily so my sunroof will work. Now, I in the process of replacing the siren module. I didn't keep the shear bolt so I couldn't chk its size. I don't need to replace it with a shear head. I was just gonna get a bolt from the HW store. Are you able to tell me the size/type? M6x20 maybe? Thanks.

    Jay,
I have the exact 2004 S60 AWD Volvo. I love it. This past week, my battery died twice and today, I got the Alarm maintenance required message. Checked the number 38 fuse, looks fine.
Questions, what’s the correlation between battery and a bad alarm siren? How does it drain the battery?
Is there any test to confirm it’s a bad alarm siren? All I have is the message saying “Alarm maintenance required.
And can I replace it through the removal of the headlamp, specifically for this model, 2004 S60? The rivet removal is too much for me to do.
    Thanks in advance.

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  7 років тому +6

It's usually because of the internal backup battery that resides inside of the alarm siren assembly which starts to leak acid over time and pours directly on top of the circuit board.
