A Look at the 1966 Captain America Cartoon

- I do not own Marvel or Captain America and this video is intended to be educational edutainment for how cape comics shows in the 60s were done by the studios who made them.
Captain America is one of Marvel's older properties and honestly while this show may be cheap and intentionally hilarious it has a lot more action than some of Filmation's shows from the same era. I enjoyed watching it both ironically and unironically and at least it wasn't boring. Also reading some of the issues of Captain America and Avengers that got directly adapted to this shows how much work went into making this show. Like, that scene of Captain America going insane and falling off the bridge? It didn't go down like that. That took some creativity to match the laziness. Like a college student bullshitting an essay the night before and getting a passing grade.
Some stuff got cut out like Cap's older shield. The scene where the Red Skull says don't open the door didn't go down that way either. Cap breaks down the door instead of the goon opening it but he broke through with his old shield so they had to do the scene another way. It's actually kind of impressive.
It's kind of surprising how boyish Bucky used in the early issues but then you have to remember that Stan Lee played no part in creating the character and that's why there's a sidekick in Marvel. Stan hated sidekicks and had him killed off ... or so he thought.
Now. If this video and channel doesn't get nuked I'll move to Thor and the other 1966 shows in an educational manner.

Fun fact...some of the VA's here later was brought in for the 60's Spider-Man. For instance, pretty sure the guy who did the voice of the Red Skull also did the voice of the best J. Jonah Jameson in animation and Rick Jones' VA later did the voice of Spider-Man.
John Vernon was the general, he also did the 1966 Iron Man.

My favorite piece of Cap lore is that the "A" on his mask is just a peel-off decal. Maybe for if he ever wants to switch countries.
That was just for that story, so micro circuits could go there to jam the broadcast.
Disney fired a hell of a warning shot
It is surprising that Baron Heinrich Zemo never bothered to contact the one man who created a substance that could dissolve Adhesive X. That one man who is an expert in all kinds of adhesives: Peter Petruski. It may have been that man's alias at the time that prevented Zemo from even thinking of contacting him: Paste Pot Pete.
It's surprisingly that he never got a shield
The Avengers *did* enlist Pete's help when Zemo covered New York with Adhesive X, though. He provided a "super-dissolver" which was able to neutralize the adhesive, which Zemo then attempted to steal. However, before Zemo could use the dissolver Rick Jones' Teen Brigade, under the orders of Captain America, switched it with a canister of tear gas. Kind of a dick move, if you ask me. Let the guy take his hood off, already.
221b Cap still held Zemo partly responsible for Bucky's demise, didn't he? That's why he didn't object to the switcheroo.

Dude, there's a giant flying robot that's looks like a manta ray carrying another goofy-looking robot (and it's also connected to a giant metal head) running amok the world. And you live in a world where some of it's greatest heroes are a millionaire in a robotic suit and a literal Norse god. AND you are also arguing with a super-soldier. As much absurd anything Captain America said sounds, I still wouldn't consider it a "wild guess".
But why destroy the Earth? The villains live on the Earth they kind of need it

The greatest thing about these cartoons is that they used ACTUAL MARVEL ART -- not imitations by animators.
And it saved them a LOT of money, cause the artists didn't get a penny for their printed work being reused. they didn't get paid a penny for reprints at least up to 1975..

Actual Jack Kirby drawings. Early days when these were done on a tight budget,
It's like they went to Terry Gilliam with a huge stack of Kirby comics and told him to get to work!
The first reveal of the Red Skull was actually pretty frightening
The printed comics showed the skull with the swastika on his chest, they took it off for these toons.
3:22 that look in his eyes could also mean hes had a crappy day at work and crappy tips. Why do you think he hates ALL mankind? Maybe he just hates YOU.
Zemo's dancing animation used over and over is the greatest thing ever
And today we have webcomics where the artists can animate their characters in similar way.
12:03 when you’re an old man and your hippie granddaughter calls you.
Damn, this show was hardcore.
back in 1966 or so, A young Ed Brubaker watched these toons, and said" IF I ever manage to become a comics writer, I'm bringing bucky back!" These toons thus, are why today, there is a winter soldier.
He was born in '66 ironically enough
@@Voltan I recall them re running these well into the 1970s.So I'm sure he just seen them a bit later. Forget just where he admitted to them inspiring him.
I'm kinda baffled they would take this down, especially considering how freaking old and dated this show is.
If one picks up, or goes to read comic online, the fall of 1966 marvels all had big house adds and bottom of page promos for these shows, and the bullpen page ballyhooed the hell out of them airing. It was a BIG event for marvel back then. It was something that they strived for for five years.
Best edutainment ever.
