This is one of the best interviews yet. Thanks Andy and Craig.
I thought so too, really great and some very interesting stuff.
Absolutely incredible interview. Andy’s book, “The Golden Rules of Acting” is full of amazing advice, not just for actors but anyone creative, anyone who does a gig-based job… anyone who works with others… anyone, really.
I emailed with Andy a few times since we were both in Psycrets. And we found a weird commonality, I'd been a professional musician as aged 15-22/24 and the band I was in had opened for Dutch Rock Legend Herman Brood. Now Andy was in a movie called Wild Romance I believe it was, about Herman Brood.
When we got in touch Herman already decided to see if he could fly from the roof of the Hilton. Which I remember vividly hearing on the radio and being shocked whilst I was working my day job for IBM. My colleague, boss and I were subco's for IBM and my colleague was like: "what's wrong with you?" I was like: "Herman Brood is gone... I used to work with him." And he was sort of thinking I was talking nonsense. So I explained we opened for Herman Brood the summer of 94 and he was a weird demanding but also frail and tender person.
The first day we opened for them we come into the "green room" which was just a section next to the stage and he sat on the backrest of a chair completely catatonic. And we were instructed not to bother the main act (we knew that) because there were no separate green rooms. So the Wild Romance (his band) were drinking and jamming and he was just zoned out... We get the stage call we go on and it was THE WORST SHOW, I'd ever played. But the rest of the band wasn't great either. So we were literally arguing and fighting as we went off stage.
And bands have a lot of drama! If you thought magic world is bad, bands are worse. So suddenly Herman look at us and he says in a soft raspy voice: "But did you guys loved playing out there?" And we were taken aback, I was going in my mind: "IT TALKS!" And we stampered: "Yeah sure, but we need to tighten our shit up again."
And he's like: "Enjoying yourself is what Rock and Roll is about kids." He put on his jacket they go on. We run around the in front of the buffer zone. And he sits behind his grand piano, starts pounding the chords of Saturday Night, and this man just changed! He became a stage animal!
And like Andy said: "I was never not nervous going on!" Whether it was stage hypnosis/mentalism or music or even corporate lectures on IT/Security! The first 5 minutes were sheer anxiety -- and I needed a very standard simple thing whether it was playing Start Me Up, or one of our own songs "ik kan niet meer" or the Phil Goldstein ESP prediction. I needed something simple to get my brain into that stage space. And afterwards I could never sleep! That was horrible when I was in college and gigging because I would be in class fighting to stay awake for a test.
Later on we had more interactions together, but we mainly joked around with the band, he could be really demanding and shouty before shows. I wanted to be on his own with some booze, some magic nose powder I guess and god knows what else.
The spring I was walking over the dyke, first great spring day. And I sit down next to an older man who was in pain and I asked if he was alright. He told me his hip was replaced and we started talking. And it turned out he was a tour manager and he too knew Herman. I heard stories that I could see happening in his wild days :D
Funny small world the Dutch live music scene. Probably even smaller now as GenZ don't seem to play in a lot of bands, like us GenXers did.
Cracking interview. Well done, Andy and Craig.
I know you thought while watching this: Are the glasses a little big?

Made me laugh when Andy named the supreme trick with the little Buddha, i have one of them. If memory serves it’s called “The Mystery Of The Chinese Idol”. Great interview, Andy could read the phone book and I’d be interested but he is so interesting , such a good speaker.
